AFT 1 was attempting to make its way to Navy Pier along with the rest of the train. After a couple derailments it was decided to not take the engine past this point. The engine was re-railed and sent west, possibly to EMD while the train was on display. Photo was taken on 7-28-75 by Lee Hastman.

Those cubicle-shaped rooms in those buildings look like books and the whole building looks like a bookshelf. Those rooms representing knowledge. Wings are the focal point in this picture because that is the end result, which is freedom. And with that freedom that person holds endless opportunities (sky is the limit).
The Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan, as seen from Jersey City one bitterly cold night in January. You'd think a touch-screen camera would be easier to work with frozen fingers than a regular camera. Wrong!

Think about the strangeness of today's situation. Thirty, forty years ago, we were still debating about what the future will be: communist, fascist, capitalist, whatever. Today, nobody even debates these issues. We all silently accept global capitalism is here to stay. On the other hand, we are obsessed with cosmic catastrophes: the whole life on earth disintegrating, because of some virus, because of an asteroid hitting the earth, and so on. So the paradox is, that it's much easier to imagine the end of all life on earth than a much more modest radical change in capitalism.

I was asked to photograph our "church in the park" last Sunday. I find it quite entertaining to watch the little ones during the service as they express their freedom to worship as they please... and this little guy was having a ball flinging his slinky in the air and watching who it landed on... quite cute!!
HBW!!!
Freedom will not come
Today, this year
Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.
I have as much right
As the other fellow has
To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.
I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I’m dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow’s bread.
Freedom
Is a strong seed
Planted
In a great need.
I live here, too.
I want my freedom
Just as you.
— Langston Hughes
After checking the sun orientation, sunset and low tide times, I found a place on the coast when all of these were happening together. I wanted low tide on a long flat beach, so that the sand would create lots of reflections.
Once there, I pre-broke wooden planks, nailed them accordingly on a structure, which I buried in the sand. Then I just waited for the sun, did some jumps, and here it is.
An analogue photo which I made some years ago reworked digitally!

One of these days, I'm going to publish a book of all the pictures I did not take. It is going to be a huge hit. - René Burri - New York Times, May 20 2004

* The usual community of cormorants can be seen here roosting on their utility cable above the lake... they no a good thing when they see it (sunset) and they don't have to pay for lodging either!
