On July 4th 1776 thirteen American colonies declared their independence from the British Empire with a written Declaration of Independence. The fifty six signers declared that "we pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor." They were almost all successful men with families. Their signatures meant that the British would treat them as traitors, and they would lose everything if the bid for independence failed. Benjamin Franklin said" We must all hang together or we will certainly all hang separately."
