The impressive remains of Furness Abbey founded by Stephen, later King of England, includies much of the east end and west tower of the church, the ornately decorated chapter house and the cloister buildings.
Founded almost 900 years ago, Furness Abbey was once the largest and wealthiest monastery in north-west England. A place of prayer, piety and pilgrimage, the abbey was also a major landowner, its abbot occupying an important place in the administration of the region.
English Heritage is carrying out emergency conservation work to stop the ruined Abbey church sinking into the soft ground. This follows earlier routine inspections which revealed serious cracks in the walls. Medieval masons used large pieces of oak in the foundations and after 500 years, this timber is now gradually giving way.
While excavating the grave of a prosperous medieval abbot, a hoard of medieval treasures was discovered at Furness Abbey. This discovery unearthed the first crozier (a staff with a crook on top) to be excavated in Britain in over 50 years and an impressive gemstone ring was also found.
Mal wieder schwarz und weiss...
Also heute gibt es so richtig schöne Farbgebungen und wir können die mit unseren Fotoapparaten auch alle wiedergeben. Gott sei Dank gibt es noch viele fotobegeisterte Menschen, die auch gerne schwarz-weiss Bilder machen. Ich bin bereits als Kind zur Fotografie gekommen, weil mein Vater leidenschaftlich fotografiert hat. Jeder Geburtstag und jedes Familienereignis musste fotografisch dokumentiert werden. Aber... ich habe aus dieser Zeit viel gelernt.
Damals machte mein Vater nur schwarz-weiss Papierbilder. Dafür war die Agfa Isolette III 6x6 Negativformat ein tolles Werkzeug. Um Geld zu sparen, war es zu der Zeit oft üblich, einfach "nur" Kontaktabzüge zu machen. Die entwickelten Papierbilder waren dann im Format 6x6cm.
Ich möchte nur betonen, dass die B&W Fotografie nie aufgegeben wurde.... Gott sei Dank

Ich hatte mir für das Jahr 2022 einige Fototouren zur Vogelfluglinie vorgenommen, bevor diese Ende August nördlich Neustadt gekappt wurde. Am Ende wurden es nur drei Ausflüge dorthin, der letzte bereits am 08.05..
Früh Morgens startete ich mit dem Auto in Nienburg und nach dem aufgabeln eines Kumpels in Hamburg, steuerten wir das nördliche Ostholstein an.
Erste Anlaufstelle für den morgendlichen Schieber-IC sollte der Blick aufs "Riesen-Nasenspray" nahe Sütel werden. Neben den weitläufigen Rapsfeldern erfreute uns auch ein bisschen Rapsblüte am Wegesrande, die sogleich zur Vordergrundgestaltung herhalten musste.
Die Wolkensituation machte es spannend, doch der IC 2414 Hamburg-Langenfelde Bbf - Fehmarn-Burg mit dem schiebenden "Pidder Lüng" klappte dann doch noch sehr erfreulich und alsbald verschwanden dann auch die Wolken und dem perfekten Fototag stand nichts mehr im Wege.
Bildmanipulation: Ein ins ÜS ragender Busch wurde digital gefällt.

The Psychedelic Furs were a New Wave band in the early 80's, their name was the first that popped into my head when having to do an image that represented a music band.
They were one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, to later touching on new wave and hard rock.
The band had several hits in their early career, including Heaven and Dumb Waiters. In 1986, filmmaker John Hughes used their song "Pretty in Pink" for his film of the same name.
Für den sonnigen 09.10.2022 hatte ich lange keine Idee, ob und wenn ja wie ich den Sonntag hobbymäßig nutzte. Am Ende entschied ich mich fürs Ausschlafen und nach der Niedersachsenwahl für einen entspannten Kurztrip ins Harzvorland, ehe der Nachmittag an der bekannten Fotokurve in Burgstemmen endete.
Neben ein paar Güterzügen, sollten noch zwei Autozüge mit SEL 181ern kommen. Für den ersten sah es Anfangs sehr gut aus, durch ständige Standzeiten sollte es aber nochmal knapp werden. Der 2. Zug war dann schon sicher im dunkeln.
Glücklicherweise legte die 181 213 mit dem sonntäglichen Autozug nach Worms einen zahn zu und rauschte somit noch vor Sonnenuntergang an einigen Fotografen in Burgstemmen vorbei. Am Haken hatte sie den DGS 95463 Bremerhaven Imsumer Deich - Worms Gbf. Das war doch mal ein gelungener Tagesabschluss!
Bildmanipulation: Ein Pfosten, sowie etwas Gestrüpp aus dem Fahrwerk der Lok wurden entfernt.

Sadly, Britain’s oldest working standard gauge locomotive had a technical problem on 28th May 2023 and had to sit in the sidings during Pontypool & Blaenavon heritage railway’s Coal Train Weekend. The immaculately restored Furness Railway No. 20 was built in 1863 by Sharp Stewart & Co. of Manchester as one of a batch of eight 0-4-0 tender locomotives supplied between 1863 and 1866.
