"If you don't follow your dream, who will?"

Voltaire :

François-Marie Arouet (November 21, 1694 – May 30, 1778), better known by the pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, and philosopher known for his wit and his defense of civil liberties, including both freedom of religion and free trade.

Voltaire was a prolific writer and produced works in almost every literary form including plays, poetry, novels, essays, historical and scientific works, more than 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and pamphlets.

He was an outspoken supporter of social reform, despite strict censorship laws and harsh penalties for those who broke them. A satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize Catholic Church dogma and the French institutions of his day.

Voltaire was one of several Enlightenment figures (along with Montesquieu, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau) whose works and ideas influenced important thinkers of both the American and French Revolutions.

PS : je ne vous ferai pas l'affront à vous mes compatriotes de faire la traduction en français concernant Voltaire ;-)

I love this quote from Martin Luther King Jr! "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that!" One of many pieces of window art created for the Black Lives Matter protests in downtown Raleigh that occurred after the death of George Floyd. This can be found on South Salisbury Street in Raleigh, NC.

Today is Earth Day -- and the anniversary of the famous quote Walt Kelly used for a poster featuring his Pogo character that was used to publicize the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970: "WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US." "Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like."

"Princess" is how we tell little girls that they are special, precious. "Princess" is the wish that we could protect them from pain, that they would never know sorrow, that they will live happily ever after."

I could not resist capturing a photo of this guy's tatoo. Very original and nice artwork.

A wonderful quote from Winston Churchill "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few" Very original and nice artwork.

An early Happy St. Paddy's Day, everyone!

Photography is a major force in explaining man to man.

(Edward Steichen)

Photography helps people to see. (Berenice Abbott)

Photography is a small voice, at best, but sometimes one photograph, or a group of them, can lure our sense of awareness. (W. Eugene Smith)

Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man. (Edward Steichen)

There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough - there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph. (Robert Frank)

With photography a new language has been created. Now for the first time it is possible to express reality by reality. We can look at an impression as long as we wish, we can delve into it and, so to speak, renew past experiences at will.

(Ernst Haas)

Photography, alone of the arts, seems perfected to serve the desire humans have for a moment - this very moment - to stay.

(Sam Abell)

Living photography is positive in its approach, it sings a song of life - not death. (Berenice Abbott)

We are only beginning to learn what to say in a photograph. The world we live in is a succession of fleeting moments, any one of which might say something significant. (Alfred Eisenstaedt)

Photography to me is catching a moment which is passing, and which is true. (Jacques-Henri Lartigue)

Photography is the art of the split second. Speed, the fundamental condition of our present day activities, is its power. The photographer works fast within the second he has to see, to select and to act. The small camera is his ideal tool. Its art value is enhanced by qualities which have been variously described as journalistic, documentary, candid: it is the means of detecting and revealing the reality surrounding us. (Lisette Model)

Photography is an immediate reaction, drawing is a meditation. (Henri Cartier-Bresson)

Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still. (Dorothea Lange)

Photography can only represent the present. Once photographed, the subject becomes part of the past. (Berenice Abbott)

Photography deals exquisitely with appearances, but nothing is what it appears to be. (Duane Michals)

To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them. (Elliott Erwitt)

Photography is about finding out what can happen in the frame. When you put four edges around some facts, you change those facts. (Garry Winogrand)

Visual ideas combined with technology combined with personal interpretation equals photography. Each must hold it's own; if it doesn't, the thing collapses. (Arnold Newman)

Photography is a system of visual editing. At bottom, it is a matter of surrounding with a frame a portion of one's cone of vision, while standing in the right place at the right time. Like chess, or writing, it is a matter of choosing from among given possibilities. (John Szarkowski)

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.

(Aaron Siskind)

One advantage of the discovery of the Photographic Art will be, that it will enable us to introduce into our pictures a multitude of minute details which add to the truth and reality of the representation, but which no artist would take the trouble to faithfully copy from nature. (William Henry Fox Talbot)

Everything is a subject. Every subject has a rhythm. To feel it is the raison d'être. The photograph is a fixed moment of such a raison d'être, which lives on in itself. (Andre Kertesz)

La photographie aime l'objet banal et moi j'aime la vie des objets. (Josef Sudek)

I never liked photography. Not for the sake of photography. I like the object. I like the photographs when you hold them in your hand. (Robert Mapplethorpe)

Now very often events are set up for photographers... The weddings are orchestrated about the photographers taking the picture, because if it hasn't been photographed it doesn't really exist. (Elliott Erwitt)

Your photography is a record of your living, for anyone who really sees. (Paul Strand)

I wish more people felt that photography was an adventure the same as life itself and felt that their individual feelings were worth expressing. To me, that makes photography more exciting. (Harry Callahan)

Photography suits the temper of this age - of active bodies and minds. It is a perfect medium for one whose mind is teeming with ideas, imagery, for a prolific worker who would be slowed down by painting or sculpting, for one who sees quickly and acts decisively, accurately. (Edward Weston)

Photography is about an understanding of the world around us. It's a series of questions and no answers and that is just as it should be. I'm quite happy for it to be all the shades of grey and no black and white. I don't think that should be simplified. Simplification in life is totally wrong. (Nick Knight)

I use photography to explore the unknown – or rather my own unknown. Not to discover new things, but to rediscover the old. For I believe that a scene or image affects us to the extent that it reminds us of something we already know — setting off that gasping intake of breath and striking a deep and visceral plangency of reconciliation with some lost knowledge or ineffable truth. (Peter Merts)

At the root of creativity is an impulse to understand, to make sense of random and often unrelated details. For me, photography provides an intersection of time, space, light, and emotional stance. One needs to be still enough, observant enough, and aware enough to recognize the life of the materials, to be able to 'hear through the eyes'...

Photography is a medium, a language, through which I might come to experience directly, live more closely with, the interaction between myself and nature. (Paul Caponigro)

It might be more useful, if not necessarily true, to think of photography as a narrow, deep area between the novel and film. (Lewis Baltz)

Photography can never grow up if it imitates some other medium. It has to walk alone; it has to be itself. (Berenice Abbott)

Photography is still a very new medium and everything must be tried and dare... photography has no rules. It is not a sport. It is the result which counts, no matter how it is achieved. (Bill Brandt)

Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution. (Ansel Adams)

The mission of photography is to explain man to man and each to himself. And that is the most complicated thing on earth.

(Edward Steichen)

Famous quotes signs are “filler” for our library shelves that are too tall for students to reach comfortably

With the start of the New Year, I thought I would do a new series, so I am doing a series of images with quotes from famous people.

What better way to start with Marilyn, a woman who I think was very misunderstood & very lonely.

One of Oscar Wilde's most famous quotes is "I can resist everything except temptation." It comes from his 1892 play LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN. If you're a fan of Oscar (as I am), you probably know three other famous quotes from that play. You'll find all of them in this post on my www.ThisDayinQuotes.com site. -> www.thisdayinquotes.com/2011/02/cynic-is-man-who-knows-pr...

"you may say I'm a dreamer......"

On or near 16th St. I'lI get the exact location some other time.

Words to remember.

The complete quote is:

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

"Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one".

-Bruce Lee

To give your life is very easy, to suffer for somebody is not easy. - His Holiness Younus AlGohar

"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."

Tonight is the anniversary of the now famous line "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" -- as well as the lesser-known SNL catchphrase: "I would like...to feed your fingertips...to the wolverines" from the first skit on the first episode. 'False face must hide what the false heart doth know'.

Trying something new...

"Lose not yourself in a far off time, seize the moment that is thine."

I rarely do conceptual photography, but once a while I get an epiphany jumps over my little gray cells.

Underwood Universal typewriter (circa 1947).

I rescued this typewriter in a flea market, bought a new ribbon and it works! The question is: how can I summarize a past technology in one photo?

My brain vaguely remembers a familiar phrase that I had typed over and over again in a typing class, and there it is, after some Google search, the famous pangram is now replayed with the clacking punches of the typewriter bars.

Being a bad typist, I practiced the sentence on a regular printer paper. After that, I typed the final draft on a soft white, textured stock I originally bought as resume paper. Hey, no typo this time! :-) (typewriter backspace key doesn't delete the typo...). Tripod setup was tedious, so was the lighting, but after a few tries, I think I'll settle with this.

Each typewriter has its own "fingerprint." It looks like the "q" in this typewriter has a weak tail, and that is even when I applied some more force to the key. Letter "p" is another pinky finger key, but the letter is faint evenly.

Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac used a similar model (his was from 1930's). Harper Lee also used an Underwood (though I don't know the model she used).

Some old typewriters don't have the number "1" key, so I learned to substitute lower case "l" for it. That makes me feel I am typing "1337"....

One day I'll probably clean the typewriter and probably fix minor issues while at it. I wish I have the Champion model (which has tabulator), but hey, it's pretty cool to find this in a flea market at a price I can afford, in a condition much better than most found on eBay.

You cannot diminish hatred with weapons, you cannot wipe out hatred with hatred. You need love. - His Holiness Younus AlGohar

Quote by Carl Sandburg

Okay, so this is a less-creative way to come back into this project after a short break.

But oh well - I still like the picture anyway.

I'm done being sick - everyone in the house has officially gone through the same sickness so hopefully that's done for a while.

I'm a little less busy now that my trainer is back to work full swing.

And spring is coming!

I've still got a lot of work on that editing project for my mom.

Maybe I'll post the results when I'm done - probably the most editing I've ever done.

I'm working on a bday gift for Ally still - her 18th birthday was on the 2nd but her party is this saturday.

I'm going to come visit as many people as I can today.

There's tons of pictures from you all that I haven't seen!

Project Hands -- Picture Four!

Also part of the Peace, Hope, Joy Project!

Check out the before and after!

Also, view it on black

I hit 9,000 views today!

"To bring up a child in the way he should go, travel that way yourself once in a while."
