Ingredients here: Grape vine tendril, daisy-like flower, water droplets and a weevil!

This vine tendril was wrapped around the wire of a tomato cage, and it got me thinking: what if I can get a droplet to fill in the center of the spiral and refract? In combination with droplets on the outside, all carefully placed with a hypodermic needle, this curved magical wand began to take form. I knew I needed an actor for this shot, and I had spotted some Green Immigrant Leaf Weevils in our front gardens recently (and had used for other images too). Not hard to track one of these down, and into the studio we go.

This is lit with a NiteCore SRT7 LED flashlight (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1336259-REG/nitecore_srt7g... ) which is bright enough for very fast shutter speeds at close range, but it was also needed for the “secret weapon” of this image: The Lumix S1R “high resolution” mode which requires continuous lights. This is a heavy crop from a 187MP image taken with the Lumix S 24-105mm F/4 kit lens. No close-up filters, no extension tubes, and we’re firmly into the macro universe. It’s a focus stack of five images taken as quickly as possible – there is a few second delay between images as the camera builds the high resolution image from 8 shots taken in rapid succession. Really liking that feature on the S1R (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1455068-REG/panasonic_dc_s... ), but wait a minute… how did the weevil stay still?!

It’s fairly hot and dry today (30C / 86F), so I shouldn’t be surprised when I lead this weevil up the grape vine. When it encountered water, it stopped for a drink! I saw that it wasn’t moving, but the snout was stuck into a droplet… so time to act fast. If he (or she?) is sitting still, maybe I could balance another droplet on its head? Oh what the heck, why not try! Also, with little movement between frames this is when I had the idea to utilize the high-res mode on the S1R. When focus stacking the shot, there was some movement from the weevil – mostly the antennae – that required some manual corrections.

The flower in the background is a hardy osteospermum, my best guess is “Purple Mountain” Sun Daisy. These flowers are tricky, because their colour is so vibrantly intense that a camera might often record it a little off. I had the opportunity to test out the new xrite ColorChecker Classic Nano for this shot (www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1486402-REG/x_rite_msccext... ) which is a camera calibration chart of Lilliputian dimensions. Worked like a charm, so no more need to fiddle with a million sliders to try and get the right colour – such a tool would be a huge timesaver for my macro product photography work.

A young lady is fully focused on the words of an experienced woman fortune-teller. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" I believe, it is not hard to predict the bright future for such a beautiful girl. Hope, she lives a happy life. Candid street photo.

So as we approach the end of the year, it’s time to reflect on the previous 12 months…

I think it’s fair to say that 2019 has been a fairly momentous year for me, and one that has far exceeded my expectations. I came into 2019 with no hope of going fulltime - only dreams - yet I have made it so.

There have been a few ‘bumps in the road’ along the way but generally it has been an incredibly positive year. I seem to have been accepted by my friends and work colleagues and, more importantly, my family have made great strides in their acceptance; bearing in mind that it was only 14 months ago that my parents first met me as Siân, it is pretty cool that I was able to host Christmas for my family (while wearing a rather fabulous sparkly dress!!)

So what does 2020 hold? A consolidation year, I suspect (that is unless the NHS finally engage with me, which is highly unlikely), one where I continue to adapt to my new life. And hopefully one where I start getting get some shape to my damn hips!

I enjoy sharing the story of my journey with you all here on Flickr, and from the comments I receive, it seems a great many of you enjoy watching from afar. So I guess, maybe, I give some of you hope or maybe I’m just a vaguely interesting distraction from everyday life. Whatever your reason for following me, thank you.

Here’s to a great 2020.

William Fortune founded his smokehouse in Whitby in 1872. The smokehouse still in its original Henrietta Street location has been passed down through the family, so that today it is run by the fifth generation of the Fortune family.

William’s son Martin worked in the smokehouse and also ran the donkey rides on Whitby’s sandy beaches, which he inherited from his mother Jane. The kippers were sold to customers outside the smokehouse. The kippers were also packed into little wooden boxes ready to be sent by train all over the country.

The curing process today is carried out in the same way as when the business was originally formed. The fish, which are herring, are smoked over a series of fires made from a mixture of oak, beech and softwood, the fragrant oak and beech smoke gently permeates the fish to add flavour and to colour them naturally. It usually takes about 3 fires and 18 hours to complete the smoking process in order to achieve the oaky smoked flavour and the distinctive golden brown colour of a Fortune’s kipper.

Introduction

Because she came from an impoverished family, from an early age Du Juan was determined to make a lot of money to live a better life. In order to realize this aim, she left school early on to do manual work, whatever she could do to earn money. She did not complain when the work was hard and tiring. However, she did not achieve the desired result. Regardless of how hard she worked, she could not attain the life that she wanted for herself. In 2008, harboring the dream of making a lot of money, she and her husband went to Japan to work. After a few years, the pressure of onerous work and the excessive working hours caused her to collapse from fatigue. The results of hospital investigations made her mood plummet to an all-time low, but in order to realize her ideals, Du Juan was not prepared to give in. She continued to work, carrying her illness, her mind set on struggling on. Eventually, the torture of her condition forced her to halt the progress of her pursuit of money. In the midst of her pain, she began to reflect: Why after all does man live this life? Is it worth it to risk one's life for the sake of money? Is it the case that a life of money is a happy life? These doubts constantly roamed about in her mind. Not long after, Almighty God salvation of the last days came to her. From the words of Almighty God, she came to know the source of man's life of pain, and she also understood what man should live for, and how to live before he can have a meaningful human life…. Whenever she thought of this experience, Du Juan would sigh with emotion: This bout of illness had really made her obtain blessing from woe!
