The Great Big Useless Contraption is a lego Rube Goldberg machine of sorts. Its nonpurpose in life is to ferry little balls around a meandering track.

This project was obviously inspired by the awesome GBC (great ball contraption) although the name was concieved before I knew what GBC was (odd, hey :P )

This MOC is built on a wooden base for transportation. All the modules are taped down.

Features:

NXT ball counter

Dual wheel lift

Ball cannon (watch the video ;) )

Double screw

Tilt ramp

2 caterpillar track lifts

2 flip flops

The Wave (watch the video)

and assorted ramps and fandangles.

If one wants to see the first two (note: these are from almost 3 years ago when I was 11 and 12 years old respectively so I probably displayed gross photography skills and terrible spelling/grammar/whatever)

One's skill can certainly improve in 3 years, eh? The most interesting thing about these is that they had no grasp of colour scheme whatsoever :P

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, Essex here are the details of the project.

The Colourful Garden in South Woodford, Essex

BRIEF:

This space was a fairly blank canvas, containing few features other than a lawn, an old log-roll raised bed, and a large, well constructed garden shed. The area adjoining the house had recently been block paved, and this was to be integrated into the design. The client wanted a bold and vibrant garden that functioned on several levels - including a football pitch for their children and a sociable area for the adults.

SOLUTION:

To accommodate the client’s love of colour, and in keeping with the style of the interior of the house, the design was based around blocks of vivid orange or blue, taking inspiration from the abstract artist, Mondrian. The existing shed and fruit tree were removed to allow the construction of main social area of the space.

This comprised an area of decking bordered on two sides by a long, L-shaped fixed bench seat, backed by lush planting in raised rendered block beds to create a relaxing, social focus to the space. Provision for al fresco dining was given with the inclusion of a large decking table, with a moveable decked box on casters providing seating for the client’s children.

The block paving directly outside the house was integrated into the rest of the garden with the addition of several rendered block planters of various heights and dimensions. These were painted either orange or blue on different surfaces and planted with tall architectural specimens or low ground covering plants to give variation to the heights and perspective at play in the space.

A high rendered block bed at the bottom of the garden provides a dramatic frame to space, and also serves as a sturdy goal for impromptu football matches. A further low raised bed running down the left hand side of the garden ties the back of the space into the main area. This bed terminates in a higher raised bed to the left of the decked area, which acts a frame for

a stunning stainless steel water wall.

Planting in the space is strong and architectural, and chosen for year round interest with the inclusion of bamboo, spiky cordylines, tall grasses, and orange and blue flowering plants such as hosta and crocosmia tying the planting into the

overall colour scheme.

A dramatic yet functional lighting scheme adds the finishing touches to the space. Brick lighting illuminates the lawn area,

with strong spotlights providing an overall wash to the garden while picking out selected specimen plants in the beds. Blue LED deck lights cuff the edge of the decking, giving an outline to the central entertaining area. Finally, three blue neon stick lights placed in the planters on the block paving provide an unusual, eye-catching, entrance to the space.

TESTIMONIAL:

"We would like to take this opportunity in thanking the whole team. From the very initial consultation with Kat, we managed to work together in the overall design of the garden. You have so many great and inspirational ideas we wish we had more space in our garden to use more of them!!! Then from the drawing to the actual implementation of the garden, taking on a

whole new identity. The space you provided is both great for the children and most importantly for the adult entertaining.

The general feedback from our friends and neighbours has been great. The whole team worked so hard through, sunshine, rain and a lot of wind all mixed together on some days. You managed to stick through it all and deliver us more than what we expected. We would like to thank you all and wish you all the very best of luck in the future."

This is using Power Functions Pulse Width Modulated output to control Lego 9 Volt Trains on two Track Circuits with a 9 Volt Train controller.

You need two 9 Volt to PF converter cables to achive this.

Also you need a modded connector with Diodes.

With this you get better Train Control and a lot more pulling power due to the Pulse Width Modulated output from the PF IR Reciever as against the varriable voltage output of the 9 Volt Controller.

Received bad news this passed Wednesday, the cancer is back! We don't know where but the blood cancer markers were elevated! My oncologist send me for a bunch of test and CT Scans and Ultrasounds, repeating the blood test tomorrow just to make sure it wasn't a false positive and then we will be discussing the plan of action. Most likely will involve the dreaded chemo. Damn it!

The PF lights stick into the trans clear headlight bricks and the wires run on each side of the engineer. Finally the reason for those blue handles in the very beginning is revealed - they make it MUCH easier to mount the center brick of the lights to the base of the train without disassembling more of the walls.

I've chosen a number of photographs on various themes that reflect aspects of my life and concerns. As yet I've not started to put together galleries on photographs of architecture and work closely related to my own photography. I hope you will enjoy some of these sets, there are a wide range of styles and techniques. I was sorry not to include some photographs I liked because their gallery function was not available.

W Hoboken

225 River Street

Hoboken, New Jersey

The W's 2nd floor pre-function area.

-----------------------

The W Hoboken Hotel & Residences opened in the spring of 2009. The 26 story condo-hotel has 225 hotel rooms and 40 condominium residences. The $150 million hotel sits on the Hudson riverfront in Hoboken, New Jersey - named after the Old Dutch word Hoebuck, meaning high bluff) - facing mid-town Manhattan. This type of condo-hotel property is generally found in splashy cities such as Miami or Hong Kong. It took Hoboken talent, the Applied Development Company based in Hoboken, to find the wherewithal to develop such an ambitious and hip hotel for Hoboken.

Applied Development Company has extensive ownership and management experience in Hoboken’s apartment market, having built many residential and mix use projects. The principals of Applied Development Company (other legal entities are 225 River Street LLC and Ironstate Development Co.) are David and Michael Barry. Their father Walter and older brother Joseph started Applied Development in 1970 and helped develop Hoboken's gritty riverside into a desired residential area teeming with restaurants, shops and young professionals. Walter has passed the business to two younger sons, David and Michael. In 2004 Joseph Barry was sentenced to two years in federal prison for making kickbacks to county executives.

Applied recently completed the Pier Village, a mix use project in Long Branch, NJ which includes a boutique 40-room hotel - The Bungalow. The Bungalow is a very hip, yet luxury hotel which town planners say revitalized the Jersey Shore town of Long Branch. Also, the Barry brothers are in the early development stage for a W Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco.

The architect was Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects - a NYC firm which also designed the W New York - Downtown Hotel and Residential Condominiums located next to the World Trade Center Memorial Site and The Setai Fifth Avenue in NYC, a 57-story hotel and residential tower containing 157 hotel rooms, 57 hotel apartments.

The W Hoboken was designed with a wedge-shaped tower - this to maximize the number of hotel rooms that would have Manhattan/Hudson River views. The 225 hotel rooms are located in the 14-story mid-section of the tower with the upper 9 floors containing the 40 condominium residences.

It was reported that the 40 condos were sold out quickly and at record prices for Hoboken. According to realdeal.com the average condo price in the building was $1,075 per square foot or upwards of $2 million for a 1,900 sq. ft. two-bedroom.

There were early opponents to the construction of the hotel. In 2004 the Hoboken City Council approved the hotel's construction by a narrow vote of 5-4. Many felt the 26-story glass tower did not fit into the fabric of what Hoboken's waterfront looks like. The W Hoboken, a metal and glass building, contrasts sharply with the existing mid-rise, masonry buildings on the river front.

Barry Sternlicht, the founder of Starwood Hotels, is credited with the creation of W Hotels. Following Starwood’s acquisition of Westin Hotels in 1994 he determined there was a need for a "smaller but urban" Westin Brand - therefore the name W Hotel. Starwood's first W Hotel opened in 1998 with the W New York, a multi-million dollar conversion of the Doral Inn hotel at 541 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

As stated in the hotel's opening press release - "the W Hoboken provides a contemporary cool environment for both international jetsetters and local loyalists".

The first two floors of the building houses The Chandelier Room lounge and Zylo Steakhouse, W's Living Room with 40 foot ceilings, a Bliss spa, fitness facility, a wood-paneled multi-purpose ballroom, and multiple conference rooms.

The hotel's all-day dining room is Zylo. The restaurant is operated by Cornerstone Restaurant Group (operators of Michael Jordan-brand restaurants). The opening chef was Troy Unruh. In May 2011 Seadon Shouse was appointed Executive Chef. Shouse previously was the Sous Chef with Morgan’s Hotel Group at the Hudson Hotel.

The hotel's 2nd floor indoor/outdoor cocktail lounge is the Chandelier Room. W Hoboken owners Michael and David Barry contracted with the EMM Group’s Eugene Remm, Mark Birnbaum and Michael Hirtenstein to conceptualize and operate the destination, high-energy bar. EMM is well-known for the success of their Manhattan club - Tenjune.

Anna MacDiarmid is the general manager for the W Hotel in Hoboken. She is quoted saying the focus of the hotel is on personalized service and “whatever a guest wants whenever they want it as long as it is legal.”

W Hoboken appointed Katie Donald to Director of Sales and Marketing in January 2012. She previously served as the Director of Sales and Marketing for Starwood at The Westin Auckland in her native New Zealand.

Then the shit starts to hit the fan !

It was in August 2013 during Les Houches Quantum Optics and Nanophotonics summer school. In a sunny morning. Jean-Jacques Greffet was quietly introducing near-field microscopy, talking about electrostatic and evanescent waves (yes they exist, for real) when suddenly, the Green's function showed up as expected in the calculation of the electric field. At that point I could feel a pain in my stomach and I started to sweat.
