Last week I posted a photo from our first morning in Monument Valley of the East Mitten Butte with the sky looking like it was on fire. The sun had not yet risen and the clouds were an amazing shade of red. I wanted to post this photo of the East and West Mitten Buttes, as well as Merrick Butte, to show how quickly the light changes at sunrise. This photo shows the sun just peeking above the horizon, with the clouds taking on more of a blue color. This photo was taken a mere sixteen minutes after the previous one. That's right -- only sixteen minutes. That is why serious landscape photographers get up so early - well before dawn. That enables us to get Mother Nature's light show that is on display on many mornings.
This is not an unusual phenomenon, but rather what photographers expect (and sometimes) hope for. As I was experiencing this scene, I decided that I would add an artistic flair to the resulting photo by creating a sunburst. This is rather easy to achieve by merely stopping down the lens to a smaller aperture (in this case f/22).
If you're on facebook, you've probably received a friend request from someone from years back who you never particularly liked. If you're anything like me, you probably just accepted their request. If you're anything like the person in this picture, you're my new hero.

Sometimes the words don't flow. After posting almost 1,300 blog posts, I sometimes find it hard to come up with something new. So for the first time since I started blogging, I've got nothing to say that would enhance the beauty of this pristine lake along the Icefields Parkway. Don't worry. I am seldom at a loss for words for long.
ARC Amsterdam Lowlanders, the gay and straight friendly rugby team in the Netherlands, dropped their pants and lifted their shirts at impossible hours and places to bring you their 2016 Calendar: The Edge of Amsterdam. The proceeds of the calendar are used to get the entire team, including those who can't afford this, to Nashville, Tennessee in May 2016 to participate in Bingham Cup, the world tournament gay and inclusive rugby.
The calendar costs 15 euro excluding handling and shipment, and can be ordered through:

I have been to Acadia National Park a number of times and have thoroughly enjoyed everything that the only national park in the northeast has to offer. It wasn't until I started to co-host Jeff Clow's Maine Lighthouse, Lobster and Coast Tour that I explored outside the park. There are some great spots that many visitors don't realize are there without some driving around.
Acadia is actually on an island off of the coast of Maine. It is the largest island in the state, which consists of 3,165 other islands (yes, you read that right). Acadia was formed by donations of land by many philanthropists led by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in the early 1900's. While the park takes up a significant portion of the island, there are many small towns and homes that dot the landscape. On the southern part of the island near Seal Harbor is this "little" pond, aptly named Little Long Pond. It is privately owned, but the signs indicate that the public may use it as long as they respect the property. On the morning that I shot this, the water was as smooth as glass. The building on the right is actually a swimming hole for kids in the summer. The landscape in the background is actually the southern back of Acadia.
