the facial disc is vinaceous brownish, with a prominent, orange-brown rim. The eyes are blackish-brown, and the bill cream-coloured.
The entire upperparts, including the wing-coverts, are dark brown with chocolate-brown patches and fine orange-buffish spots. The wings and tail are relatively short. The primaries, secondaries, and tail have a few narrow, darker bars.
The breast is golden-rufous, with blackish spots, becoming paler towards the belly, which is whitish.
Legs are feathered whitish-ochre to the base of the dark pinkish-grey toes. Claws are purple-grey.

The Nanday Parakeet (Aratinga nenday), often called the Nanday Conure or Black-hooded Parakeet, is a medium-small Neotropical parrot known for its striking appearance and boisterous personality.
Physical Appearance
Distinctive Hood:
Its most defining feature is a jet-black facial mask and beak.
Vibrant Plumage:
The body is primarily green, with a bluish-green upper chest and red feathers covering its thighs (often called "red stockings").
Wing and Tail Details:
It features black trailing flight feathers and a long tail tipped with blue.
Size:
They typically measure about 11–12 inches (27–30 cm) in length and weigh around 5 ounces (140 g).
Habitat and Distribution
Native Range:
Originally from central South America, specifically the Pantanal region spanning southeast Bolivia, southwest Brazil, central Paraguay, and northern Argentina.
Feral Populations:
Due to escaped or released pets, self-sustaining wild colonies have established themselves in several urban areas, most notably in Florida, California, Texas, and Israel.
Ecology:
In the wild, they frequent open savannahs, grasslands, and scrub forests.

Loud and Social:
They are highly gregarious, often traveling in noisy flocks of 10 to 20 birds. They are known for high-pitched, screeching calls that can be heard from a distance.
Intelligence:
Nandays are exceptionally smart and can learn to mimic human speech, perform tricks, and solve simple puzzles.
Playful Nature:
They are often described as "clowns" and have a unique habit of sleeping on their backs with their feet in the air, which can sometimes startle owners into thinking they are "playing dead".
Care and Lifespan
Diet:
In the wild, they eat seeds, fruit, palm nuts, berries, and flowers. As pets, they require a balanced diet of high-quality pellets, fresh vegetables, and fruits.
Lifespan:
They typically live 18 to 25 years, though some captive individuals have been reported to live up to 30–45 years with optimal care.
Space Requirements:
They are high-energy birds that need a large cage (at least 3 feet tall) and several hours of daily interaction and flight time outside the cage.

Known amongst Old Dalby test track train crew as the 'Grimston Facial', the most southerly of three vent shafts in Grimston Tunnel has a constant waterfall throughout the year. The water is a bit pungent and it's not a good idea to have your cab window open as you pass. In this view, 56098 has been posed for a photo with its headlight illuminating the cascading water. 8 February 2025.

Photos like these make me all smiley that I made a set called "entropy", photos like this one really feel at home with the sense of "entropy".
I wanted it to look milky, but catching the most agressivity and spurring it out, and milk is one of the last things we could associate with agressivity, and I love the irony here.

Yet another one table-top shot. This one is taken with Rodenstock Omegaron 50mm f3.5 enlarger lens. I find some resolution measurement for it from and from f4 it resolves 80 lpm from corner to corner. This one is taken wide open and cropped a little. I did another one on f11 and my old eyes do not see any difference in sharpness or contrast, just uglier bokeh.
This is taken from hand so any lack of sharpness you may found is my hand, not the lens :)
The Common Gallinule is quite beautiful and under-appreciated. It is anything but common in visual appearance. This one was found along a trail at the #1 attraction in Florida, Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland, Florida. They measure about 13 inches (33 cm) from beak-tip to tail-tip.
