One of the few species of diurnal owl, the great Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) has evolved with little pigmentation in its feathers. This not only helps to camouflage these birds of prey, but also provides more space for air to be held within its feathers, keeping them warm. These beautiful birds are often spotted near airfields or farmland, perched on telephone poles, as these landscapes are similar to the tundras of the north and allow them to hunt in the ambushing style that they prefer.
With Covid restrictions, it’s been a year since we last saw this little guy. He was only three months old at the time but we kept in touch via FaceTime and had to contend with some of the usual milestones virtually. I was wondering how he would manage the transition of seeing us in the flesh as opposed to on an iPad but he seems to be managing that just fine. It’s wonderful to see him wobbling along on his first steps independently.
#8 Avenue de l'Opéra. Honestly the hop on hop off bus is a blast. If in Paris for more than few day's it's the best to orient with the city and what area's to explore. As well being a peeping Tom through the beautifulstreets of Paris...👍
My son sent me the most special Christmas gift.
He didn't come this year due to covid, so we did Facetime Christmas morning to open some stocking stuffer gifts we'd sent each other.
But he'd told me I had to open a particular one by myself and follow the directions.
So very early Christmas morning I sat and opened it.
It was a festive little box and inside were 17 envelopes with cards.
One was the typical Hallmark mushy one b/c he said I know you like these, and signed it....yeah yeah yeah, With love, the people at Hallmark.
In the next he wrote how for years he'd been admiring my photos and some reasons why.
He's a videographer and even tho I hadn't taken up photography until after retirement and he'd left home, he thought he must have gotten his love of imagery and story telling from me.
So I was to proceed opening the envelopes by number. There were 15.
He'd gone into my archives and selected different ones.
He bought some cardstock, sized the images, cut the cardstock to fit and printed the images on the outisde.
Inside each one, he wrote his own narrations....what he saw in the technique, the visual, the feelings, the stories
I sat in the early dawn opening them one by one, reading his impressions, the last one bringing me to tears.
And I saw in them a part of my son I hadn't known before.
This box and its contents are a treasure chest to me, one I'll treasure always.

Looking at her from underneath and in front. She looks happy to be having her picture taken.

Thank you to Richard Orr for his assist in the identification.
This Tri-colored Heron never met a camera it didn't like. While feeding on Horsepen Bayou, each time it launched it headed my way.
Osprey with her head just above water on Armand Bayou. That's about how I've been feeling lately with work, projects, and a complete lack of reasonable paddling and shooting weather. Patience, patience.
