"What a magical place," she whispered in an awed voice. "I expect a unicorn or fairies to appear."
"What would the fairies be doing?" Shermont asked. "Waltzing with the butterflies," she answered before thinking.”

I took this in Fort Stevens State Park in Oregon.
Fairyland found in my own backyard. Who would have figured it was there...except the younger children who play there! (BC).

Fairies are invisible and inaudible like angels. But their magic sparkles in nature.

Feen sind unsichtbar und unhörbar wie Engel. Aber ihre Magie funkelt in der Natur.

The Bowen Falls, snowcapped mountains and deep valleys make Milford Sound appear like something out of a fairytale...
An Impala with some kind of fur disease in beautiful light in the magic forest of Mana Pools NP, Zimbabwe.
Photographing in Mana Pools is not so much about close ups of animals.
It is much more about showing animals in their natural environment, something which I like very much.
In today´s social media world it is very difficult to get recognized with these kind of storytelling pictures.
Everything has to be big in the frame for instagram and facebook.
All animals in Africa bite, but the safari bug is the worst.
I take pictures because I like it, not because I am good at it.

Today we are looking at some examples of infrared photography in different light conditions. The results can be quite dramatically different in texture and mood.
It helps to remember that all photography is capturing only reflected light. In the previous photo, "Colonial Gothic IR" we have a standard light situation. Brilliant rays of light stream over my shoulder and produce a bright and high contrast image. In "Fairyland IR" I am looking directly into the sun that is just about to go behind that hill at the entrance to the Cataract Gorge. I have found that this produces subtle images of moodiness. As you'll see here, this mood is enhanced by leaving them in the duotones captured by the IR filter on the sensor. I also find that these duotones with their sepia tones tend to look a lot like the early days of photography in the mid 19th century.
Because the reflected light (in this case in the infrared range between 720 nanometres and 1 millimetre wavelength) is not as intense, an impressionistic image is produced. So depending on the mood you want, it is possible to create dreamlike landscapes such as we see in "Fairyland IR".
I am taking these photos with my converted compact camera, the Panasonic DMC-TZ40. The original sensor was 18MPs, but I find that after conversion for infrared its sensitivity is more in the 6MP range. But this is still enough to create some nice smaller impressionistic prints.

Inspired by a Swedish book for children called “Småttingarnas svampbok” which I believe loosely translates as The Book of Mushroom Fairies. It was printed in 1910 and illustrated by Signe Aspelin.
