Crimson-crested Woodpecker is the most widespread species of Campephilus. It occurs regularly from Panama south to northern Argentina, including across the Guianan Shield and throughout Amazonia. It is a very large, robust woodpecker with a large red crest. The male is distinguished from other co-occurring large woodpeckers by the combination of barred underparts and an entirely red head that lacks facial stripes, and has only a suggestion of a black-and-white "slash" below the eye. Females have a black front to the crest, and a very broad white malar stripe that continues into the white strip down the neck. This is a female - wild - at Pantanal - Brasil.

Tufted puffins are around 35 cm (15 in) in length with a similar wingspan and weigh about three quarters of a kilogram (1.6 lbs.). Birds from the western Pacific population are somewhat larger than those from the eastern Pacific, and male birds tend to be slightly larger than females.

They are mostly black with a white facial patch, and typical of other puffin species, feature a very thick bill which is mostly red with some yellow and occasionally green markings. Their most distinctive feature and namesake are the yellow tufts (Latin: cirri) that appear annually on birds of both sexes as the summer reproductive season approaches. Their feet become bright red and their face also becomes bright white in the summer. During the feeding season, the tufts moult off and the plumage, beak and legs lose much of their luster.

As among other alcids, the wings are relatively short, adapted for diving, underwater swimming and capturing prey rather than gliding, of which they are incapable. Consequently, they have thick, dark myoglobin-rich breast muscles adapted for a fast and aerobically strenuous wing-beat cadence, which they can nonetheless maintain for long periods of time.

Juvenile tufted puffins resemble winter adults, but with a grey-brown breast shading to white on the belly, and a shallow, yellowish-brown bill. – Wikipedia

His facial expression is a fact. The face is grotesquely disfigured. What does it mean? Why is it here, fixed to a gatepost of the Stables at Waddesdon Manor (Buckinghamshire)? All I can say is that Manor and Stables go back to the 1870s/80s and that this marble sculpture is of Italian origin, probably 18th century (and it has not yet been treated with fungicide as most of the other statues have been). The architecture here is generally playful, life-affirming perhaps - and now this! Is it a reminder of our fear, when examining the ground we think we are standing on, that there might be none? Muscovy Ducks (Cairina moschata) are one of the most distinct, ancient, and unusual waterfowl species on earth. Unlike almost all other domestic duck breeds, which are descended from the Mallard, Muscovies come from a completely separate lineage native to Central and South America.

Unique Physical Attributes

Facial Caruncles:

The most striking feature of a Muscovy is the bumpy, fleshy red skin around the eyes and bill. These function similarly to a turkey's wattle, protecting their faces and helping to dissipate heat in warm climates.

Tree-Perching Adaptations:

Muscovies are considered "perching ducks". They have uniquely strong claws on their webbed feet, allowing them to easily grip branches and roost high up in trees.

Massive Size Differences: T

hey exhibit extreme sexual dimorphism. Drakes (males) can weigh up to 15 pounds (6.8 kg) and are nearly double the size of hens (females), which typically stay around 6–8 pounds (2.7–3.6 kg).

Behavior & Environment

The "Quackless" Duck:

Muscovies are exceptionally quiet. They do not produce the classic loud quack associated with ducks. Instead, males make a low, breathy huffing or hissing noise, while females communicate with soft, melodic trills or coos.

Tail Wagging:

They display their emotions very visibly through body language. When they are happy, excited, or greeting a regular visitor, they will vigorously wag their large, flat tails like a dog.

Independent Mothers:

Female Muscovies have powerful maternal instincts and are known to be exceptional brooders. They will sit patiently through a 35-day incubation period (longer than the standard 28 days for most ducks) to hatch large clutches of 10 to 20 eggs.

Diet and Practical Value

Natural Pest Control:

Muscovies are prized by farmers and gardeners because they are voracious insect predators. They are highly effective at controlling populations of mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and grasshoppers.

Omnivorous Grazers:

Beyond bugs, they forage on grasses, seeds, roots, small fish, and reptiles. They generally spend less time swimming than other ducks, choosing to spend most of their day foraging on solid ground.

Culinary Use:

In culinary contexts, they are frequently referred to as Barbary ducks. Their meat is deeply valued for being exceptionally lean, dark red, and robustly flavored—often compared to beef or veal rather than traditional poultry

Eastern Chipmunk.

Between 8 1/2 to 11 3/4 inches in length. Reddish brown above with a white belly with 1 white stripe bordered by 2 black stripes on sides ending at the rump and 2 white stripes on back much thinner than side stripes. They have a dark center stripe down the back and pale facial stripes above and below the eyes. The tail is brown on the tip and edged with black. They also have prominent ears.

The Eastern Chipmunk's habitat includes open deciduous woodlands, forest edges, brushy areas, bushes and stone walls in cemeteries and around houses.

They range from southeastern Canada and to the northeastern United States from North Dakota in the west to the Carolinas and Virginia in the east.

I'm even more cautious with this one, but the lack of a pale eyering (as seen in the Cassin's) and the distinct light and dark facial markings, notched terminal edge of tail and bill shape make me feel pretty confident that this is a Purple Finch female.

A funny human-like facial impression created by a combination of bark texture, tree nodes covered with green moss and dusted with fresh snow did catch my attention. This Common ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) is around 20 years-old planted in or around 2000 when Primrose Hill Community Woodland was created. The bark changes its appearance from a light-grey smooth bark to a dark grey-brown wrinkle and cracked one as the tree grows older; like we humans do. Considering that Ash trees could live for several hundred years, this tree is really a baby. Primrose Hill Community Woodland. Bath, BANES, England, UK.

Photos like these make me all smiley that I made a set called "entropy", photos like this one really feel at home with the sense of "entropy".

I wanted it to look milky, but catching the most agressivity and spurring it out, and milk is one of the last things we could associate with agressivity, and I love the irony here.

I recently bought a field monitor to sit atop my camera to assist my aging eyes, knees and back in getting low perspective shots of small critters. In theory, the larger screen will help me as I track small birds and mammals like the prairie dog shown here. I say in theory because I did not get the chance to use it while we were in the Black Hills. These guys are very skittish (with good reason as I will post in the near future) and will typically run and slide back into their burrows when I even think about pointing a lens at one. Rather than get everything set up with the monitor, I decided to get out of the car to see if their skittishness would continue. Sure enough they all scattered - except for one. As you can tell from the facial expression and body language, it was not happy with me at all. Sorry bud!

My sincere thanks to all who spend the time to view, like or comment on my photos. It is much appreciated!

Had the first solitary bee of the year in our Staffordshire garden today!

The date, together with the overall appearance and black facial hairs, suggest that it's likely to be Gwynne's Mining Bee (Andrena bicolor). It's a male. They generally appear a little earlier than the females.
