The GreenTouch Consortium demonstrated Bi-PON, a breakthrough in optical networking technology and the second major milestone toward its objective of increasing network efficiency by a factor of 1000. When deployed in FTTH networks, it will enable a power reduction of 30 times over current technologies while improving performance and reducing cost. The pen shows where current technology is and the meter shows how much energy consumption Bi-PON uses. With Bi-PON instead of the current optical technology in use, the impact on the carbon footprint is that of taking half a million cars from the roads.

A Powered Fiber Cable System incorporates DC power and fiber-based Ethernet connectivity in one cable – it’s everything a customer needs to be able to install Power over Ethernet (PoE) equipment at distances much longer than the PoE standard allows, without having to do any calculations or design work. The Powered Fiber Cable System extends power to a device (Wi-Fi access point, IP camera, or small cell, for example) at a distance of up to two miles. The Powered Fiber Cable System incorporates two innovations: one is a new hybrid cable that combines power (copper) and data connectivity (fiber) in one cable housing, and the other is the use of a small device used with that cable, called the PoE Extender.
Hybrid power/fiber cables have been on the market for a few years, but they are bulky, expensive to terminate, and they require experts to deploy. CommScope’s Powered Fiber Cable System uses cable that is like an FTTH drop cable, and can be accessed in 30 seconds by standard networking technicians without special tools.
The PoE Extender tackles other deployment issues. CommScope engineers incorporated something new in the circuit world – cheap and highly efficient DC-to-DC electrical conversion to automatically eliminate the voltage drop in the system. The Powered Fiber Cable System automatically manages the electrical voltage drop, eliminating the need for electrical calculations. This system innovation makes the cable less expensive and faster to deploy, and the electronic component innovation eliminates design headaches for the customer.
All the hard work has paid off, the eco housing is now gigabit, and work continues to connect all the farms along the way now the village hub is live to feed them, and pay them back for letting the duct through.

Greg Gianforte (MT-AL) to announce Southern Montana Telephone Company (SMT) will use a $3.3 million ReConnect Program grant to construct a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Beaverhead County. The 1,688-square-mile service area includes 109 households, 26 farms and ranches, seven businesses and the Grant Fire Station. Improved broadband access in Beaverhead County will make a significant impact on agricultural and small businesses. Farmers and ranchers will be able to monitor their operations in real time and use high-speed internet to buy, sell or trade livestock.
