Chimborazo is a currently inactive stratovolcano in the Cordillera Occidental range of the Andes. Its last known eruption is believed to have occurred around 550 AD.[5]
With a peak elevation of 6,268 metres (20,564 ft), Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador. It is the highest peak near the equator. Chimborazo is not the highest mountain by elevation above sea level, but its location along the equatorial bulge makes its summit the farthest point on the Earth's surface from the Earth's center.
Wetterhorn (3704 m) is a peak in the Bernese Alps, towering over the village Grindelwald. It has three peaks, the highest of which is the Mittelhorn (3704 m), and the lowest and farthest is Rosenhorn (3689 m). A characteristic feature of the summit is its north-west wall, 1,300 meters high.

Common Frog - Rana temporaria
The common frog (Rana temporaria), also known as the European common frog, European common brown frog, European grass frog, or simply a frog, is a semi-aquatic amphibian of the family Ranidae, found throughout much of Europe as far north as Scandinavia and as far east as the Urals, except for most of Iberia, southern Italy, and the southern Balkans. The farthest west it can be found is Ireland, where it has long been thought, erroneously, to be an entirely introduced species. They are also found in Asia, and eastward to Japan.
Common frogs metamorphose through three distinct developmental life stages — aquatic larva, terrestrial juvenile, and adult. They have corpulent bodies with a rounded snout, webbed feet and long hind legs adapted for swimming in water and hopping on land. Common frogs are often confused with the common toad Bufo bufo, but frogs can easily be distinguished as they have longer legs, hop, and have a moist skin, whereas toads crawl and have a dry 'warty' skin. The spawn of the two species also differs in that frogspawn is laid in clumps and toadspawn is laid in long strings.

Pikes Peak is the highest summit of the southern front range of the Rocky Mountains, in North America. The 14,115 ft (4,302 m) mountain is also the farthest east of the big peaks which contributed to its fame among early explorers and pioneers. When gold was discovered in the Colorado mountains, it became the symbol of the 1859 Gold Rush with the slogan, "Pikes Peak or Bust".
The supermoon of November 14, 2016, brought the moon closer to Earth than it has been since January 26, 1948. What’s more, the moon won’t come this close to Earth again until November 25, 2034. That makes the November 2016 full moon the closest and largest supermoon in a period of 86 years!
On November 14, 2016, at 6:23 ET, the distance between the centers of the moon and Earth will shrink to its smallest distance for the year: 221,524 miles (356,509 km). Approximately two weeks ago, the moon swung out to its farthest point for the year on October 31, 2016: 252,688 miles (406,662 km). That’s a difference of over 30,000 miles (50,000 km) in the moon’s distance in just two-weeks’ time. Earthsky.org

The farthest north you can go on the Great Norther Peninsula in Newfoundland. Even history has a hard time surviving in this rugged part of Canada. I captured this one very cold evening after a long day of rain and wind.
The dramatic, rugged coastline of Cabo da Roca, Portugal (farthest western point in continental Europe) haunts the soul with its beauty.

This melodic warbler is widely distributed across Britain & Ireland through the breeding season, and increasingly in winter too.
Blackcap breeding numbers have steadily increased in the UK since the late-1970s, and have also expanded their breeding range throughout northern Scotland and the island of Ireland during this time. They are now absent only on the highest Scottish peaks and farthest flung islands. In autumn, these breeding birds depart for southern Europe and are replaced by Blackcaps from central Europe. BTO research has helped show how garden bird feeding led to the evolution of this new migratory route and wintering strategy. Although widespread in winter, Blackcaps tend to be absent from the uplands at this time of year.
Blackcaps have a greyish overall appearance. The eponymous black cap is only found in the males; females and juveniles have a brown cap instead. The song is very similar to that of the Garden Warbler, but can be distinguished with practice. Blackcaps are found in parks, deciduous woodland and scrub, as well as at garden feeding stations.

Pico Agulhas Negras is on the list of the 10 highest peaks in Brazil and is located in the Upper Part of the Itatiaia National Park: it is in fifth place in the Brazil ranking, it is the first highest in the State of Rio de Janeiro and the third highest peak of Minas Gerais (2,791m / 9,157ft).
The name of the massif originates from the grooves, or channels, vertical grooves that, seen from afar, resemble needles parallel to each other.
It has a difficult level, due to the climbing sections and two points where climbing equipment is required. Starting from the park entrance, we walked 3 km / 1,86 mile along a dirt road to the Rebouças shelter.
From there, we entered the trail (2,6 km / 1,61 m) towards the summit, passing through typical vegetation and breathtaking landscapes. From the summit, we saw the Prateleiras Massif, Morro do Couto, Serra Fina, Pedra do Sino and Pedra do Altar.
In 5h32m / 6 km (round trip).
The Itatiaia National Park was created in June 1937 and is the first National Park created in Brazil. Located in Serra da Mantiqueira, it covers the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, and Bocaina de Minas and Itamonte, in the State of Minas Gerais.
10 highest in Brazil:
Neblina -2.995,30
31 de março -2.974,18
Bandeira- 2.891,32 ✅
Pedra da Mina - 2.798,06 ✅
Agulhas Negras - 2.790,94 ✅
Cristal - 2.769,05 ✅
Monte Roraima - 2.734,05
Morro do Couto - 2.680
Pedra do Sino de Itatiaia - 2.670
Pico dos Três Estados - 2.665
PS My personal record is the Veintimilla Summit at 6,234 meters (20,452 ft) SML, 'El Chimborazo' Volcano at 6,263 meters (20,702 ft) SML, Equador.
The summit of Mount Everest is higher above sea level, but the summit of Chimborazo is widely reported to be the farthest point on the surface from Earth's center.
Was super stoked to find 2 Arctic Terns in Richmond yesterday. We were cruising by in a boat when we spotted the stubby legged and stubby billed birds. There was an adult and juvenile present and the juv was begging away. A nice treat to see this rarity in Metro Vancouver. By the way did you know that Arctic Terns migrate from the arctic where they breed to spend the winter in Antartica and flies about 40,000 kms! It is the farthest yearly journey of any bird which is just incredible!
... Day two of the trip to Maine started on a breezy foggy morning along the farthest eastern point in the USA ... at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse.

Cuckoo - Cuculus Canorus
The common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, Cuculiformes, which includes the roadrunners, the anis and the coucals.
This species is a widespread summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters in Africa. It is a brood parasite, which means it lays eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly of dunnocks, meadow pipits, and reed warblers. Although its eggs are larger than those of its hosts, the eggs in each type of host nest resemble the host's eggs. The adult too is a mimic, e that species is a predator, the mimicry gives the female time to lay her eggs without being seen to do so.
The English word "cuckoo" comes from the Old French cucu and it first appears about 1240 in the poem Sumer Is Icumen In - "Summer has come in / Loudly sing, Cuckoo!" in modern English.
The scientific name is from Latin. Cuculus is "cuckoo" and canorus, "melodious ".
A study using stuffed bird models found that small birds are less likely to approach common cuckoos that have barred underparts similar to the Eurasian sparrowhawk, a predatory bird. Eurasian reed warblers were found more aggressive to cuckoos that looked less hawk-like, meaning that the resemblance to the hawk helps the cuckoo to access the nests of potential hosts. Other small birds, great tits and blue tits, showed alarm and avoided attending feeders on seeing either (mounted) sparrowhawks or cuckoos; this implies that the cuckoo's hawklike appearance functions as protective mimicry, whether to reduce attacks by hawks or to make brood parasitism easier.
The common cuckoo is an obligate brood parasite; it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. At the appropriate moment, the hen cuckoo flies down to the host's nest, pushes one egg out of the nest, lays an egg and flies off. The whole process takes about 10 seconds. A female may visit up to 50 nests during a breeding season. Common cuckoos first breed at the age of two years.
More than 100 host species have been recorded: meadow pipit, dunnock and Eurasian reed warbler are the most common hosts in northern Europe; garden warbler, meadow pipit, pied wagtail and European robin in central Europe; brambling and common redstart in Finland; and great reed warbler in Hungary.
Studies were made of 90 great reed warbler nests in central Hungary. There was an "unusually high" frequency of common cuckoo parasitism, with 64% of the nests parasitised. Of the nests targeted by cuckoos, 64% contained one cuckoo egg, 23% had two, 10% had three and 3% had four common cuckoo eggs. In total, 58% of the common cuckoo eggs were laid in nests that were multiply parasitised. When laying eggs in nests already parasitised, the female cuckoos removed one egg at random, showing no discrimination between the great reed warbler eggs and those of other cuckoos.
It was found that nests close to cuckoo perches were most vulnerable: multiple parasitised nests were closest to the vantage points, and unparasitised nests were farthest away. Nearly all the nests "in close vicinity" to the vantage points were parasitised. More visible nests were more likely to be selected by the common cuckoos. Female cuckoos use their vantage points to watch for potential hosts and find it easier to locate the more visible nests while they are egg-laying.
" A clock stopped -- not the mantel's
Geneva's farthest skill
Can't put the puppet bowing
That just now dangled still.
An awe came on the trinket!
The figures hunched with pain,
Then quivered out of decimals
Into degreeless noon.
It will not stir for doctors,
This pendulum of snow;
The shopman importunes it,
While cool, concernless No
Nods from the gilded pointers,
Nods from seconds slim,
Decades of arrogance between
The dial life and him."

The southern tip of Canada’s Point Pelee National Park is the farthest south one can go on mainland Canada. Most of the park is either marsh or Carolinian forest, but this small tip extending out into Lake Erie is sand. This beach is constantly changing because of winds, lake currents and water levels.

It was considered a God by the ancient puruháes.
I took this at the Hyatt Regency along the river walk in San Antonio. The Hyatt spent a lot of money on this and several other waterfalls in the lobby and entrance. Guess that's why it's $200 a night.
I parked my car about 15 blocks away so I could use street parking. It still cost me 3 dollars to park. And, I almost couldn't find my car. I just happen to think about it as I was walking toward the Alamo and turned around to see what building I was parked near. I cam back at a different angle and couldn't see the AT&T building. So, I pulled out my phone and told it to find the building. Well, who knew there were two AT&T buildings and my phone took me to the one farthest away. Luckily, I was able to see the other building from where I was and found my car. Phew! I was afraid I would get a parking ticket.
Bike down Chimborazo:
At 6,310 meters (20,702 ft), Volcán Chimborazo is the highest peak in Ecuador. So don't just climb up it – mountain-bike down it!
Drove up to the refuge on its flanks and then freewheeled down, looking out for grazing vicuña as I went down.
***
Drove for just over two hours to Mount Chimborazo (6,310 meters/20,702ft), the highest and most impressive of Ecuador’s volcanoes. We parked at the lower refuge (4,800 meters / 15,748 feet) and continued on foot to the Edgar Whymper Refuge. Located at 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) this is the highest refuge in the world!
From here, it was all downhill- first on foot and then by bike I descended all the way to Ambato (2,800 meters / 9,186 feet).
This was an amazing bike ride through the highlands, with vicuñas being the sole inhabitants of these wild stretches.
On this tour, I enjoyed a breathtaking 70 km ride through varying landscapes in just one day. This trip is by far a favorite ride of previous cyclists.
Seldom does one have the chance to ride from the snow line of a volcano, through rural Andean patchwork fields, picnic with vicuñas and at the end of the ride arrived in a restaurant.
In Ambato, we unload the bikes and I returned to Quito by VIP taxi at about 150 km per hour. I told the taxi driver that he was not a driver, he was a Formula 1 driver. I haven't been in a car at this speed for a long time, especially at high altitudes.
***
Cycling down Volcán Chimborazo along a new designated bike path from Refugio Carrel to the park entrance is an exhilarating way to experience the mountain. Several agencies in Riobamba, including Pro Bici and Julio Verne, offer recommended biking excursions (per person from $45), which can include a hike from the first to the second refugios. After the initial steep downhill the route gets even more beautiful as you cycle through the páramo past families of vicuña.
Both are so good people (my guide Jose and his girlfriend), that several people (Ecuadorian Indians) hitchhiked on the side of the road, they stopped and offered. It was cold and windy, public transport takes a long time. In the end, Ecuadorian Indians offer to pay some amount, my guide did not accept payment. This moved me several times.
Offer a ride to strangers! (Confidence)
Strangers don't want alms. (Simultaneous retribution)
Beautiful Ecuadorian lessons.
Let me go up there, please, Pachamama!
Where the glacier ends.
As Ecuador's highest mountain, Chimborazo is a very popular climb and can be climbed year round with the best seasons being December–January and July–August.
The easiest (IFAS Grade: PD) and most climbed routes are the Normal and the Whymper route. Both are western ridge routes starting at the Whymper hut and leading via the Ventemilla summit to the main (Whymper) summit.
There are several other less used and more challenging routes on the other mountains faces and ridges leading to one of Chimborazo's summits:
Main (Whymper, Ecuador),
Politecnico (Central),
N. Martinez (Eastern).
The mountain is contained on the IGM (Instituto Geografico Militar) 1:50000 Map Chimborazo (CT-ÑIV-C1).

I was listening to the ocean
I saw a face in the sand
But when I picked it up
Then it vanished away from my hands, down
I had a dream I was seven
Climbing my way in a tree
I saw a piece of heaven
Waiting, impatient, for me, down
And I was running far away
Would I run off the world someday?
Nobody knows, nobody knows
And I was dancing in the rain
I felt alive and I can't complain
But now take me home
Take me home where I belong
I can't take it anymore
I was painting a picture
The picture was a painting of you
And for a moment I thought you were here
But then again, it wasn't true, down
And all this time I have been lying
Oh, lying in secret to myself
I've been putting sorrow on the farthest place on my shelf
La di da!
And I was running far away
Would I run off the world someday?
Nobody knows, nobody knows
And I was dancing in the rain
I felt alive and I can't complain
But now take me home
Take me home where I belong
I got no other place to go
Now take me home
Take me home where I belong
I got no other place to go
Now take me home
Take me home where I belong
I can't take it anymore
But I kept running for a soft place to fall
And I kept running for a soft place to fall
And I kept running for a soft place to fall
And I kept running for a soft place to fall
And I was running far away
Would I run off the world someday?
But now take me home
Take me home where I belong
I got no other place to go
Now take me home
Take me home where I belong
I got no other place to go
Now take me home, home where I belong
Now take me home, home where I belong
Now take me home, home where I belong
Now take me home, home where I belong
I can't take it anymore

Tonight, I’ll send you the firefly from that day
To your window
That means that I love you
I remember our first kiss
Every time, I close my eyes
And it takes me away to the farthest place
Like the words written in the sand
Where the waves are
I’m afraid you’ll disappear
So I always miss you
I can’t take out
All these words in my heart
But this means that I love you
How did someone like you come to me?
If only we could be together right now
How nice would it be
Like the words written in the sand
Where the waves are
I’m afraid you’ll disappear
So I always miss you
I can’t take out
All the things written in my diary
But this means that I love you
Tonight, I’ll send you the firefly from that day
To your window
I hope you have sweet dreams
I love these handsome and unique warblers.
Fun Facts:
Blackpoll Warblers hold the record for the longest overwater flight for a songbird. Using a tiny light level geolocator biologists have proven that Blackpoll Warblers fly an average of 2540 km (1800 miles) non-stop over an average of 62 hours, up to 3 days, corresponding to about 41 km/h. They fly ovver the Atlantic Ocean to reach their wintering grounds in Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, and South America.
The birds in Alaska fly the farthest of any of the Blackpoll Warblers to reach their breeding grounds and actually have developed longer wings to help them get to their wintering grounds faster. Check out my new blog at daretobird.blogspot.com
I wanted you to see the size of this place. When I found out it was purchased by and designed by the developers out of Austin, Texas, I wasn't surprised. The place is huge and they tried to touch on everything. It's positioned so people can sit out on the farthest deck and watch the sunset. Of course, small bars are out positioned in different areas of the deck. And sure, live bands..;) Sooooo Austin. Don't get me wrong, it's a great setup. It doesn't fit the rest of the city or coastal area, but that's the way it goes. I wonder how the locals feel about it?
In his central essay "The Poet," Ralph Waldo Emerson uses the Chimborazo as metaphor for the poet (and the creative genius in general), who "must stand out of our low limitations."
I have already uploaded flight shots of this species from Nome and don't usually upload birds on non natural perches but this was a unique moment. How often do you see a Tern on a street sign? My friend who went to Nome before me told me to be prepared to sit in Subway and watch Slaty-backed Gulls in the parking lot.
Well Nome had many of those moments but I miss walking through town and seeing Aleutian and Arctic Terns on street signs. In BC I usually only see Arctic Terns on pelagic trips as they fly overhead so to get this close to one, even if it is on a street sign was pretty cool. I find Terns to be so elegant. The Aleutian Tern in Nome was a lifer for me but seeing an Arctic Tern up close, was no less of a thrill.
Fun Fact: This bird migrates from the Arctic where it breeds to spend the winter in Antartica and flies about 40,000km. It is the farthest yearly journey of any bird. Just incredible!
The Niederhorn taken from the vilage of Wimmis (canton of Bern) Switzerland. . No, 8763.
The Niederhorn (elevation 1963 metres) is a peak of the Emmental Alps in the Bernese Oberland near Beatenberg. It is the peak farthest west in the Güggis ridge. From its summit you can see Lake Thun and the entire Bernese Alps.
An aerial cable car to the summit was completed in 1946 with a restaurant and children's playground at the top. Today the summit can be reached by the Seilbahnen Beatenberg-Niederhorn, a more modern gondola lift that runs from the village of Beatenberg, where it connects with the Thunersee–Beatenberg Bahn, a funicular with connections to the shipping services on Lake Thun.

Life in a Love
a poem by Robert Browning
Escape me?
Never
Beloved!
While I am I, and you are you,
So long as the world contains us both,
Me the loving and you the loth,
While the one eludes, must the other pursue.
My life is a fault at last, I fear:
It seems too much like a fate, indeed!
Though I do my best I shall scarce succeed.
But what if I fail of my purpose here?
It is but to keep the nerves at strain,
To dry one's eyes and laugh at a fall,
And baffled, get up to begin again,
So the chase takes up one's life, that's all.
While, look but once from your farthest bound,
At me so deep in the dust and dark,
No sooner the old hope drops to ground
Than a new one, straight to the selfsame mark,
I shape me
Ever
Removed!
Did you see the sky?
I think it means that we’ve been lost
Maybe one last time is all we need
I can’t really help it
If my tongue’s all tied in knots
Jumping off a bridge is just the farthest
That I’ve ever been...
PEEP THEM TURKEY DEETS!
Xo,
Sorchiee
Dragonfly species (Anisoptera) are characterized by long bodies with two narrow pairs of intricately veined, membranous wings that, while generally transparent, may have coloured markings. Unlike damselflies, the front and rear wing pairs are shaped differently. In addition, dragonflies rest with their wings spread horizontally, rather than held vertically against each other (with the exception of one very small family, Epiophlebiidae). Dragonflies have a more powerful build and are generally much stronger fliers than damselflies. The globe skimmer (or wandering glider, Pantala flavescens), a migratory dragonfly, for example, makes an annual multigenerational journey of some 18,000 km (about 11,200 miles); to complete the migration, individual globe skimmers fly more than 6,000 km (3,730 miles)—one of the farthest known migrations of all insect species. Dragonflies also have huge bulging eyes that occupy most of the head, giving some a field of vision approaching 360 degrees.

This chase is the farthest north I have ever been. We were really hustling to get up here as we wanted a picture in the Northwest Territories of Canada. But we came up about 40 clicks short of the border with Alberta when we intercepted them. Too bad as I will probably never get up here again. MacKenzie Northern is now operated by CN. There is a whole lotta nothing up here.
