It's always sort of an adventure to visit the oldest trees on the planet. They aren't exactly on the way to anywhere, and they certainly aren't in a particularly hospitable environment. This time we took a new route up Silver Canyon Rd, little did I know this would take us up 6-7,000 feet of vertical off-road before joining with the more reasonably graded main road. The transmission overheated multiple times and we had to pause to wait for things to cool off, missing sunset mostly, but catching twilight, and some late night Astro for thanksgiving. These trees seem to have ancient knowledge from the beginning of time. They make quite the statement stretching back as far as 4,500 years ago when they were born.

The cold and desolate atmosphere during this wintery day created a blanket of overwhelming serenity. The fresh snow acted as insulation as I moved through an area I had never been before; I was unsure of the chosen direction but I had a steady sense I was on the right track. Captured in the area of Moose Lake, BC, in a wilderness frequented by grizzly bears, wolves and moose; on this day I was surprised (and perhaps thankful) for their absence.

Having driven hundreds of kilometres in search of a shot like this, I was instantly engulfed by the peaceful stillness. Though snowy landscapes during winter are no doubt prevalent in British Columbia, a scene like this one isn’t as common as you may think.

The depth shown by the white frosted branches in the foreground with the fresh snowcapped trees in the background, results only from the ideal mix of fresh snow, optimal lighting, hidden wildlife, and cooperative weather.

My hope for this image was highlighting perfectly lined trees in the foreground which slowly faded into the forested background. Following my lengthy drive, I immediately recognized the opportunity and landscape I had been searching for. I quickly raced towards it knowing I was competing with the shifting light. I hauled out my gear and rushed to compose the image.

Frigid and cold I fired off only a few shots, quickly trying to determine the correct composition. I was racing against time to beat the possibility of muted light or worse, the sun burning away the very frost I worked so hard to find; to say this was challenging is an understatement.

I captured exactly what my mind had imagined. I knew a tranquil and powerful moment in time was found through my lens… I had finally found ‘Arctic Frost’

Turdus ignobilis is a widely distributed thrush species throughout northern South America and the Amazon, inhabiting a diverse set of habitats ranging from floodplain forests, white sand “campinas”, to highland forests (Andes and Tepuis). There are currently six known subspecies of T. ignobilis, which vary extensively phenotypically and also ecologically.

Most of my kittens love the snow. Spotty is one of them. She was following me around most of the afternoon in the fresh powder that fell the night before, which made for a nice shot with the tracks behind her. Any deeper, and she probably wouldn't like it as much.

This is the Hoffstadt Creek Bridge, one of 14 bridges along the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway that leads to Johnston Ridge Observatory in Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. This bridge is the tallest of the 14, and where I stood to capture this image is the edge of the blast zone. All the trees are now nicely grown in the area, but 41 years ago, they were blasted away, or mowed down by massive mudflows. The edge of the blast zone in this particular area is about 22 miles away from the observatory.

I liked the leading line this white bridge made over and through all the green foliage.
