Beautiful farmland on the Central California coast. (After heavy January rains, this field may very well be under water.)

British farming this November

A typical mixture of crops on Queensland's Southern Downs. Looking over this sunflower field, you can glimpse the rusty-brown fields of sorghum and other paddocks in various stages of preparation or still with stubble from the last crop.

A tractor equipped with a propane tank supplying rear-facing burners moves slowly across a farm field.

I'm not sure what the purpose of this flame treatment is, but most of the references I've found online suggest that it may be a means of weed control without using herbicides.

One rewarding factor in doing photo-tripping on a familiar route many times during a year, is that you get to know individual animals and birds that hunt or live in an area.

The last several summers my wife and I drive through a very isolated area west of Cambridge where we have become accustomed to seeing a Northern Harrier peruse a large grassy field. Sometimes he will fly a couple of feet above the ground with his eyes fixed looking for voles or other small animals to pounce on. Other times he will fly long loops around the field from a height of 10-12 feet looking for prey.

In all of our times of observing, we have never seen him perch in a tree until this week. After sitting for a while with his head turned toward us and his body pointing another, he decided to fly off the tree and in doing so gave us a spectacular view of his back as well as demonstrating how large he must look to a small animal with his wings extended.
