European Praying Mantis | Mantis religiosa | 08-2022 | Ticino | Switzerland

My best photos are here: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/ticino-best-photos-of-southern-...

My latest ANIMAL VIDEO (warning, it's a bit shocking): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T2-Xszz7FI

ABOUT THE PHOTO:

I originally titled the image above 'Pray, Love, Eat (Your Husband)' as a joking reference to a bestselling novel and to the name of the insect depicted in the photo as well as to the species' well-documented gruesome mating behavior. I changed it now, because I wanted to be sure nobody would take the title as a recommendation (let me be very clear: if you are in fact NOT a female praying mantis, please refrain from eating your husband - regardless how tempted you may be - I'm sure he will thank you later 😉).

To provide a bit of context how I got the shot, as most of you will be well aware, this past summer was rather hot in many parts of the world, and Ticino in Switzerland (where I take all my photos), was no exception. It was in fact exceptionally hot for a long period without any rain in sight, and so I found myself getting up every morning before sunrise to water the garden.

On one such occasion in late August I noticed the frantic movement of a rather large insect that was trying to get away from the splashing water drops. I immediately put the hose down and went to investigate. I could hardly believe my luck: it was a (in Switzerland very rare) European mantis, a species I hadn't seen in a long time in my garden (certainly not since my dear mother's ill-fated attempt to transform part of the garden into a "flowery meadow" - a sad anecdote you can read all about here IF you have the stomach for it: www.flickr.com/photos/191055893@N07/52177556047/in/datepo... )

The mantis had sought shelter from the water between the blooming phlox and was now resting completely motionless among the flower petals, and so I dropped everything and ran for my camera. Once I was back at the scene I realized to my horror that it was still far too dark to get a usable photo; I was sure my "rare prize" would fly away at any instant, but all I could do now was anxiously wait for the sun to come up.

Minute after agonizing minute went by (and Mrs Mantis made suspicious "I-think-I'm-going-to-leave-now" movements several times that had me hold my breath in utter terror), but finally my camera was satisfied with the available light, and once I had shot about 800 photos, I started to relax a little.

In the end, I couldn't have been happier; it had long been my hope that my little oasis of botanic chaos would attract this rare species, and that I even got to photograph it was a dream come true. And apparently I needn't have worried about it flying away; it was a female, and as I later read mantis ladies are in most cases too heavy to fly.

And they seem to be territorial (or at least this one was); to my delight, I would find Mrs Mantis either in the phlox plants or on the nearby hibiscus every day for the remainder of my holiday (here's a photo on the hibiscus: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/western-green-lizard-lacerta-bi... ), and so I got to photograph her plenty (suspiciouly there was never any sign of a Mr Mantis though...).

Anyway, many greetings and have a lovely weekend ahead everyone - and as always, let me know what you think in the comments 😊

Watching every motion in my foolish lover's game

On this endless ocean, finally lovers know no shame

Turning and returning to some secret place inside

Watching in slow motion as you turn around and say

Take my breath away

Take my breath away

Watching, I keep waiting, still anticipating love

Never hesitating to become the fated ones

Turning and returning to some secret place to hide

Watching in slow motion as you turn to me and say

My love, take my breath away

Through the hourglass, I saw you

In time, you slipped away

When the mirror crashed, I called you

And turned to hear you say

If only for today, I am unafraid

Manly Beacon was named in honor of William L. Manly, who along with John Rogers, guided members of the ill-fated Forty-niners out of Death Valley during the gold rush of 1849.

This portion of the Wasatch Mountains is not as high or alpine as portions of the range to the north and south, and it is for this reason the Mormon Trail passed not far from here, cutting through the mountains to the deserts beyond, to what became Salt Lake City, and on to California (and the fated Donner Pass).

Freeze Creek makes this valley, and a fine hiking trail follows it the ridges above. Vegetation on the open slopes is grasses and forbs, with Gambel Oak and Bigtooth Maple (holding its orange leaves late into the winter this year) in clusters, and stands of Douglass fir on the northern, wetter slopes. Moose, Mule Deer, and Elk are abundant here. Big cats are rarely seen, though a Lynx was spotted near here this winter.

The red rock on the far slopes is the Nugget Sandstone, the northern version of, and the same age as the well-known Navajo Sandstone of Southern Utah, which forms many of the much-photographed formations of that region.

I took this photograph mid morning during a falling tide on an uninhabited, Ft. Pierce, Florida beach. The iPhone is "looking" SE. The NE wind is strong, swaying the sea oats and dune grasses. The scene must be much like what survivors of the ill fated, 1715 Spanish "Plate Fleet" encountered when their ships grounded and sank offshore. It's magical at night under the moon.

The little, lone tree watched from its fated spot as seasons came, and seasons passed; crops were planted, and crops were harvested. Humans would come, and humans would go. Birds would keep the little tree company, only to fly away as the seasons changed. Clouds would drift overhead, only to disappear over the horizon.

Seasons came, and seasons passed; and came, and passed. And the little, lone tree watched silently, rooted and permanent in the tiny, ever-changing field it knew as home.

Tucked up against a tree trunk within a spruce tree, a Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) can be difficult to spot. Their tiny size--they stand only seven to eight inches tall--and striated coloration help them disappear into the dappled shadows. There, they wait for nightfall, when darkness overtakes light and the world is enveloped in the earth's own shadow. Then the owl strikes out into the air, flitting silently up to an open tree branch from which it can gaze down upon the leaf litter and await the movement of an ill-fated mouse. In the surprise of being eaten, the mice will lose their heads--often literally, with the owls eating only their heads!

Mark, the Cuban Treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) changes colors, not typically to blend into an environment, but based on temperature and mood. This is similar to chameleons, who often communicate with one another through their flashy displays. Interestingly, the treefrog's skin is fused to his skull, an adaptation that minimizes water loss. Also, so invasive is this species that if you get caught selling one in Hawaii (where the these frogs have colonized Oahu), you could wind up in jail and paying fines of up to $25,000!

Mark lives in captivity after being rescued from what would have been an ill-fated trip stowing away on a greenhouse shipment.

In front of the building is Titanica, a sculpture by Rowan Gillespie depicting a diving female figure. Made of bronze, it is mounted on a brass base, evoking the design of figureheads on ships' prows, and is meant to represent hope and positivity. The figure was dedicated by representatives of the Anglican, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian churches on 27 March 2012, a few days before the opening of Titanic Belfast

Goldfinch. Manchester city centre.

I created this image near the river Irwell and outside the Lowry hotel which in reality is in Salford and not Manchester. The Irwell is the border between Manchester and Salford.

Goldfinches often feed on thistles which it is alleged were used to make the crown of thorns in the passion of Jesus Christ. The bird also appears in many images of the Madonna and Child, maybe as a portent of what is to come for the fated child. For myself, a confirmed atheist, I do not believe in all this religious nonsense any more than I believe James Bond to be a real character.

I didn't fall in love with you. I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way. I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose anyway. And I'd choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I'd find you and I'd choose you

A light house built as a tribute to the men and the exploration of Robert Falcon Scott who led the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition of 1910–1913

This 300s (S/N 3060) debuted at the 1956 Sebring 12 Hours driven by Cesare Perdisa and Carlos Menditeguy. Unfortunately the car suffered an accident and failed to finish, and was then involved in an accident whilst being towed after the event where the trailer it was in was hit by a truck.

The car was repaired by Maserati of America, and sold to John Edgar who entered it in the SCCA where it won twice with Carroll Shelby at the helm. In 1959 the car again entered into the Sebring 12 Hours, but suffered a fatal crash with driver Edwin Lawrence at the wheel.

Although the car seemed ill fated, it was again restored with a fibreglass body and a GM V8 engine before being completely overhauled and returned to original condition in 1991. In 1976, American Katherine McClure bought the car for $2,500 and used it on the road until it was sold to another american Kyle Fleming, who commented that it had an "incredibly ugly fibreglass aerodynamic thing stuck on to an alloy body".

The restoration in 1991 cost a reported $300,000 and was carried out by Cyril Embry. The engine installed is reportedly from chassis number 3068, however that has not been verified as the motor has been constructed from a number of parts and the S/N is not legible.

At this years Members Meeting I tried a few different things in terms of composition, the result of which is partly seen here with the capture of the front end of the car - conveniently with a driver standing suited and booted in the background as well to add some further atmosphere.

A beautiful mortal, Medusa was the exception in the family, until she incurred the wrath of Athena, either due to her boastfulness or because of an ill-fated love affair with Poseidon. Basing House was one of the iconic sieges of the English Civil Wars. Basing was the home of the Marquis of Winchester, a supporter of King Charles I. Parliamentary forces made three attempts to take Basing House, with first two sieges being broken before it fell at the third attempt.

It’s late summer of 1644, following the ill-fated attack on Odiham the Basing garrison have been pursued by Colonel Richard Norton back to Basing House. The garrison now reduced to 175 men with little food and ammunition dangerously low. Norton’s men, mortars and heavy artillery are once again besieging Basing House. With powerful Parliamentary garrisons in Abingdon, Reading and Newbury and the King's army in the west, Basing was unlikely to be rescued.

The only hope is Colonel Gage’s relief column sent from Oxford which will have to covertly make the journey to Basing and defeat Norton’s troops to resupply the garrison so enabling them to hold out until rescue by the King's armies.

Insects, you will know, have an exoskeleton to give them form and to uphold their organs, and moreover to protect them from outside Evils. That exoskeleton is made of a durable mixture of chitin and sclerotin (the latter is strengthening and also gives them that dark color). It's strong stuff and hard for enemies to penetrate except for some nematodes, and notably it can be attacked, softened and destroyed by some kinds of fungus. Once infected, ill is that insect's fate...

Our really very pretty Triple-Belted Shaggy Hoverfly - as far as I know there's not an English name, so I've made up this one - , Dasysyrphus tricinctus, is gravely ill. Her exoskeleton has been fungally infected; see the brownish spot on the last sections; she's probably not got very long to live. Regardless, Her Shagginess is enjoying the last nectar of also quickly fading Wild Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa.

Most people who visit Death Valley make a stop at Zabriskie Point, take a look at Manly Beacon and the Golden Canyon badlands and move on. If one has time to explore, there is a lot to see. This is a view of Manly Beacon, the Red Cathedral and some of the badlands from close to the intersection of the side trail to Red Cathedral. In late evening it is a lovely place. But it can be a bit intimidating to find your way back out without a good light. If you zoom in you can find several hikers on the trail below the Beacon.

Manly Beacon is an 800 foot chunk of rock named in honor of William L. Manly who guided members of the ill-fated Forty-niners out of Death Valley during the gold rush of 1849. He wrote a book about his exploits so his heroic version of events resulted in his name being applied to this peak as well as another elsewhere in Death Valley.
