The brutalist building was designed by Gerd Hänska and is known for its jutting blue tubes and triangular windows, as well its dubious reputation – having been used as an animal testing lab. Many have commented on its austere exterior, which is reminiscent of a grounded spaceship or submarine and is inspired by futurism and Cold War militarism.

It took a decade to construct the lab, which cost around 126 million Deutschmarks – wildly exceeding its original budget of 4 million. Its demolition has been on the cards for the last 10 years, but there is an ongoing campaign to save the building.

Il Futurismo è stato un movimento letterario, culturale, artistico e musicale italiano dell'inizio del XX secolo, nonché la prima avanguardia europea. Ebbe influenza su movimenti affini che si svilupparono in altri paesi d'Europa, in Russia, Francia, negli Stati Uniti d'America e in Asia. I futuristi esplorarono ogni forma di espressione, dalla pittura alla scultura, alla letteratura (poesia e teatro), la musica, l'architettura, la danza, la fotografia, il cinema e persino la gastronomia. La denominazione del movimento si deve al poeta italiano Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

Nelle opere futuriste è quasi sempre costante la ricerca del dinamismo; cioè il soggetto non appare mai fermo, ma in movimento: ad esempio, per loro un cavallo in movimento non ha quattro gambe, ne ha venti. Così la simultaneità della visione diventa il tratto principale dei quadri futuristi; lo spettatore non guarda passivamente l'oggetto statico, ma ne è come avvolto, testimone di un'azione rappresentata durante il suo svolgimento.

Futurism was an Italian literary, cultural, artistic and musical movement of the early 20th century, as well as the first European avant-garde. It had influence on related movements that developed in other countries of Europe, Russia, France, the United States of America and Asia. The futurists explored every form of expression, from painting to sculpture, to literature (poetry and theater), music, architecture, dance, photography, cinema and even gastronomy. The movement was named after the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

In futurist works the search for dynamism is almost always constant; that is, the subject never appears to be stationary, but in movement: for example, for them a moving horse does not have four legs, it has twenty. Thus the simultaneity of vision becomes the main feature of futurist paintings; the spectator does not passively look at the static object, but is wrapped in it, witnessing an action represented during its development.
