Fastener tie-off detail.

An excellent tongue-in-cheek look at some of the special bolts required for those difficult holes.

Advantages of Self-clinching Fasteners:-

• Provide Strong threads in metal

• Installs into a plain, round hole.

• Installed using any parallel acting squeezing force.

DESIGN FOR ASSEMBLY

Self-clinching fasteners help designers meet DFA parameters which include:

• Fewer parts to handle. Hardware such as washers, lock washers and loose nuts are no longer required in final assembly.

• Less total assembly time. Fewer parts and less steps mean shorter assembly time.https://www.advancehydrau.com/product_main.html?parent_id=33

Scientists in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Materials Science and Technology Division collaborated with JFE Steel Corporation on using ORNL’s friction stir spot welding technology to join overlapping sheets of JFE’s advanced high-strength steel. The scientists used the SNAP pressure diffractometer at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source for its ability to image the sample welds at different depths, which enabled creating a high-resolution 3D reconstruction of the welded material for detailed analysis. The result of the technique is an extremely strong spot weld that retains the strength and other properties of the original bulk material. Such welds eliminate the added weight of fasteners and avoid causing structural weakening and other defects associated with the high-temperature melting and resolidification of fusion (arc) welding.

Williams Fasteners, was founded in 1870 by the Williams brothers, and was based at Green Lane in Shalesmoor in Sheffield until 1997. The company then relocated to the outskirts of Sheffield near the M1 to make distribution easier. It’s really nice to see it didn’t shut down.

It is this original site that is currently available to exploration. However the place, with its nooks and crannies, has been purchased for redevelopment and so will probably see workmen starting soon and all the cubbies will be ripped out.

One has to wonder if Mr Williams was some kind of obsessive compulsive, everything in its place - kind of a dude. I can just picture him wandering around – not a nut or bolt out place! I’ve never seen so many cupboards in my life!! I found a fair amount of rotting Paperwork

I loved this explore. We got disorientated inside and a bit lost in the dark amongst the cuboards. It has the feel of an old family business, lots of cool health and safety posters from the 80s proffering good advice.

In 2005 the company changed hands and for the first time the Williams family were no longer a part of the management of this local Sheffield business.

One of Southwest Fastener's friends on Facebook posted this picture of their 1st place finish thanks to the #BoltHeads products holding it together! Congratulations to Miller Racing Car #26 on yet another 1st place finish!

This small and light device sets a single staple. It has an about 4½-in. base containing a clamp and a separate, about 4½-in. long plunger with a channel into which you put the staple, legs outward. You clamp papers to be stapled on the base, insert the plunger containing a staple, and then hit the plunger to push the staple through the papers. Then, to clinch the staple, you must turn the paper over, insert the projecting points of the staple into the plunger, and hit it again.First introduced in the 1890s and produced through at least the early 1900s. Made by the Philadelphia Novelty Manufacturing Co., Philadelphia.

The signs on the outside say it made screws, nails and the likes. Now it is empty and derelict.

It has been a home to lightenginefilms.co.uk/ and we have done many visits, this one in The Snow of 2009.
