Found this intriguing art during my short stay in Ghent, Belgium.

It is called: Supplément d’âme (2013) by Yves Velter

Size: 182x52x26

Material: Polyester / tusk-paint

Location: Zebrastraat, Ghent (Belgium) for the Stichting Liedts-Meesen

"In a reflective and poetic way, the sculpture tries to formulate a visual answer to deeply human feelings. The depicted human figure merges half into the wall. It is precisely by not depicting the other half of the figure that the boundary between the inner and the outer becomes visible."

You can see more of his work on his website.

Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco - The name "Dr. Pepper" was first used commercially in 1885. It was introduced nationally in the United States at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition as a new kind of soda pop, made with 23 flavors. Its introduction in 1885 preceded the introduction of Coca-Cola by one year. Brooklyn-born pharmacist Charles Alderton formulated it in Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas. To test his new drink, he first offered it to store owner Wade Morrison, who also found it to his liking. Patrons at Morrison's soda fountain soon learned of Alderton's new drink and began ordering a "Waco". Early advertisements for this soft drink made medical claims, stating that it "aids digestion and restores vim, vigor, and vitality.

In regard to the increasing number of natural disasters, it will not be enough to just formulate big climate targets, we have to act and we have to act NOW!

More dahlias - if you like - in my Dahlia Collection.

Rolling green hills (which are not quite as green yet due to the time of year) and behind them the rugged and steep peaks of the Wendelstein massif in the Bavarian Alps. A sight full of contrasts that immediately fascinated me.

It feels so good to draw my attention to these wonders of nature, to absorb the beauty and to remain in humility. I'm trapped and at the same time I feel so free. Caught in awe and freed from the need to take sides and formulate judgments.

How often have you been in this spot? You formulate a plan of action. You are sure you know the right steps! Once the action begins, you find yourself in a predicament! This black bear springer had to find a way to balance in this young sapling tree. Looked very much like his “first dance”. However; I am pleased to say, he did not tumble to the ground. He was able to make it safely down and was a wee bit wiser!

A summers evening in Scotland. This is one of my favourite places. The meadow sits to the right of the river Endrick which meanders through the west of Scotland where it finally reaches Loch Lomond. The area is rich in wildlife including many birds of prey, pine martens and a Sand Martin colony by the river. Spend a summers day here and walk along the river where once Charles Napier once wandered, formulating his tables of logarithms.

Have you ever come across a sight that almost defies description with the use of a single word? Presented with this opportunity, left me with this in mind. This landscape had green moss covering a rocky edge that came to an abropt stop. Almost like pulling a shower curtain to a point, leaving part of the backsplash in view.

When composing the image, the 45 degree angle tree had to be present because it just looked out of place, thus creating a tension in the shot. But at the same time delivering a symmetry with the white line in the green moss.

While formulating my composition it occurred to me there was a kind of poetic imagery present, a delicate balance of artistry was here, with a refined albeit tenuous beauty about this place. It just looked ethereal.

The original "frangipani" was a perfume developed in Italy, to sweeten the smell of leather gloves. The aroma was rather musky—not floral—and it was formulated centuries before plumerias were discovered by Europeans. The name was later applied to plumeria flowers, and today a “frangipani” fragrance typically refers to the scent of plumeria blooms.

In Asia, plumeria flowers adorn Buddhist and Hindu temples. The trees are known as “temple trees."A healthy and productive plumeria usually starts blooming in early summer, which generally continues into early fall. However, some varieties grown in consistently warm climates can bloom almost year-round. When it comes to flowers lasting once they bloom, flower clusters typically last for almost a week.

This was the location where my D3400 decided to die on me, before investing in the D5600. The photo above is a few yards down the road on the same side, I was playing around with the Hue when I noticed this distinct alien green colour, so I enhanced the saturation and thus got this shade that instantly reminded me of the Borg Cube from the latter day Star Trek with Patrick Stewart before the PC brigade ruined Star Trek for everyone! As was understandably noted, the Borg was perhaps the most terrifying villains in the Star Trek saga, we all know the quote...

" We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

So you could say this is colour is Borg Green. Oh and if you're wondering about the title, I took it from those annoying Garnier adverts that always ended by their slogan, "Formulated by Laboratire Garnier." My version is far more interesting!!

I hope everyone's week gets off to a great start and so as always, thank you! :)

Colmanara Wildcat is an intergeneric hybrid consisting of miltonia, odontoglosum, and oncidium. It grows in a wide range of temperature conditions from warm to cool. The flower spikes emerge often twice per year and are colored in yellow, burgundy, and mahogany.

Light:

Low to medium. 1000-2000 footcandles. If this plant receives too much light the leaf tips will begin showing blackish spots. This is not abnormal for many intergeneric hybrids in the oncidiae group. Keep shadier in the summer and give it more light in the winter.

Humidity:

50% or higher is required. Humidity trays are helpful in maintaining proper humidity levels around the plants. Misting can be done in the morning as long as the plant leaves are dry by nightfall.

Water:

Use rain, reverse osmosis, or distilled water for best results. Water thoroughly being sure water is coming out all the drain holes of the pot. Water as the plant approaches dryness but do not allow it to become bone dry between watering. The pseudobulbs can be your guide. If the new pseudobulbs shrivel, this is a sign that you are not watering the plant enough.

Fertilizer:

If using rain, distilled or reverse osmosis water, use CalMag 15-5-15. If using municipal water with pH of 7.5 or lower, use GrowMore Ureafree 20-10-20. Use either at the rate of one teaspoon per gallon of water if fertilizing every third watering, or 1/2 teaspoon if fertilizing every watering. If fertilizing every watering, flush with clear water once a month.

I also highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time I water.

Flowering:

This plant can flower more than once per year. The spikes very often branch when mature and can have up to 50 or more flowers per spray.

Repotting:

Repot this plant in the spring to early summer months after flowering. Utilize a mix which drains quickly yet retains moisture evenly throughout. I recommend a medium grade bark mix using Douglas fir bark, charcoal, perlite, with the addition of poultry grade peat moss or coconut husk chips. Keep dry for the first week to 10 days after repotting.

"Although the Sun appears to "rise" from the horizon, it is actually the Earth's motion that causes the Sun to appear. The illusion of a moving Sun results from Earth observers being in a rotating reference frame; this apparent motion is so convincing that many cultures had mythologies and religions built around the geocentric model, which prevailed until astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus formulated his heliocentric model in the 16th century."

People believe that Galileo formulated his theory about the movement of the pendulum by watching the swing of this incense lamp (this is a replica) hanging from the ceiling of the ship. That lamp, smaller and simpler than the current one, is kept in Camponsanto, in the Aulla Chapel next to the cathedral.

This is the original:

flic.kr/p/RZfcwt

His first contribution to science took place at the Duomo in Pisa. The sexton had just lit a lamp hanging from a long rope and pushed it. Pendulum motion was measured with Galileo's heartbeat. He realized that the time of each swing was always the same and formulated the law of "isochronism" of the pendulum. So he found the first practical use for that regularity and designed a clock model.

Duomo holds Galileo's two lamps, an important witness to early studies of gravity.

The ceiling has a carved and gilded wood ceiling, dating from the 17th century, the work of sculptors Domenico and Bartolomeo Atticciati

Mount Tahoma (Rainier) and Little Tipsoo Lake, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Some sunsets announce themselves with with a blare of color, painting the sky in vivid shades that demand the eye's attention. Others whisper with the faintest of hues and are seen, and felt, mostly with the heart. This was one of the latter.

As detailed in my previous post, Racing Sunset, my friend and I were trying to finish a hike in time to watch what we hoped would be a spectacular mountain sunset. As we were slowly and carefully picking our way down yet another snowy slope on the trail however (no time to stop and put microspikes back on!), it became clear that we were unlikely make it to our originally planned viewpoint. So we quickly formulated a backup plan. When I had hiked in this area last summer, I had found a boot path trail that went up the hillside above and around this small lake, and the high point was above the trees enough to have a clear view of Tahoma. The tricky part was finding the cutoff to the trail in an area that was still snow covered. But we managed to scramble up through the snow to a point where the narrow dirt path became visible, and quickly made our way up the hillside above the lake. From that vantage point we did have a great view, and enjoyed bonus of having our viewpoint all to ourselves, since there are other much more accessible sunset viewing locations for those with better timing :-)

As for the sunset itself, apparently someone hit the mute button on the sky, as it did not light up in brilliant colors nor illuminate Tahoma in a rosy pink sunset glow. This was about as colorful as the sky ever got that evening. [The photo was taken as we were hiking back down the other side of the lake and the gleam of yellow light reflecting on the water caught my eye.]

And yet there was still a profound beauty to it. As the sky faded toward dusk, a hush enveloped the landscape, and on a perfect summer evening it felt truly special to be in the presence of Tahoma's majestic grandeur.

[Note: You can see a few photographers and their tripods down below at the edge of the lake.]

The Volkswagen Beetle (officially the Volkswagen Type 1, informally in Germany the Volkswagen Käfer and in the U.S. as Volkswagen Bug) is a two-door, four passenger, rear-engine economy car manufactured and marketed by German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. The need for this kind of car, and its functional objectives, was formulated by the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, who wanted a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for his country's new road network. Hitler contracted Ferdinand Porsche in 1934 to design and build it. Porsche and his team took until 1938 to finalise the design. The influence on Porsche's design of other contemporary cars, such as the Tatra V570 and the work of Josef Ganz remains a subject of dispute. The result was one of the first rear-engined cars since the Brass Era. With 21,529,464 produced, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made. Although designed in the 1930s, the Beetle was only produced in significant numbers from 1945 on (mass production had been put on hold during the Second World War) when the model was internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1, and marketed simply as the Volkswagen (or "People's Car"). Later models were designated Volkswagen 1200, 1300, 1500, 1302 or 1303, the former three indicating engine displacement, the latter two derived from the type number. The model became widely known in its home country as the Käfer (German for "beetle") and was later marketed as such in Germany, and as the Volkswagen in other countries. For example, in France it was known as the Coccinelle (French for ladybird/ladybug). [source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Beetle]

In the end, all becomes a compromise, of the original thought,

We all know how important sleep is. The internet is saturated with information about its benefits: it is widely agreed that sleep enhances learning, and enables the mind to make good decisions. Furthermore, sufficient sleep fosters good relationships and gives people the right mind to formulate a balanced perspective in situations.

Conversely, sleep-deprivation poses a health-risk, not only to our physical, but also to mental and emotional, well-being; the damage from sleep-deficiency can occur either in an instant (the classic example would be the cause of traffic accidents), or continued harm over time: where sleep-deprivation may actually maintain low mood and heightened anxiety - sometimes even inducing altered, and augmented, states of reality!

However, while I know these things to be true: I don't actually pay any attention to this advice. My insomnia and sleep-deprivation is, admittedly: wholly volitional and habituated.

There.

That's me right there.

I'm sure there are many other things that people ought to be doing: but don't. What are yours, I wonder?

...on a much lighter note, this capture was quickly taken by my eldest son (with some help from yours truly), as we all waited for their mum, my wife, to finish work!

The don't waste any time these tiny butterflies. Its sad they are only estimated to live two weeks.

Dawn at Loch Lomond.

3exp HDR plus a texture (courtesy of Skeletal Mess a.k.a. Ghostbones) to give it a bit of character.

I would have liked to explore this area a bit more but unfortunately some fine upstanding examples of the flower of Scottish youth decided to take a break from impressing everyone within a 5-mile radius with the extent of their linguistic skills, throwing each other off the pier and strewing this area of outstanding scenic beauty with litter and empty Buckie bottles, to offer me some help. After a whiff of their breath, during which I barely managed to stay sober myself, I politely (well .. sort of) declined their offer and left for pastures new.

Being a deep philosophical thinker of no little repute, I have spent some time formulating an effective cure for this sort of problem but, since it revolves around the adoption, by western democracies, of mass execution as a social policy, its implemetation seems unlikely in the foreseeable future .. unless, of course, I am invited to rule the world.

Wonderful conditions on Friday morning at Derwentwater.

Bit of a story as to how I ended up here which essentially involved me standing under the Ribblehead Viaduct in the pitch black at 10pm feeling tiny and vulnerable under the clearest star strewn sky I've ever seen. My mind a mix of wonder at the beauty of the night sky and apprehension at being about a mile from the van with no phone signal, all alone except for axe wielding maniacs for company. I took a few test shots before deciding there was no way I was going to walk back at 2am to have a go at shooting the Milky Way.

The plan was for a couple of days away in Pembrokeshire. This would be my one 'big trip,' for the month. I'd spent the previous week avidly reading the Fotovue book and I was happy with my itinerary. Weather looked great with the forecast even better. The road through Castlemartin firing range to Green Bridge, Elegug Stacks and St Govan's was open, with clear skies one night and near perfect sunset and sunrise conditions for the second day....

I've spoken about this before. I love visiting these amazing locations we are so lucky to have in the UK but it's always much more enjoyable to have someone to share them with. So with that in mind and the van packed I set off....

Only the van decided to turn left and not right when I reached the M6. I pulled in at Charnock Richards services, made a cuppa and hastily drew up a new itinerary. Within a couple of hours I found myself stood at the lone tree in Malham for sunset. Another hour and I'd bought my curry from The Royal Spice in Settle and was making my way up to Ribblehead feeling smug I'd chosen a curry house that had signed pictures of some major A-Listers who had eaten there, most notably Michael Caine. As I drove up the B6479 I was trying to think of a joke involving Michael Caine and hot curries. You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off naturally came to mind but I couldn't formulate it in to a worthwhile anecdote; The curry was delicious, Chicken Handi. A little on the small side but bursting with flavour.

The new plan was Malham for sunset, curry in Settle, a quick scout at Ribblehead before 3-4 hrs sleep and some astro, then on to Keswick for sunrise where the forecast was screaming mist. I'd been wanting to shoot Otterbield Bay on Derwentwater for some time having scratched the similar itch of High Brandlehow Bay on my last visit to The Lakes three months previously. I'd rang Helen and the change of plan meant she could drive up Friday morning, arriving around midday to join me whilst I caught up on some sleep.

Standing there under the stars and marveling at the awe inspiring structure of the viaduct, the Victorians definitely built things to last, I did feel a little disappointed in myself at making the inevitable decision to bail on the astro idea. I just didn't feel comfortable. And with the decision made it was off to Keswick.

Alarm set for 5am I made my way down to Otterbield to be presented with the most wonderful conditions. Derwentwater was like a mill pond, there was intermittent low hanging cloud and mist, swirling around in what little wind there was and the only noise was from the birds and their early dawn chorus. As the sun began to get higher and reflect off the mist I could see the deep rich ochres and oranges that accompany sunrise on the fells and the snow topped distinctive shapes of Blencathra and Skiddaw in the distance looked stunningly beautiful.

After a couple of hours wandering around the shore of Otterbield Bay I made my way around to Ashness Jetty and despite the warm light of sunrise having passed, pockets of mist remained and there was a beautiful clarity to the air. And what's more I had the place to myself too.

The morning must rank as the finest I've ever had since I picked up a camera.

Pembrokeshire can wait for another time when hopefully I'll be able to share the experience. I only wish I had been able to share this experience too.

Balm for the soul.

Palazzo Carciotti is an eighteenth-century palace in Trieste, located in the city center, at the beginning of the Grand Canal. The building was built on an area once used for salt pans. The client was the Greek merchant Demetrio Carciotti, who settled in Trieste in 1775.

For the construction of this building, Carciotti entrusted the architect Matteo Pertsch, who presented his project in 1798. The construction work lasted until 1805.

Originally the building included the owner's residence on the main floor facing the sea, warehouses and stables on the ground floor and sixteen houses on the two upper floors. On the ground floor, in addition to the goods warehouse of the Carciotti company, there was a printing house, offices of various commercial houses and food warehouses.

In 1831 the building became the first headquarters of Assicurazioni Generali, then housed the Austro-Hungarian Bank, offices of the Allied Military Government (1947-1954)and the Port Authority.

The palace, being one of the most prestigious buildings in Trieste, has always been the subject of many reuse ideas which, however, have never been followed up. After the move of the Port Authority, the Municipality has formulated several hypotheses including conference centre, museum center and hotel.

(Wikipedia)

"Today a threatened species, the yellow-footed rock-wallaby is one of Australia‘s most charming and attractive marsupials.

Yellow footed rock wallabies are the largest marsupial of the rock-wallaby family of wallabies. Sitting up, they reach a height of about 60 centimetres, and weigh between 6 and 12 centimetres. They are distinguished by their white cheek-stripes; orange ears, forearms, and hind legs; a striped tail; soft, white fur on the belly; and of course, their yellow feet.

The first European to see a yellow-foot was most likely the explorer Edward John Eyre. During his exploration of the Flinders Ranges in 1840, he recorded seeing them in large numbers at Mt Aroona, noting in his journal that ‘they leapt and clambered up among the steep sides of the cliffs in a manner quite incredible.’

In the 1880s, yellow footed rock wallabies were said to occur in ‘droves of 60 or 70’. Tragically, hunting and introduced predators reduced their numbers considerably. Around the turn of the 20th century, tens of thousands of yellow-foots were hunted for ‘sport’ and profit. The beauty of their fur made shooting them profitable.

By 1912, the decline was obvious. The South Australian Parliament passed the Animals Protection Act, forbidding the hunting of yellow-foots for their skins. Yet, even after the hunting stopped, wallaby numbers did not recover as the wallaby competed with habitat destruction and introduced herbivores. Reduced populations now had to deal with feral cats and fox predation and compete with introduced grazers, sheep, rabbits, and feral goats – with whom they share an overlapping diet and enter intense competition in drought.

In the 1970s, conservation efforts were stepped up. In 1975, the South Australia National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) began formulating a management plan for the populations in that state and the wallaby had conservation status. Academics studied the breeding and population patterns of the wallabies, and plans were made to reintroduce a wallaby population with a genetic diversity of captive-bred animals back into the wild.

In the Flinders Ranges, the yellow-footed rock-wallaby was on the verge of extinction, with a population of only around 40 by 1992. Thanks to the elimination of predators and competitors – foxes and goats – they have since bounced back, with more than 1000 living around Brachina Gorge. Similarly, the Gawler Ranges National Park has seen a population of around 6 bounce back into the hundreds, thanks to skilful conservation management.

Despite this encouraging population growth, the yellow-footed rock-wallaby remains a vulnerable species in South Australia, and an endangered species in New South Wales and Queensland."

True communication on the deepest level is more than a simple sharing of ideas, conceptual knowledge, or formulated truth. The kind of communication that is necessary at this level must also be “communion”: beyond the level of words, a communion in authentic experience which is shared not only on a “preverbal” level but also on a “postverbal” level. . . . And the deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is wordless. It is beyond words, and it is beyond speech, and it is beyond concept.” (HGL x)

Faith presupposes belief, but belief is no substitute for faith, and faith is not reducible to belief. If belief is separated from faith it is but a formal and spiritually meaningless assent. And if faith does not formulate its belief it is an unintelligible act. As an ineffable insight that seeks expression, faith seeks to declare its belief in the form of a creed.

This is the birthplace and was the family home of Sir Isaac Newton. He was born there on 4 January 1643. At that time, it was a yeoman's farmstead, principally rearing sheep.

Newton returned here in 1666 when Cambridge University closed owing to the plague, and here, he performed many of his most famous experiments, most notably his work on light and optics.[1] This is also said to be the site where Newton, observing an apple fall from a tree, was inspired to formulate his law of universal gravitation

Are dogmas unnecessary?

The adequacy of dogmas depends on whether they claim to formulate or to allude; in the first case they flaunt and fail, in the second they indicate and illumine. To be adequate they must retain a telescopic relation to the theme in which they refer, must point to the mysteries of God rather than picture them. All they can do is indicate a way, not mark and end, of thinking. Unless they serve as humble signposts on the way dogmas are obstacles...

...Unless we realize that dogmas are tentative rather then final, that they are accommodations rather than definitions, intimations rather than descriptions; unless we learn how to share the moment and the insight to which they are trying to testify, we stand guilty of literalmindedness, of pretending to know what cannot be put into words; we are guilty of intellectual idolatry. The indispensable function of the dogmas is to make it possible to rise above them.

"A map does not just chart, it unlocks and formulates meaning; it forms bridges between here and there, between disparate ideas that we did not know were previously connected." - Reif Larsen

“Sometimes, when people have a low opinion of their own worth—or, perhaps, when they refuse responsibility for their lives—they choose a new acquaintance, of precisely the type who proved troublesome in the past. Such people don’t believe that they deserve any better—so they don’t go looking for it. Or, perhaps, they don’t want the trouble of better. Freud called this a ‘repetition compulsion.’ He thought of it as an unconscious drive to repeat the horrors of the past—sometimes, perhaps, to formulate those horrors more precisely, sometimes to attempt more active mastery and sometimes, perhaps, because no alternatives beckon. People create their worlds with the tools they have directly at hand. Faulty tools produce faulty results. Repeated use of the same faulty tools produces the same faulty results. It is in this manner that those who fail to learn from the past doom themselves to repeat it. It’s partly fate. It’s partly inability. It’s partly … unwillingness to learn? Refusal to learn? Motivated refusal to learn?” Jordan B Peterson

A myriad of mynah birds set against the gold and blue of a shoreline is frozen in a moment in time. This is one of a few surviving examples of the theme of a flock of mynah depicted in the screen format. The artist has created an engaging sense of pattern, while using detailed brushwork to imbue each bird with animated expression.

Though not native to Japan within Eastern Asian literally tradition mynah birds serve as emblems of honesty independent thinking and even resistance to unjust authority.Whether this work can be interpreted as political protest I'm impossible to know, but the unusual iconography focusing on mynah birds to the exclusion of any other creature or even landscape elements, lends itself to such an interpretation. It also dates to the era when Japanese artists were formulating continental modes of ink painting to create their own distinct styles.
