Sint Michielskerk

The architecture of Antoni Gaudí is famous all over the world. He was a pioneer of (Catalan) modernism and organic architecture. Some people say that his style is inspired by The Annunaki. There are even stories of very spiritual persons who have come out of their bodies and talked afterwards about Annunaki and the connection with Gaudí. It is fascinating but if it is true, I think we will never know. The buildings he designed or adapted are real works of art. The fairytale buildings are very mysterious and leave a lot to the imagination. He has been one of the few architects who beautify monsters (I don't mean myself again 😉) and reptilians. Casa Batlló is located on the Passeig de Gracia. It is the most expensive street in Spain when it comes to housing. The original apartment was very simple, but was adapted by Gaudi at the request of the then owner Batlló. He found his house very boring. Well, that can certainly no longer be said. I took this photo late in the evening in september 2019.

Xuas from Ghent is a gifted graffiti artist who attracts a lot of attention with his colorful and imaginative psychedelic murals. When you look at the detailed masterpieces, you immediately know that you are dealing with a creative artist brain. It is extra special because of a virtual 3D layer that has been added. I tested it with the camera on my phone and it's a very special experience. The mural is applied to a garage door of an old illustrious fire station. The building is now the hub of the beautiful social district of Moscou in the Gentbrugge sub-municipality of the metropolis of Ghent and has been used as a neighborhood building for many years. It is an initiative that arose due to the problems of the vacancy of many buildings in Ghent. Many activities take place in this characteristic building and the most diverse local residents come together here brotherly. More than 10 sports - arts - and welfare organizations are active. The local residents can have their bicycles repaired, among many other things, and you can practice yoga or take one of the many sports classes, such as the popular boxing lessons. As a former boxer myself I thought it would be great that a future Jamal Ben Saddik or even a new Gypsy King Tyson Fury is walking around in Santo. Unfortunately, the neighborhood center will soon be demolished for a housing project. It was known in advance that it was a temporary destination for the building, but the residents of Moscou in Ghent certainly deserve a new location. The name Moscou originated when the Russian army set up camp in the then Veldwijk around the time of Napoleon's defeat in Waterloo. The Russians were there then to protect the inhabitants of Ghent and the French King who was a guest there. The district was popularly called Moscow from then on, but officially it became Moscou with a c, which sounds more Flemish.

Symbolica | Botanicum 12/12/2019 16h12

The third scene of Symbolica is Botanicum where you pass thru the combination of a horticulture greenhouse and aquarium. The riders are face to face with the so-called Fabelvis, a Fable Fish.

Botanicum

Through a short connecting corridor and a corner with rock work, the Fantasy sailors enter one after the other into a Victorian greenhouse with a vaulted roof and ornate trusses: the Botanicum. Special plants such as Flos Reijnders and Flora Magica grow along the columns and in large pots, which open and close their petals. The light inside dims and the magic shops spread out over the glass panels, after which we see that there is no outside air behind it, but a kind of underwater cave. A great mythical creature that looks a bit like a whale, it swims down from the height and makes whale sounds. The friendly-looking animal with its tail (accidentally) breaks the glass, after which more and more cracks appear and water runs between the trusses and panels. The light makes a short circuit through the water and falls out. Quickly the fantasy float drives out of the Botanicum, a path where Pardoes points the way to a safer place among a number of plants: the Gates Passage that gives access to the Treasures Boudoir, the Music Salon and the Heroes Cabinet.

Mient 31, Alkmaar.

Rijksmonument 7320

A mascaron is an ornament in the form of a face used in architecture and the decorative arts. Originally intended to frighten evil spirits from entering a building, the compositional element became purely decorative, usually human in appearance, sometimes imaginative with elements from nature, such as leaves or animal heads. The most recent architectural styles to extensively employ it were Beaux Arts and Art Nouveau. In addition to architecture, mascarons are used in the other applied arts.

52 Weeks Project

One week before opening...

Location: Efteling Grand Hotel, Efteling, Kaatsheuvel (NL)

Coordinates: 51°38'58.3"N 5°02'40.1"E

Reason: I was for the 5th time in 2025 in De Efteling to visit the park and capture some updates of the things which might have changed since my last visit. Like the new fairytale The Princess and the Pea (in Dutch De Prinses op de Erwt). But also of the brandnew luxery hotel within the park limits of the park; Efteling Grand Hotel. One week prior to the opening on 01/08/2025.

Efteling Grand Hotel: The Efteling Grand Hotel is part of the Efteling theme park. Located right next to the Efteling entrance building, it's the first accommodation within the park's boundaries. This makes it similar to the hotels at the entrances of Disney theme parks, such as Disneyland.

The hotel has seven floors and is 106 meters wide. It has 140 rooms and suites with a total of 644 beds. The rooms and suites have different color themes: red, blue, green, or yellow. There are three different dining and drinking areas: Café Biscuit coffee bar, Brasserie 7 restaurant, and Restaurant & Bar Mystique. The latter also has its own cocktail bar. The restaurants and gift shop are also open to non-hotel guests. In the basement, there's a swimming pool and spa, including a sauna, steam room, and massage parlor.

Weather: Sunny, 26° C

A brand new palace was built, an increasingly special and impressive building during its construction. High walls and many towers, surrounded by huge rocks. It can rightly be called a palace.

The Pagoda seen from the Hartenhof (square) with the Christmas tree.

Winter Efteling 2024

The Winter Efteling takes place from November 11, 2023 till February 2, 2024. With life-size snow globes on the Ton van de Venplein and in Ruigrijk. Get in there and let it snow! That produces a real winter picture. Also this winter you will also see the elves from Droomvlucht on the Ton van de Venplein. They brought a music box.

The Playground will also change into the attractive Warm Winter Meadow this year. Enter through the gate and discover extra entertainment and a heart-warming musical offering every day. Take a picture with Pardoes at the sleigh and Fay the Fairy and Pinocchio make it snow. Or listen to the polyphonic music of Zang en Happy. Warm up at the Bonfires, play games at the various chalets, enjoy delicious winter treats and browse through the winter souvenirs. Or skate a round on the larger skating rink in the open air.

Pagode

Pagoda (or "Pagode" in Dutch) is an unobtrusive variation of an observation tower in the Efteling amusement park in the Netherlands. It was designed by Ton van de Ven and started operating in 1987.

The Pagode, developed by Intamin as a flying island, is described by Efteling as a "flying temple".

It consists of a 155 tons weighing cabin and a 225-ton hydraulic arm which pivots it from the ground up to a height of 60 metres.

The counterweight of 340 tons sinks 30 metres into the ground.

To maintain the balance of the cabin itself the weight of the 100 visitors is distributed over its two sides.

The rotating cabin has a 15 metre high pagoda on top of it.

Etymology studies indicated that the word pagoda means tomb in Thai (ธาตุเจดีย). Preoccupied with upsetting a whole nation, as with Fata Morgana, Efteling choose the Dutch word "pagode" as the ride name.

Ride length: 4 minutes

Ride capacity: 1500 passengers/ hour

Cost: €3.6 million

Symbolica 08/12/2020 13h49

A detail of the Panorama Salon in Symbolica, the second scene of this dark ride. One of the luminous butterflies that flutter towards you while you enjoy the view over Hartenstad from the balcony.

Panorama Salon

The Panorama Salon offers a wide view or "panorama" over Hartenstad, the city located next to the palace, executed like a diorama at night. Before the Fantasy Float drive up one of the three balconies, we see a table on the right side of the route with butterflies standing in front of a large painting. They twinkle and come to life for a moment. Once on the balcony, we see dozens of buildings and towers in Symbolican architecture, nestled between high mountains and a volcano. A breeze blows over the balcony and magic shops scatter over the structures, lighting them up. Large luminous butterflies appear at the top of the scene and flutter towards the visitors. Backwards the Fantasievaarders drive down the balconies to the Botanicum.

Symbolica

Symbolica is a trackless dark ride in the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands, which opened the 1st of July 2017.

Originally, an attraction called Hartenhof would be constructed on the site of Symbolica. The project was postponed multiple times, until it was renamed Symbolica. Consturction started January 11th 2016.

The story is of Symbolica is all about visiting king Pardulfus, who lives in Hartenhof (court of hearts). While the visitors await their audience with the king, a character called Pardoes appears. Pardoes then guides the visitors through hidden parts of the castle.

Before the visitors can enter their Fantasievaarders, there is a pre-show with two animatronics. A staircase magically opens and the visitors are directed to the boarding station. Here, they can choose one of three different routes: Heldentour (Hero tour), Muziektour (Music tour) and Schattentour (Treasure tour). Kasteel Buitenplaats

Herengracht 1, 1398 AA Muiden, Noord-Holland

Rijksmonument nummer: 30107

=====

Aquanura 24/06/2020 09h59

For the first time I enjoyed Aquanura in the early morning prior opening of the park. It was refreshing!

Aquanura

Aquanura is the name of a fountain system in the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands. The premiere took place on 31 May 2012 on the park's 60th anniversary, and it opened to the public the following day. The fountain was developed by WET Design, Efteling and Tebodin Consultants & Engineers. The fountain is the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world, after The Dubai Fountain and the Fountains of Bellagio] though it could better be compared as a smaller version of Disney's World of Color.

The show falls within the scope of the Frog King theme. As such, 4 large frog replicas are placed in the pond.

Aquanura has a total of 200 fountains, subdivided in 9 types, each with its own reach and effect. 4 of the types are custom designed and built for this project, as are the light effects. 800 lamps will be placed in the pond, and 29 light- and audio posts are placed around the pond, with Moving heads on top, all in support of the water show. The super shooters reach a height of 45 meters, well under their listed capacity.

The whole project was constructed by Water Entertainment Technologies (WET), Tebodin Netherlands B.V., Heijmans NV, Kuijpers Piping & Procestechniek, Hoppenbrouwers Elektrotechniek B.V. and Primagaz Nederland B.V. at a total cost of € 17.000.000. The watershow can normally be seen at closing time of the park, extra shows are scheduled on busy days and days with extended opening hours. Since the opening of the original Aquanura, the symphony has changed. It has been remade with a couple of new song added.

Aquanura is located in the Rowing Pond, next to the Fata Morgana in the themed area Fantasierijk.

Polles Keuken 06/07/2020 12h31

First lunch at Polles Keuken. This is about pancakes, pancakes and pancakes. The best thing about the interior is that the stove in the middle of the restaurant goes crazy every 15 minutes. This makes a lunch of dinner an experience.

Polles Keuken

Polles Keuken is a pancake restaurant at the end of the Pardoes Promenade, named after Polle, the chef at Hartenhof. The building was inaugurated on February 1, 2012 and officially opened on March 30, also National Pancake Day.

Originally, the plan was to open the restaurant together with the Hartenhof attraction, as part of the Realm of Fantasy. However, an attraction was still to come, only in 2017 Symbolica was opened. The restaurant and building are designed by Sander de Bruijn, Robert-Jaap Jansen and Jeroen Verheij.

In addition to the pancake restaurant, the building houses more catering outlets. On the Pardoes Promenade you will find the coffee counter 'De Gebrande Boon' and a point of sale Swirl's Ice Cream, 'Smooth Ice', on the Marerijk side is the donut sale Rondje van de Molen.

Inside we find a richly decorated and cozy space that can accommodate 140 guests, both inside and on the newly landscaped terrace, which is located directly on the Promenade. There is a high wooden ceiling and a stone inner ring where you can sit on both benches and chairs. The biggest eye-catcher is a central cooking stove with pots and pans and glazed cakes and food. Every 15 minutes the stove briefly 'goes crazy', with the utensils starting to move and the wheels above the stove rotating faster and faster, accompanied by music and sound effects by Marco Kuypers.

The square in front of Symbolica and pancake restaurant Polles Keuken is called Hartenhof. In tribute to the concept attraction Hartenhof that eventually became Symbolica in 2017.

Seen from the single riders queue on the terrace of Symbolica, the Palace of Fantasy.

The castle consists of eleven scenes, where each of the three routes attends nine scenes.

Aquanura 25/08/2022 19h24

Aquanura with temperatures of about 30° C (the maximum was 34° C this day) was a welcome refreshing surprise with headwind. The lens of my camera didn't like it much, but it could be wiped dry.

Aquanura is located in the former Rowing Pond, next to the Fata Morgana in the themed area Fantasierijk.

mascaron Heemraadssingel

A mascaron is an ornament in the form of a face used in architecture and the decorative arts. Originally intended to frighten evil spirits from entering a building, the compositional element became purely decorative, usually human in appearance, sometimes imaginative with elements from nature, such as leaves or animal heads. The most recent architectural styles to extensively employ it were Beaux Arts and Art Nouveau. In addition to architecture, mascarons are used in the other applied arts.

Symbolica | Observatorium 12/12/2019 12h51

The first scene of the dark ride Symbolica is an Observatory. From this beautiful scene where the "fantasy floads" are being enchanted and start their yourney through the Palace of Fantasy, Symbolica. It is actually Almar's workspace with library and planetarium.

Observatorium

The Observatory is the first scene in the Symbolica attraction. It is the workshop of Grand Magister Almar who studies the universe there.

After leaving the station, the Fantasievaarders first pass a closed door. Participants in the Music Tour are even right in front of it, and see that the elaborate four-part lock closes itself. Backwards, therefore, and through a corridor with a niche with stairs on the right, which is lit with candles and crystals. The corridor leads to the Observatory, a large, round room.

Almar in the middle of his observatory

The Observatory is the workplace of Grootmagister Almar, the teacher of Pardoes. Along the walls are cupboards arranged like in a library, with books and natural history and scientific objects. Halfway there is a balustrade with above it more cupboards with books, and other objects such as an ostrich skeleton. In the middle of the room is a stage on which we see Almar standing, an animatronic with a long beard wrapped in a pipe. He is talking, perhaps spells from the book that is lying on his catheder decorated with a mythical animal. All around him are all kinds of astronomical instruments, including the Chronoscope and the Sterrentwinkelvanger.

A planetarium with various planets hangs from the ceiling, moving slowly through space. The most striking are three luminous spheres that resemble a red giant. Up there again we see a dome vault with a starry sky. In a cupboard with gears you see a luminous emerald, the 'Etmaler', which supplies the energy for the planetarium.

On the left there is a double door, actually access to the Fantasievaarders garage. To the right is another single door that serves as an emergency exit. Both the emergency exit and the garage have a door on the left side of the building, on the side of the Pagode.

The striking dome of the Observatory was already visible on the construction site in the summer of 2016

Pardoes emerges from a place behind the wizard and while uttering the spell Illumina Fantasia! Use your imagination! Illumina Fantasia! With his Twinkle torch he activates the glass ball that is on every fantasy sailor. The fantasy spreads directly through magic shops and at the top of the dome-shaped vault of the space two constellations become visible: bull and archer, probably not accidentally the constellations of designers Henny Knoet and Sander de Bruijn.

The Fantasy sailors speed up and leave the room again, viewed from the entrance, at 5 o'clock, and head to the Panorama Salon.

Second Best "52 Weeks Project"

Since I have been joining the 52 Weeks Project on Flickr it has happened several times that I had to chose between two or more self portraits that week. A difficult choice. The solution is to create a set of all good alternatives. Life is full of choices and sometimes a week has too much opportunities. This is one of those alternatives, the second best. And sometimes just as good.

The best way to photograph this room in the Treasure Tour in Symbolica is a mirror selfie...

Location: The niche of the Treasure Tour in Symbolica in De Efteling, Kaatsheuvel (NL)

Coordinates: Google Maps:

51.65012748083174, 5.050413937351741

(copy & paste on Google Maps)

Reason: I was never able to properly photograph this niche with mirrors from the Treasure Tour in Symbolica and making a self-portrait in the mirrors seemed to me the only way. Of which acte. Sanne and Leon next to me were busy with the interactive part of this ride in this mirror room.

Treasure Tour: The niche of the Treasure Tour is a mirror room with pointed arch vaults, containing a colorful glowing large brilliant cut diamond that is reflected countless times in the walls and ceiling. Visitors in the front row of the Fantasy Fighter can change the color of the diamond through the dashboard.

Pardoes Promenade 08/03/2022 11h04

It has been said that the magic of the Efteling does not begin on Dwarrelplein and the House of the Five Senses, but precisely after this railway crossing to the Pardoespromenade. The preparatory work for the new hotel is in full swing and the renewal of the track seems to be part of this.

Pardoes Promenade

The Pardoes Promenade is the broad, expansive avenue that connects the Dwarrelplein with the Hartenhof Square in front of Symbolica. The avenue was designed in unison with the former interpretation of that place, the Brink, and is executed in the visual language of the World of Pardoes. The primary goal of the Pardoes Promenade is the supply of visitors from the entrance to the various park areas, and vice versa at the end of the day. The avenue of 21 meters wide and 270 meters long thus serves as the main vein of the park. There are dozens of eye-catching bronze-colored lanterns, the colossal Wonderwachters lampposts.

The promenade was opened in 2000. It was created within the implementation of the so-called Butterfly Vision on the park, with Promenade and Brink as "body" and the four surrounding empires as colorful "wings", and is a design by landscape architect Mariëlle Kok of Grontmij in collaboration with Henny Knoet and Chris van Grinsven from the Efteling.

Trix levert wel know how.

Begin 1971 neemt Mangold Trix over. Trix moet zelf modellen ontwikkelen.Punt.

One of my favorite parts of this darkride is the first one, the Observatorium, the workplace of a wizard called Almar. Almar is present in the form of an animatronic. This room is arranged like a library. This space is full of details from top to bottom and it is one of the spaces where fantasy floats accelerate towards Panorama Salon, a miniature city that's similar to Diorama.

Street art is nu eenmaal vergankelijk.

Charles Avery (b. 1973, Oban, Scotland) is an explorer of the ’old-fashioned’ kind. For the last decade he has been hard at work on his project ’The Islanders’, using drawings, texts, video, objects and installations to create a portrait of a fictional island. Charles Avery – What’s the matter with Idealism? showcases the results of the last five years of his project.

The exhibition will transport visitors to Onomatopoeia; bustling port, main town and gateway to the island’s great wilderness: one time colonial outpost turned boomtown, turned depression-ravaged slum and regenerated city of culture and tourist destination.

The island is a carefully considered fictional world described by Charles Avery in a multitude of different ways and nourished by philosophical reflection. The project is inspired by the ideas of real-life philosophers and artists such as William Blake and Joseph Beuys. For example, there is an ongoing debate in Onomatopoeia about the existence of a mythical being called the Noumenon, which – despite the best efforts of hunters and adventurers – nobody has ever glimpsed. The exhibition will include character studies, objects and scenes that give an insight to the culture, economy and beliefs of the Onomatopoeians.

His interest in literature, mathematics and philosophy is apparent throughout his work. For example, Avery has designed trees for his island, the forms of which are based on numerical patterns. The narrative drawings that form the basis of his oeuvre are skilfully rendered, highly imaginative, extremely detailed and full of humour. Over the years Avery has developed an ever-growing vocabulary of ideas, characters, architecture and techniques, enabling him to portray this ’other country’. With increasing conviction, coherence and attention to detail, he creates a compelling and immersive narrative that the viewer can identify with and inhabit.

The world Charles Avery depicts in ’The Islanders’ is not intended to be a utopia. The island is a fictive society, which, in various ways, holds up a mirror to our own. For example, ’The Eternal Dialectic’ (the given name of the endless philosophical argument that smolders throughout the bars and salons of the town) is a reflection on our own pursuit of knowledge, understanding of the concept of truth and our beliefs in its attainability.

By taking the island as the overarching theme of his artistic oeuvre, Avery also gives himself the freedom to work with a wide range of media and ideas.

Aquanura 03/11/2020 16h33

Aquanura, with a soft G is the fourth show that was programmed for the fountain spectacle Aquanura, and is entirely devoted to the Noord-Brabant singer Guus Meeuwis.

The show will initially run from October 9 to November 4, 2020 and will run for 12 minutes. Due to the RIVM guidelines in connection with COVID-19, the show can be seen 1 or 2 times as a day closer. The show can then also be used at business meetings or for special public events.

Aquanura is located in the Rowing Pond, thus replacing it, next to the Fata Morgana in the themed area Differ Realm.

Pardoes Promenade 08/11/2018 15h10

The magic fraction of a second that the water of the fountain on the Pardoes Promenade presents itself as a fairy-tale figure. You have to be lucky to be able to catch just that moment.

Efteling and the Corona Crisis

On March 11, 2020, the corona virus (COVID-19) was officially classified as a pandemic, a global epidemic. This led to the closure of Efteling from Saturday, March 14 to Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

Efteling appealed for government support through the Emergency Fund Bridging Employment scheme for 3,300 employees who are now at home, but who continue to be paid.

Based on a reservation system, the park was reopened with limited capacity from 20 May. The days before had already been tested with employees, residents of the reopened Bosrijk and subscription holders. The Efteling Hotel and holiday park Efteling Loonsche Land also opened again on that date.

The park has been modified in many ways; for example, plexiglass splash guards have been placed, the capacity of attractions is severely limited and shows such as Raveleijn are not running. In the Fairytale Forest a one-way route is indicated with signs and arrows on the pavement. [ Wikipedia ]

Aquanura 31/12/2024 17h17

One of the beacons of light (in Dutch "bakens van licht" along the Aquanura pond.

The Efteling has replaced the fire effects in the Aquanura fountain show with 8-metre high Beacons of Light: lanterns with video screens. They come to life during the new Efteling Symphonica show. Symbols and silhouettes appear, which must also be clearly visible in daylight. A separate video focuses solely on the lanterns.

According to the new story behind Aquanura, melodies bubble up in the so-called Lake of Fantasy, driven by a magical pendulum. The concept is connected to the new Efteling Grand Hotel and the surrounding entrance area Island of the Five Senses. These parts will open in 2025.

De Smaeckmaker 24/06/2020 12h46

This is one of the new catering outlets in the park. Opened in November 2019 and because it is a mobile point, no building permit needed to be issued.

De Smaeckmaker

De Smaeckmaker is a catering facility at the Hartenhof, near Symbolica. Variations on Unox sausage rolls are sold at this counter point of sale; it is a highly upgraded Unox sausage cart.

The sales counter was designed by Jeroen Verheij as a covered wagon from chef Polle (that of the nearby Kitchen), who, according to the story, accompanies the royal company on their travels, to provide them with the most delicious meals during the trip. Incidentally, this data around the covered wagon seems to have been newly devised for the catering point, because it has not previously emerged in expressions around Polle or the canon of Symbolica. On the back is a high stack of crockery and on the cart, and on a cord along the entire cart, hang all kinds of ladles - concepts that we already know from the pancake restaurant.

The interactive stage is a stage with some built-in effects that can be found at the western head of the 'water table', the plateau with trickster fountains at the end of the Pardoes Promenade, opposite the Pardoes statue. This way the stage is located right in front of the Symbolica façade, and is also called the Symbolica Photopoint.

In May 2018 the construction of this addition was started. The podium was completed at the end of July and this later addition to the thematic area around Symbolica was put into use without any ceremony.

New stickers in Efteling that appeared in various queues on 6 December should ensure that people behave better. The amusement park has recently been in the news several times because visitors turned out not to adhere to the corona rules. Now stickers have appeared in several queues asking to be "kind and tolerant".

In the waiting area os Symbolica you can almost hear the the compelling voice of O.J. Puntuel who urges guests to abide by the rules. Obey the rules, denk aan de regels!

mascaron Burgemeester Meineszlaan

A mascaron is an ornament in the form of a face used in architecture and the decorative arts. Originally intended to frighten evil spirits from entering a building, the compositional element became purely decorative, usually human in appearance, sometimes imaginative with elements from nature, such as leaves or animal heads. The most recent architectural styles to extensively employ it were Beaux Arts and Art Nouveau. In addition to architecture, mascarons are used in the other applied arts.
