For Dutch notions, the Vliehors is an exceptional region as far as landscape is concerned. The dimensions of the panorama here are in no proportion to man. One is surrounded by a sand plain stretching out to the horizon or to the endless surrounding sea. This sandbank was once a dune region in which the village West Vlieland was located. The northern border of that area and the location of West Vlieland now lie at least a kilometer further north in sea. Before 1950, the Vliehors was a large sand plain, without any growth whatsoever. Since that year, Rijkswaterstaat began placing branches and reed screens on the Vliehors, creating drift dikes. Three dikes were created in this manner: the permanent dike, running from the training camp in a westerly direction, and the first and second drift dike, which lie to the west of the air force tower. Since recently, a new dune area has been forming in the shelter of these drift dikes. Primary dunes grow into a complex of dunes and the low areas in between develop quickly into salt marsh. Interesting plants grow on this salt marsh and in the dunes; the first bushes have also been reported. On the Vliehors, one can easily see how a sand plain slowly changes into a dune area. Put this on a larger scale and one can imagine how a wadden island develops from a bare beach ridge into an island covered in growth. Seals sometimes lie on the tip of the Hors. Nowadays, man is using the Vliehors more regularly. The entire area is a training terrain for the Department for Defence. They named it Cornfield Range and it is the only place in the Netherlands where fighters and bombers can practice with both practice and live ammunitions. Airplanes of the Netherlands air force and different other NATO countries are daily visitors of the range. They can hire time, named slots, to let their pilots practice their skills at the range.
A Fatamorgana of the shoreline of the island Texel. The island seems splited into more islands but actually it's one island. This Straight Out of Camera photo taken from Vlieland an island in the North Sea - The Netherlands. This optical phenomenon occurs because rays of light are strongly bent when they pass through air layers of different temperatures, like here with such warm sandbank and cool sea air. Fata Morgana mirages tremendously distort the object or objects which they are based on, such that the object often appears to be very unusual, and may even be transformed in such a way that it is completely unrecognizable.

The Great Belt (Danish: Storebælt) is a strait between the main Danish islands of Zealand (Sjælland) and Funen (Fyn). Effectively dividing Denmark in two, the Belt was served by the Great Belt ferries from the late 19th century until the islands were connected by the Great Belt Fixed Link in 1997–98.
The Great Belt is the largest and most important of the three straits of Denmark that connect the Kattegat to the Baltic Sea. The others are the Oresund and the Little Belt.

Bordering with the North Sea and Wadden Sea, Holland has hundreds of kilometers of great coast. Dutch beaches are characterized by massive sand dunes and broad sandy beaches which, in the right conditions, can be a delight. It is the perfect place to enjoy the sun, explore the sandy nature, catch a wave or have a good seafood dinner. The Wadden Islands attract people throughout the year because of the unspoiled nature reserves, wildlife, beautiful beaches and charming villages. In spring and autumn they are the perfect place for a refreshing break, while in summer you are assured of a delightful beach holiday. In June 2009 UNESCO has put the Wadden Sea on the World Heritage list. The area has been placed on this list because it’s unique in its variety. The Wadden Sea has many different kinds of habitat and therefore offers a home to many plant and animal species.

This Straight Out of Camera Photo taken on Vlieland an island in the North Sea - The Netherlands. During the weekdays it's a training terrain for the NATO airforce. But in the weekend you can igore all warning signs and enjoy the dimensions of the panorama here. On this day the sand became very hot when exposed to the warm sun, easily being more than 10°C hotter than the sea air one meter above, enough to cause this inferior mirage. The real object is the blue sky and the Leopard tank in that direction, meaning we see a bright bluish patch on the ground in the distance. For exhausted travelers in the desert it appears as a lake of water. This is called a "desert mirage". Not a lot of people know about this place, so I was here all alone! It's quite an unique experience since the Netherlands has one of the highest population densities in the world. And yet I was here all alone. I'm sure this is the quietest place in the Netherlands. When you visit this place don't make a mistake to visit this place in the weekdays!
English:
A fata morgana, Italian translation of Morgan le Fay, the fairy shapeshifting half-sister of King Arthur, is a mirage, an optical phenomenon which results from a temperature inversion.
Fata Morgana are usually seen in the morning after a cold night which has resulted in the radiation of heat into space. In this form of mirage, objects on the horizon or even beyond the horizon, such as islands, cliffs, ships or icebergs, appear elongated and elevated, like "fairy tale castles".
The way this mirage is caused is this: in calm weather, when warm air lies over cold dense air near the surface of the ground, the undisturbed interface between these two air masses can act as a refracting lens, producing an upside-down image, over which the distant direct image appears to hover.
The first mention of the "Fata Morgana" phenomenon in English was in 1818, when this type of mirage was observed in the Strait of Messina, between Calabria and Sicily. It is also commonly seen in high mountain valleys, such as the San Luis Valley of Colorado where the effect is exaggerated due to the curvature of the floor of the valley canceling out the curvature of the Earth. These mirages are also seen in Arctic seas on very still mornings, and are common on Antarctic ice shelves.
Fata Morgana are superior mirages. Superior mirages are distinct from the more common inferior mirages, which create the illusion of distant pools of water in the desert and on hot roads.

Untuk sahabat Muslim yang berada di Malaysia:
FENOMENA ISTIWA UTAMA [istiwa a'dzam] MATAHARI DI KAABAH:

Mew Island as seen from Whitehead through a 600 mm equivalent lens. One of the the Copeland Islands off Donaghadee. Apparently this is called a Fata Morgana superior mirage. Named after the witch Morgan le Fay from the King Arthur legends as some people thought the mirages were created by witchcraft.

The Namib is a coastal desert in southern Africa. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place". According to the broadest definition, the Namib stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa, extending southward from the Carunjamba River in Angola, through Namibia and to the Olifants River in Western Cape, South Africa.[1][2] The Namib's northernmost portion, which extends 450 kilometres (280 mi) from the Angola-Namibia border, is known as Moçâmedes Desert, while its southern portion approaches the neighboring Kalahari Desert. From the Atlantic coast eastward, the Namib gradually ascends in elevation, reaching up to 200 kilometres (120 mi) inland to the foot of the Great Escarpment.[1] Annual precipitation ranges from 2 millimetres (0.079 in) in the most arid regions to 200 millimetres (7.9 in) at the escarpment, making the Namib the only true desert in southern Africa.[1][2][3] Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for roughly 55-80 million years, the Namib is also the oldest desert in the world.[1][3]
The desert geology consists of sand seas near the coast, while gravel plains and scattered mountain outcrops occur further inland. The sand dunes, some of which are 300 metres (980 ft) high and span 32 kilometres (20 mi) long, are the second largest in the world after the Badain Jaran Desert dunes in China.[1] Temperatures along the coast are stable and generally range between 9–20 °C (48–68 °F) annually, while temperatures further inland are variable—summer daytime temperatures can exceed 45 °C (113 °F) while nights can be freezing.[4] Fogs that originate offshore from the collision of the cold Benguela Current and warm air from the Hadley Cell create a fog belt that frequently envelopes parts of the desert. Coastal regions can experience more than 180 days of thick fog a year.[1][3] While this has proved a major hazard to ships—more than a thousand wrecks litter the Skeleton Coast—it is a vital source of moisture for desert life.
The Namib is almost completely uninhabited by humans except for several small settlements and indigenous pastoral groups, including the Ovahimba and Obatjimba Herero in the north, and the Topnaar Nama in the central region.[2] Owing to its antiquity, the Namib may be home to more endemic species than any other desert in the world.[4] Most of the desert wildlife is arthropods and other small animals that live on little water, although larger animals inhabit the northern regions. Near the coast, the cold ocean water is rich in fishery resources and supports populations of brown fur seals and shorebirds, which serve as prey for the Skeleton Coast's lions.[4] Further inland, the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest game park in Africa, supports populations of African Bush Elephants, Mountain Zebras, and other large mammals. Although the outer Namib is largely barren of vegetation, lichens and succulents are found in coastal areas, while grasses, shrubs, and ephemeral plants thrive near the escarpment. A few types of trees are also able to survive the extremely arid climate.[4]
Alluding to the phenomenon Fata Morgana, which is an unusual and complex form of mirage that is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon, this outdoor sculpture consisting of 500 running feet of golden, mirror-polished discs can be seen covering the oval walkway of Madison Square Park.
This "glistening procession for the ambulatory viewer" appears to be weightless hovering in the upper register of the viewer. The metal forms are perforated with foliage patterns and simulate walking through a deep dark forest. The golden mirrors reflect the patterns on the walkway and create abstract flickering effects from both the sunlight coming in from above the canopy and the people walking below.
Teresita Fernández (American, b. 1968) explains what I find most fascinating about her art on the park art page. “Fata Morgana is a site-specific work designed for, and inspired by, Madison Square Park,” said Ms. Fernández. “My concept was to invert the traditional notion of outdoor sculpture by addressing all of the active walkways of the Park rather than setting down a sculptural element in the Park’s center. By hovering over the Park in a horizontal band, Fata Morgana becomes a ghost-like, sculptural, luminous mirage that both distorts the landscape and radiates golden light.”
