The Altar of the Fatherland
“The 'Altar of the Fatherland' (Altare della Patria) is the largest national monument in Italy and it was inaugurated by King Vittorio Emanuele III during the 50th anniversary of the unification of Italy at the Universal Exhibition on June 4th 1911. The monument was originally designed to commemorate King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy. He was the first king of Italy and was known as the 'Gentleman King' and the 'Father of the Nation'. The monument is dedicated to him and with him the whole Risorgimento (the movement which led to the unification of Italy). For this reason it is often known as the 'Vittoriano'.
In 1880 an international competition for the design of the monument was put forward and won by a frenchman named Nénot, but the project was never carried out. Two years later, in 1882, a new invitation was announced but was only extended to Italian architects and it also came with precise instructions on how the project was to be developed:
* The monument was to rise in the northern part of the Campidoglio (one of the seven hills of Rome)
* It had to be aligned with Via del Corso
* There had to be a bronze equestrian statue of the king
* It had to be large enough to cover the buildings behind and the side of the Church of Saint Mary of Aracoeli
The overall shape was free, to be built at the discretion of the architect. Ninety eight projects were submitted and the royal commission voted unanimously in favour of the young architect Giuseppe Sacconi from Marche.
As was often the case for other monuments, several artists and architects were involved in the work. After the death of Giuseppe Sacconi in 1905 it was taken over first by Gaetano Koch, then Manfredo Manfredi and finally Pio Piacentini. The work on the monument was finally completed in 1935, long after its inauguration in 1911.
The 'Vittoriano' was built in a neoclassical style with techniques which were very advanced for its time. These techniques celebrate the grandeur of Rome, the elected legitimate capital of Italy, the unity of the country and the freedom of its people.”

The shahrah-e-Liaquat is road where the various commercial plazas and buildings are situated and besides this the road also has the honor for having on its brink the buildings of Karachi Cahmber of Commerce & Industries which foundation stone was laid by none other than the father of the Indian nation Mahatma Gandhi while right on the other side there exist the school building of Sindh Madrasat-ul-Islam where the father of the Pakistani nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had attended his early schooling days.

The Sun was rising and the pigeons who flew by the statue of Mahatma Gandhi gave me a good reason to release the shutter…

Taken at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens during a visit to Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand.
Christchurch suffered a fatal 6.3 earthquake killing 185 people in February 2011 and the gardens somewhat survived, but I saw many damaged buildings in the city remaining closed or still undergoing major repairing works during my visit in 2013.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi , Father of the Nation , commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu.
He was born on October 2, 1869. Hence Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on 2 October.
The United Nations General Assembly announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that the 2nd of October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.

we lost Yasmin Ahmad the storyteller
I was at Delucca joining my friends to listen to a new voice from Indonesia - Chandra Satria when they suddenly asked for one minute of silence as a respect to the demise of Yasmin Ahmad
it came as a shock to me although I knew she was hospitalized. we (me and many Malaysians) prayed for her but she left us anyhow
I love her movies (especially Sepet) and many of Petronas ads
her struggle with local censorship board to portray Malaysians as the way we are in movies is an on-going war and I do believe the war should go on...

Penang Philomatic Union or Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre nowadays, is a reading club established by the "Tung Meng Hooi" - a political party started in Tokyo in 1905 by Dr Sun yat Sen with the intention of overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and forming of Republic of China
After the sucessful Uprising of 1911, Penang Philomatic Society also played a vital role in starting the modern Chinese Education in Penang. The premises was used as the "cradle" for two famous Chinese schools in Penang - namely Chung Ling High School as well as the Fukien Girls' School - (today's Penang Chinese Girls' High School). These schools were actually founded by key members of "Tung Meng Hooi" in Penang as they believed that proper education was the only way of overcoming the backwardness of Chinese community
In 2002, the premises was renovated to house the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre which is a museum to commemorate the historical episode in Penang that was replaceable to the contemporary history of China. The statues of Dr Sun Yat-Sen and two of his key followers in Penang, Goh Say Eng and Ooi Kim Kheng has been erected in front of the building as part of this musuem

This was taken at Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad which was the house of MK Gandhi. I got goose bumps when I saw this room!!! Unbelieveable, a man can sit in this room and his words reached every soul across the nation during a time when there was no television,no phones and most of the people were illiterates. He lives forever....
Bogyoke (Major General) Aung San (13 February 1915 – 19 July 1947) served as the 5th Premier of the British Crown Colony of Burma from 1946 to 1947. Initially he was a communist and later a social democratic politician. He was known as a revolutionary, nationalist, and as the founder of the Tatmadaw, and is considered the Father of the Nation of modern-day Myanmar. He was the founder of the Communist Party of Burma. He was responsible for bringing about Burma's independence from British rule, but was assassinated six months before independence. He is recognized as the leading architect of independence, and the founder of the Union of Burma. Affectionately known as "Bogyoke" (Major General), Aung San is still widely admired by the Burmese people, and his name is still invoked in Burmese politics to this day.
Aung San's daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, is a Burmese stateswoman and politician and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who is now serving as State Counsellor and 20th and First Female Minister of Foreign Affairs in Htin Kyaw's Cabinet.

Raj Ghat is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. It is a black marble platform that marks the spot of Gandhi's cremation on 31 January 1948. It is left open to the sky while an eternal flame burns perpetually at one end. It is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi in India on Ring Road officially known as Mahatma Gandhi Road. A stone footpath flanked by lawns leads to the walled enclosure that houses the memorial. Two museums dedicated to Gandhi
