Herbstlust

In about six weeks or so, I will be standing in this spot looking at one of the coolest landscapes in the southwest, namely Arches National Park. I never tire of the Moab area, having visited it more times than any other location in the west. The arches and rock formations of this great park are a magnet for me. Of all of the arches in the park that I have visited (there are around 4,000 of them, and, no, I have only seen a small fraction of them), Double Arch is my favorite. I love looking at this unique formation and wonder how the arches were formed in the sandstone. So, you must be asking yourself where the arches are in this photo. The answer is nowhere. When you climb up under the arches and look toward the parking lot, this is the view you see. It stands on its own, and I felt it deserved its own photo without its namesake arches.
When scouting the Palouse, one of the challenges is determining the best barns to shoot when we go back. During the trip, Jeff Clow and I looked at 88 different barns. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are painted, some are not. Some are in excellent condition while others are in total disrepair, including some that have fallen. Some are close to the road and others can only be shot from a distance. Sometimes it was easy to agree on whether the barn was photography friendly and other times we disagreed. While both of us will not claim to be barn experts, we certainly know a lot more about barns than we did when we started.
This particular barn and its accompanied shed has fallen on hard times during the years. There is hope for it though. The farmhouse that sits further down the street was being renovated as we drove by, so maybe the barn is to be next on the list. If it does, I don't know whether it will be a better or worse photography subject, but time will tell.

Evil doesn't cackle or wear a black cloak, and it isn't a dragon to fight. But the battle is very much real, and fairy tales whisper to our souls, "you can defeat it."
