I had the pleasure of having a ride on this vehicle on route 221 between Bugibba and Ċirkewwa. Riding on the rear of the bus is certainly an experience along narrow and steep Maltese roads with speedy drivers. Also, this particular vehicle needed some WD40 or something on the bendy part!. That was my only bus ride for my whole week as I was there on a university trip. I would love to go again to have a go on the whole network.
Mercedes-Benz Citaro bendy-bus.
New to Arriva London in November 2005, as MA151 (BX55FXR). In July 2011, Arriva took over bus services in Malta, and brought over many of these Citaros.
Route 221 operates between Ċirkewwa (for the ferry to Gozo) and Buġibba, via Mellieħa and Xemxija. From my observations, it seemed to be mostly operated by King Long vehicles.
Edwards operated National Express Caetano Levante FJ12 FXR seen in Swansea bus station while operating route 201 to Swansea
Route: 226 to Thurnscoe
Operator: Stagecoach Yorkshire
Depot: Rawmarsh
Fleet Number: 28675
Reg: YN62 FXR
Chassis: Scania K230UB
Body: Alexander Dennis Enviro 300
Livery: Local
New to: Stagecoach Yorkshire - 10/2012
Engine (truck): Hercules HXE 935 cu. in. six cylinder gas
Transmission: Walter 6 speed
Engine (Roto-Wing): Waukesha 145-GZ 779 cu. in. six cylinder gas
A little farther down the same road as the previous two pictures, the Roto-Wing is really digging into the bank here. Note the hard lean with the driver and wing man applying all their skills to keep from getting it stuck. The Roto-Wing was very heavy so the wing man had to be very subtle with the levers controlling the raising and lowering as it could easily tip the truck if dropped hard into a bank.
As the Roto-Wing was prone to break U-joints on the drive shaft according former driver Henry Kampf, this unit was later (1970's era) converted to hydraulic pump drive by county mechanic Jimmy Jansen which greatly improved its reliability. Again, this truck survived in the county fleet until 1995.
Once again, another Walter is cleaning up in the background.
