The Spandau Citadel is a fortress in Berlin, Germany, one of the best-preserved Renaissance military structures of Europe. Built from 1559–94 atop a medieval fort on an island created by the meeting of the Havel and the Spree, it was designed to protect the town of Spandau, which is now part of Berlin. In recent years it has been used as a museum and has become a popular tourist spot.
Near the German border in the beautiful surroundings of Westerwolde (Southeast Groningen), you will find the fortress of Bourtange. A unique historical defences which is without comparison. In this small, cosy fortress town, the present day and past centuries go together perfectly.
Thanks for your visit and comments, I appreciate that very much!

This attractive fortress is just off the shore of Nafplion. It dates back to the 14th century. Greece
Suomenlinna (in Finnish)/Sveaborg (in Swedish) is a beautiful island in the Helsinki archipelago.
As for the word "Sveaborg", it points to the fact that the island was once inhabited by Swedes, most likely farmers but also soldiers.
To the right, you can see a part of a fortress (which in Swedish is called 'borg').

From the town it is quite a climb to reach the citadel but well worth it for the views of the city and the fortress.
Old fortress, AKA "Gradina" (XV century) in Doboj, RS, BiH.
One of the most important defenses in the medieval bannate/duchy of Usora, this large stone structure was built in the early 13th century on the site of an earlier, clay and wood-based structure from the 10th or 11th century. In the first period of its existence, from the 13th to the late 14th or early 15th century (1415), the fortress was built in the Romanesque architecture style. This magnificent object has been burned and ransacked at least 18 times (per official/written record) in its history.
After the reconstruction of 1415, the Doboj fortress became more of a Gothic structure and had its keep reinforced with thick walls (up to 3 feet or 1 meter thick at the Eastern wall) as well as addition of a bastion/plateau with six cannon on top of it. The captain's tower was the dominating feature with a very tall and square keep dominating the fortress. Three big towers (North-West, Eastern, and Southern Gate) strategically protected the flanks of the fortress, hence rendering any idea of an attack a suicidal attempt. The Southern tower's walls became round in order to deflect cannonballs (circa 1370-1380s) and local captains at the time used Dubrovnik-made cannons, bombards, and balistas as fortress' main defense weaponry.
It is a completed castle documented in 1280. Roman and Arab antiquity is recorded, the repopulation of Sarroca is established in the fourteenth century. The lordship, then, falls to the Santcliment lineage. On April 10, 1357, the king, who owned this castle, sold all its jurisdiction (mere and mixed empire) to Francesc de Santcliment. This family, and in particular the Countess of Barutell and Botella, widow of Climent de Barutell, Santcliment and Prunera, sold in 1618 the Barony of Sarroca and Llardecans to Josep Castellbell, lord of Maials and from the end of the 18th century until the confiscation (1831) and the extinction of the lordships belonged to the Barcelona family of the Matas. [2]
The fortress still played an important role during the French War and was occupied by the Carlists in 1836. [1]

The fortress Grünwald is probably a hidden gem of Munich. It is located in the most expensive and luxurious district of Munich and surrounded by mansions and villas of footballs stars, millionaires, CEOs of several major German corporations and old aristocracy with some money :-)
The fortress got its current shape in 15th century. It was used as a country residence of Bavarian dukes, later as hunting lodge, powder magazine and VIP state prison (apparently not a very harsh one, though - all the prisoners either escaped or got their freedom back quite soon) Now the fortress belongs to the Free State of Bavaria and can be visited daily from 9 till 4 p.m.

Under the ruins of a walled city
Crumbling towers in beams of yellow light.
No flags of truce, no cries of pity;
The siege guns had been pounding through the night.
It took a day to build the city.
We walked through its streets in the afternoon.
As I returned across the fields I'd known,
I recognized the walls that I once made.
Had to stop in my tracks for fear of walking on the mines I'd laid.
And if I've built this fortress around your heart,
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire,
Then let me build a bridge, for I cannot fill the chasm,
And let me set the battlements on fire . . .

This is another view of this amazing Bulgarian fortress . Built originally by the Romans taking advantage of the mighty rock formation. The name Belogradchik literally means "white construction" , with the walls ca. 2m thick. Some of the ancient sandstone rocks are up to 200m high.

It is quite a climb from the river to the fortress but well worth doing for an interesting set of buildings and the views over the city.
The Golubac Fortress, also known as the Pigeon Town or Dove Castle, is a fortress near the Serbian town of Golubac and the Đerdap National Park. It is one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses on the Danube. In the place of the fortress was a Roman fortification named "Columbaria".
Eggum beach on the Lofoten islands (hidden behind the hill with the "fortress"). I thougth this to be a most magnificent sight, something perfect for an epic movie set.

Sometimes in the morning the fortress Königstein is surrounded by mist from the Elbe river making it very mystical.
Dating from 1299, this medieval castle and royal residence developed into a fortress in 1592 and was rebuilt into a renaissance castle 1637–1648.
Akershus Castle today contains banquet halls, the Royal Mausoleum and the government's reception rooms, and its small, historic church is the home of the royal sarcophagi.

The walled fortress was built in 1294 by the Templar Knights on what was an old Arab fortress. It was built on a small peninsula on the seafront simply earthed by a small isthmus of sand, next to the walls that made this rock an impregnable fortress.

Asen's Fortress is a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains, close to the city of Plovdiv, on a high rocky ridge on the left bank of a river. Elevation of 279 m.
The earliest archaeological findings date from the time of the Thracians, the area of the fortress being also inhabited during the Ancient Roman and Early Byzantine period. The fortress gained importance in the Middle Ages, first mentioned in the statute of the Bachkovo Monastery in the 11th century. The fortress was conquered by the armies of the Third Crusade.
Icicles hanging from a tree on the edge of Lake Ontario. This was shot close to sunset. With the original white balance the ice had a slight warm tone. It was kind of strange against the pure blue of the sky since the setting sun was 90 degrees to the right of this perspective. I adjusted the white balance to take out all the warm tones to give it a total cool feeling.
