As the sun creeps slowly below the horizon, long shadows fall across the meadows and the forest is rapidly cloaked in darkness. Shutter speeds fall well below those that anyone would normally use to capture nature's creatures, even those sitting still, let alone those moving at swift, silent speeds. I know the chances of capturing a usable frame are small, but my fascination with this majestic Great Horned Owl compels me to keep photographing. His bright golden eyes, remain so, despite the approaching obscurity of night. It is now easy to understand how the largest owl of North America is such a phenomenal nighttime hunter as he glides silently under the cloak of darkness. Nature evolves to fill many a niche and its solutions and creations are a pure fascination. #GreatHornedOwl

North America's largest and most common owl is the great horned owl. That being said, there is nothing common about these owlets. They are conveniently located for visibility and don't seem to mind the attention. They rarely even give park visitors a gander, and are much more concerned with the ducks in the creek, and vultures overhead. What was once a large tree cavity is now a little cramped for space, but they still seem to manage quite well. Mom stays somewhere nearby, leaving her owlets alone for most of the day. She will return to bring them food in the evening. So, Boat-tailed Grackles have dark eyes, right? Well, not exactly. Understanding "grackle speak" means understanding a little about the 3 species of grackles. There are three kinds of grackles: Common, Great-tailed, and Boat-tailed. The Common Grackle is, well, the most common. It lives east of the Rockies, is smaller than the other two kinds, and loves open agricultural areas, lawns, and avoids marshy areas. It is one of the birds that forms massive noisy flocks during the winter.

The Great-tailed Grackle has yellow eyes and lives in the southwest US and Mexico. Its range has expanded into some of the southeastern US also, where it overlaps with Boat-tailed Grackles.

Boat-tailed grackles live almost exclusively within about 20 to 30 miles of salt water, along the southeastern US and east coast. They have variable eye color. In the north they are yellow, but in the south, where they may overlap with the yellow eyed Great-tailed, their eyes are dark.

So, are you confused? Good! At least I'm not alone. Leave it to say that this is a male Boat-tailed Grackle taking to the air. The Great Horned Owl is one of the America's largest and most common owls. That being said, my first encounter with one of these regal bird was only a few years ago. This encounter was special, however. We first noted him sitting atop a telephone pole near the banks of Kissimmee Lake. We decided to play a few calls and within minutes he swooped down to a nearby fencepost very close to me. Having once had a barred owl answer my call, I wanted to see if I could elucidate a similar response. Using a similar cadence of three short hoots followed by two longer I was enthralled when he turned with his powerful legs and talons to face me directly and came closer. I hooted back and he, intrigued, came even closer. He leaned forward and belted out another series of hoots. Our exchange of hoots went on for what seemed like an eternity, with this magnificent bird eventually no more than about 10 feet from me, We stood toe to toe, our eyes locked while in conversation. What I would have given to know exactly what he was thinking. Eventually, he flew off. Despite his size and 4 foot wingspan his flight was as silent as the evening sun. The soft feathers of the Great Horned Owl endow them with the ability to fly without making much of any noise. It's a distinct advantage when chasing prey. The Great Horned Owl is one of the largest owls in North America. As one can imaging, a large owl probably has big feet, and this great raptor is no disappointment. The average foot span of a spread foot, talon to talon, is about 7 to 8 inches. More impressive than the size is its gripping power. Reports suggest that the Great Horned Owl has a gripping strength of at least 300 pounds per square inch. That's more power than the human hand! As the sun sets on a warm, winter day along the banks of Lake Kissimmee, evening's colors are revealed. A Great Horned Owl, one of North America's most notable and mysterious raptors, hoots away at its mate, hiding not far away in a tree. Its call is a haunting series of about 5 low, loud hoots, usually 2 short and two to three long. "Ho -ho hoo... hoo...hoo," is great horned owl-speak, and when attention is paid to the cadence of the call, this owl will frequently answer back. One transliteration is "You still up? Me too!" It's a transliteration that does justice to the rhythm and cadence of this great bird's call and who knows, perhaps it's a translation as well? #GreatHornedOwl

Ever wonder what it's like to be courted by a Great horned Owl? Well, this is it! He will likely approach, leaning forward as if in a gracious bow, with his tail folded upward and his billowy, white throat puffed outward for show. He will proceed to croon in his sexy low voice - two short hoots followed by two longer. Should you decide to accept his offer, be prepared for a long relationship since evidence of polygamous relationships between these great raptors have yet to be found. Though I was ever so humbled by his gracious advances, I was unable to accept his offer. And so he flew off in search of another. #GreatHorneOwls

Yellow-crowned Night Herons put on an awesome courtship display by stooping, pulling back their necks, and fanning their shoulder plumes and wings. This can be done repeatedly between making trips to find twigs and sticks for building their nests. Since I have not seen any signs for schools for sexy heron dancing, I assume that these behaviors are innate. Innate behavior has always been a concept that I have a hard time accepting. That's only because so much if not all of human behavior is learned. Broad wings and soft feathers contribute to the Great Horned Owl's ability to fly silently through the air. It is a characteristic shared by most owls and one that gives them the an edge over their prey during the hunt. It's hard to flee from something you can't see because of a lack of light and something you can't hear because of a lack of sound. Broad wings means that these birds can float on air without excessive flapping. The more flapping, the more noise that is created. Soft under wing feathers help to absorb the sounds that are made, cloaking the bird as it slices through the air. Blinded with silence prey frequently don't even know that they are about to be attacked by a great avian predator. #GreatHornedOwl

If you had not noticed, I have been fairly obsessed with owls lately. After a lifetime of little experience with them, the last few months have led to some very special encounters. These magnificent raptors, like the Great Horned Owl in this photo, have endowed humans with a particular fascination and eons of mysticism. Their ability to see in darkness, blend into their surroundings, and to fly almost silently through the night air has placed them on a pedestal above many other birds. A Forster's Tern takes a dive for a fish. It emerges from the water, and just like a faithful puppy, shake off any excess water. The only difference is that the tern does this while flying. I am always amazed at the ability of this bird to twist its body, like a contortionist in a circus, while still managing to stay aloft. No matter where I see them, terns manage to get my attention. Despite a certain predictability, they are a challenge to photograph. Burrowing owls live and nest in holes in the ground across North and South America. Most of the time they take over abandoned burrows from other smaller mammals like prairie dogs but they are capable of digging for themselves. But then why waste the time building when you can get the property cheap, and move right in. They eat a variety of small animals and insects. Despite their small size they have proportionately long legs. An inquisitive red fox stares down at me on Island Beach State Park. By now mated pairs are busy tending to their kits that have left the dens they spent the better part of a month in. Larger numbers of visitors to the park have driven many of the foxes further into the brush. A few still wander the edges of the street, hoping to catch a visitor that will leave them a treat. Kits will remain with their parents until fall when they will begin to disperse. Yellow-crowned Night Herons prove that we've been doing it all wrong. Bouquets of flowers, jewelry, and boxes of candy are not the best way to win a heart. All it takes is the right stick. Not just any stick, but a stick not so daintily plucked from a surrounding tree. A stick off the ground won't do! It's too dry and too brittle. With tenderness he gently hands her the vital pieces of arbor that will caress the joy of their union. She will spend the next few minutes arranging this addition to her liking. When she is finished, he will fly off again to fetch another, until the nest is complete. I'm looking forward to photographing this year's brood of baby shorebirds. Hopefully, I will find some locally. A nesting pair of Oystercatchers at Barnegat Light have been unsuccessful year after year. Predators seem to be scavenging the eggs and the birds have not been able to protect them. Last weekend was disappointing, without a shorebird in sight, after families continued to bring their dogs onto the beach despite signs to the contrary. Through neglect, greed, and the need for advancement, we have pushed so many of these birds into small corridors that they must use to reproduce. If we don't give them some space we make that possibility even smaller. Respect the signs along your public beaches. They are there for a reason. A Yellow-crowned Night Heron steps out. It is well prepared and preened to perfection. Donned in its Sunday best, every feather is in place. Who knows who will be out and about. You never know when you'll be seen, and without doubt the paparazzi will be present. It will be a day of shopping at the rookery! Everyone there will be looking for the best stick. Supplies are limited, and the best sticks are a premium. Juniper is all the rave, and everyone wants the newest version 6.2. There is rumor that there have been purposeful delays in deliver to drive up costs. Nonetheless, herons will be stepping out in perfectly matched pairs. Great horned owls are nocturnal, and these owlets are no exception. They spend most of their day sleeping, waking about every 30 minutes or so, either together or in shifts. They take a short gander at the world around them and then retreat back into the nest to sleep. They will grow into fierce predators, able to capture and consume other raptors like, osprey, peregrines, and hawks. Most of their diet consists of a variety of 4 legged creatures, like rabbits, skunks, and perhaps even a stray cat or two. North America's largest heron floats through a veil of fog at the Florida Everglades National Park. With a wingspan of about 6 feet, it's a formidable sight when flying nearby, as this bird did. Although this bird is flying a short distance with its neck outstretched, blue herons have specially shaped vertebra that allow them to curl their necks into an "S" shape. This provides them with a more aerodynamic profile for flying long distances and is very useful for striking a prey when they hunt. Despite their formidable size, blue herons only weigh about 5 or 6 pounds. Frankly, yellow-crowned night herons don't speak very softly, at all, but they do tend to carry big sticks. They typically nest in groups that we call rookeries. Both males and females help to build nests. Males do the majority of stick finding and providing, while the female tends to contribute the most toward the actual building process. They will use a nest over gain, from year to year. These nests can be up to 4 feet across. That's quite a lot of sticks!

The title is a bit obtuse, but is derived from the quote by President Theodore Roosevelt in a letter he wrote in August of 1900. He wrote, "Speak softly and carry a big stick, and you will go far." One of my favorite raptors glares at me from the nest, though I doubt it does so with any adoration. Osprey are fairly protective of their nests. Without seeing both birds in a mated pair it can be difficult to distinguish between male and female. When they are both present, the female is generally larger, and the brownish "necklace" across her white chest is generally darker and more pronounced than in the male. There is a good deal of crossover, so identifying the sex of any single bird can be difficult. That being said, males are generally the first to arrive at nesting sites. They will begin their nest building before the female arrives, trying to make sure they've created a happy place to please their mate. While photographing herons at the rookery near Ocean City last weekend the tiniest of birds made themselves known. The constant chatter and motion of a pair of Blue-grey Gnatcatchers caught my attention, and despite distance and small size I had to get a better look. They combed nearby and distant branches, flicking their white edged tails from side to side, hopping and hovering, all in an attempt to scare insects hiding on the branches, to scoop them up as a tasty meal. I was rather fond of the black V-shaped visor that these birds apparently don during the spring and summer season. As the sun rose over the tree tops along Route 206 I headed southward toward Hammonton, anticipating a beautiful morning shoot at the rookery in Ocean City. From the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of this Red-tailed Hawk perched along the side of the road, basking in the sun's warm glow. I had to stop to take a few photos, of course. Although Red-tailed Hawks are fairly common, it is rare to see one willing to sit for more than a few seconds. True to form, he flew off a few seconds after I arrived to find another peaceful sky, free from human intrusion. While out on a walk with my daughters yesterday afternoon in Smithville Park, in Easthampton, I spotted a bird that is a first for me. True to its colors, the Baltimore Oriole is more often heard than seen. They feed high up in tree canopies, where they search for insects, nectar, and fruit. I waited at for some time to be able to attain a closer photo but he really was not interested in a portrait. He did manage to glimpse at me, once or twice, and so I took some photos at the limits of my resolution.
