"Parade ground formal" Mister Hanson said
to those of us in earshot as we watched
the Pleasers stiffly strut like walking dead.
They passed among the old gravestones, whose notched
and crumbling surfaces we'd hoped to care-
fully examine, and record inscrip-
tions all but lost to vandals and to wear
that comes for all left standing in the slip
of years. Our teacher, Mister Hansen, made
us wait respectfully until the Pleas-
ers passed. They knew we waited, so they stayed
a longer time. "Put off by such as these..."
So Mister Hansen said. He didn't seem
to talk to us, though. "...pets of this Regime..."
The sun was going down before our teach-
er let us run to our assignments. Mine
was rounded on the top, and cracked, and each
small sunken letter had a tree design
that made it feel, when seen together, like
the stone was covered in a forest. One
faint clearing drew me closer in. A spike
of rusted iron in the center caught the sun,
now dim and giving everything a yel-
low look. Our uniforms were blue, but in
this light were black. I breathed a little Celt-
ic prayer to Holy Mendel where the blue had been.
"Be quick now boys," called Mister Hansen. "Ves-
pers in an hour - and you've yet to dress."

Once again I've started a promising alternate/parallel universe story and left it hanging. Don't know if I'll ever get back to it. It's a young adult fantasy story told from a child's point of view. A master and his school children are out on a field trip to a local cemetery where they are stymied by the powerful minions of the authorities - The Pleasers - who don't seem very pleasant at all, and folks know enough not to cross them. In this universe, Mendel is a saint and the universally-accepted formal religion has a Celtic flavor. Fun to imagine... Very visualfor me.
I wrote the piece in April 2008 andhave spent allthis time looking for the right image to go with it. Tonight I finally found a vintage print among a batch of found photos from Germany (click here to see the print before enhancement), scanned it soon after and got to work adapting it for the story. It's not exactly what I envisioned, but it's darned close. And a good thing I found it, too. I was actually about to piece an image together from various old photos and draw the rest. Glad I didn't have to.

In a heartwarming and emotional ceremony, Presidium bade farewell to its outgoing students of Grade XII. The ceremony was graced with the benign presence of the Hon’ble Chairperson, Mrs. Sudha Gupta. She acknowledged the students and wished them all the best as they stride into the future. She motivated them to move ahead with a positive attitude in life and to convert their aspirations into inspirations. Carrying themselves with poise in beautifully draped sarees, the girls had a ladylike elegance to their personality; while the boys dressed up in dapper formal suits looked chivalrous. The beautiful theme of the ceremony was 'Au revoir futurs dirigeants'- goodbye until we meet again. Nostalgia filled in the venue as the students took a trip down the memory lane. Grade 11 students came forward to bid goodbye to their seniors and wished them good luck for their future. Overwhelmed with emotions and with a surge of mixed feelings they took a pledge to carry the Presidian spirit with them and vowed to be responsible and contributing citizens of the country. The farewell ceremony was a perfect amalgamation of smiles, tears, treasured moments and memories.

Groups of high-school aged kids descended to Millennium Park to have their pictorial. Prom night tonight I guess.
This OOAK mauvey pink upcycled formal is marvelous! The skirt is original with some added satin stripes to lengthen it, and the top is made from new satin fabric.
The fabric is 100% polyester. The size tag in the skirt says size 13/14. My model is a size 6 and this would probably fit a size 8 pretty well. The skirt is 44 inches (112 cm) long.
The following measurements are taken flat, from side to side, so they need to be doubled for around the body measurements.
The top measures
19.5 inches (50.3 cm) at the bustline,
16 inches (40.7 cm) at the waist.
The skirt measures
14.5 inches (36.8 cm) at the waist and
21 inches (53.5 cm) at the hips.
My model is 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m).
Her measurements are
bust - 34 inches (86.5 cm),
waist – 27.5 inches (70 cm) and
hips – 40.5 inches (103 cm).
