Mountains Make Me Happy

Being in a forest also makes me happy

Having both makes me blessed

Seeing trees thousands of years old

Brings out a wonder in shared world

I then see the blue skies above

And know I am truly experiencing life.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon in Inyo National Forest while walking the Methuselah Walk. The view is looking to the north up a nearby mountainside seemingly covered with those ancient bristlecone pine trees. I felt the blue skies would be more of a negative space, so I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera and zoom in so that this mountainside filled up most of the image. There would be a portion of blue skies though to act as a color contrast to the earth tones present in the rest of the image. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

From an overlook point along the Discovery Trail with a view looking to the southwest and more distant Sierra Nevada mountains. My thinking in composing this image was to use the down slope and then opened up mountain plane with groupings of Ancient Bristlecone Pines. The road would then be a leading line into the image with the Sierra Nevada mountains as a far off destination. The blue skies and mountains would then be that color contrast to complement the image with earth-tones present in the lower portion. I later worked with control points (line and circular) in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

A setting looking to the south while taking in views across a mountainside with Methuselah trees in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of the Inyo National Forest. My thinking in composing this image was to capture a view of these ancient bristlecone pine trees with a backdrop a blue skies and distant mountains. Given the haze that was starting to build up from the wildfires in this portion of California, I decided to use the ClearView tool in DxO PhotoLab 5 to cut through some of the haze for the final image.

Methuselah Trees

Like a Johnny Cash Song

I thought I’d been almost everywhere

Then I had the pleasure

Meeting an acquaintance with

4000 year old trees

They called me youngster, a kid

I listened and learned of their journeys

Across the millennia of time

High up in their mountain hideaway

10,000 feet and higher

They had some amazing views

Some across valleys and meadow

A distant view of Sierra Nevada

They'd been before indigenous people walked

Before the Europeans came seeking a new life

The stories they can tell to a youngster like me.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon while walking the Discovery Trail in the Schulman Grove of Inyo National Forest. The view is looking up a mountainside to the east with this one ancient bristlecone pine tree. My thinking in composing this image was to pull back on the focal length enough to capture not just this one lone tree, but also some of the surrounding landscape to add to the feeling present of grandeur and solitude. This mountainside setting is a little over 10,000 feet elevation.

A setting looking to the north while taking in views across ancient bristlecone pine forest from the parking area at the Schulman Grove. According to peakbagger web site this is looking up Discovery Peak. My thinking in composing this image was to capture the view looking up the mountainside with the woodland setting. The whites of the mountains of the soil and rock would be that color contrast to bring out more the colors of the trees.

While walking the Discovery Trail and a view looking to the southwest beyond some nearby ancient bristlecone pines to a view of the Sierra Nevada mountains. My thinking in composing this image was to capture that look beyond and use a layer to approach doing so. Nearby would be some ancient bristlecone pine trees, then the open mountain plain with a road leading to more more distant mountains.

While walking the Discovery Trail in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of the Inyo National Forest with a view looking up a mountainside and to the northwest. My thinking in composing this image was to have blue skies as a color contrast backdrop for the earth tones present in the lower portion of the image. I felt that would bring out more of the shapes present in the image captured. I later converted this to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 3 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

While walking the Discovery Trail in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest with a view looking to the northwest to a nearby tree. My thinking in composing this image was to capture the entirety of the tree from top to bottom including some landscape at the base as well as blue skies above to add to a more complete setting for this tree. Using a portrait orientation also allowed me to better achieve that image captured.

While walking the Discovery Trail with a view looking to the northeast across a mountainside in the White Mountains. This location is in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of the Inyo National Forest. My thinking in composing this image was to bring those trees more or less into the image center. There would then be some nearby foreground with the rocks and soil and the backdrop of blue skies above.

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views across open mountain plain while walking the Discovery Trail in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of the Inyo National Forest. My thinking in composing this image was to use the White Mountain Road as a leading line into the image with the more distant Sierra Nevada mountains as a far off destination. Having just moved to DxO PhotoLab 5, I decided to use the linear control point to bring out more details in the wildfire haze present in those mountains.

The image itself would have a layered approach with the nearby ancient bristlecone pine trees before coming up to a road that in someways would divide the image. With the mild temperatures, this seemed just the right place to take in a sunset and listen to the sounds of the trees moving with every passing breeze or birds singing away. Definitely a wonderful bookend to a day. So while part of me wanted to capture an image that brought out light across the entire setting I was looking, I decided to focus and meter on the clouds off in the distance above the South Chelan Mountains. I could then pull out a little bit of light in the nearby balcony area, but I wanted to feel as if it was just a little bit silhouetted.

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, California

One of the towns we passed through after visiting Mount Shasta was Weed, Ca. Weed was a small but quant town that has a gorgeous view of Mount Shasta.

Mount Goliath Natural Area - Large virgin stands of bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata) intersperse with Engelmann spruce forest and alpine grassland on this 160-acre natural area located at timberline on the flank of Mount Evans. The gnarled and twisted pines on windswept granite ridges represent the northernmost occurrence of bristlecone in Colorado. One of the oldest known bristlecone pines in Colorado (more than 1,500 years old) is found here. (Colorado State Parks)

The Mount Evans Scenic Byway begins at the junction of Interstate 70 and State Highway 103 near Idaho Springs, Colorado and continues on State Highway 5 through the Mount Evans Wilderness Area where it ends near the summit of Mount Evans. The byway is 28 miles in length and gains over 7,000 feet of altitude. Achieving a final altitude of 14,130 feet, this is the highest paved road in North America.

There is a park fee charged to gain access to the upper portion of the byway at the entrance to Highway 5. This portion of the byway is often narrow, with sudden dropoffs that have no guardrails. It is typically only accessible from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, although the amount of access and specific dates vary depending on the weather and road conditions.

This route was designated a Forest Service Byway on July 1, 1993 by the US Forest Service and has also been designated a Colorado Scenic Byway by the Colorado Department of Transportation. (Wikipedia)
