The blue tit is a small tit that gets its name from the blue color of its cap, wings and tail. His head is remarkable. The face, largely white, is barred by three dark blue to black lines, two features that pass through the eye to join the neck of the same color, and a broad line that joins a necklace, which itself borders the white cheeks and joined the neck. The adult male is distinguished by the blue hue of the plumage more marked, especially the cap. The blue of the female is duller.

Love watching landings, only thing better is aerial exchanges. I am always amazed at the speed and accuracy that is required to stick one of these landings.

Found some time, after taking down the Holiday Lights and Christmas Decorations, to scoot over to a local wildlife sanctuary; the trip paid off ;-)

Cooper’s Hawk:

Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high-speed pursuit of other birds.

Dashing through vegetation to catch birds is a dangerous lifestyle. In a study of more than 300 Cooper’s Hawk skeletons, 23 percent showed old, healed-over fractures in the bones of the chest, especially of the furcula, or wishbone.

A Cooper's Hawk captures a bird with its feet and kills it by repeated squeezing. Falcons tend to kill their prey by biting it, but Cooper’s Hawks hold their catch away from the body until it dies. They’ve even been known to drown their prey, holding a bird underwater until it stopped moving.

Once thought averse to towns and cities, Cooper’s Hawks are now fairly common urban and suburban birds. Some studies show their numbers are actually higher in towns than in their natural habitat, forests. Cities provide plenty of Rock Pigeon and Mourning Dove prey.

I must say, I was shocked when I saw how nighttime changes an owl's face. While they become fearsome predators at night, they also become much more adorable to us humans, who have evolved to perceive large eyes as captivating and innocent.

In an effort to find area barred owls, I set out to a local park before sunrise and came upon this Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) in the dark. This darkness was so inky and thick, in fact, that I could not see if he was in his hole or not, so trained my tripoded camera on the hole, manually focused, and finally saw him in the preview window! Shocked for sure by those massive pupils staring down at me, a frog (which he swallowed greedily prior to this photo and while I watched) in his talons!

Interestingly, owl eyeballs are not balls at all, but so well evolved for night vision that they have elongated into eye cones. For this reason, they cannot move their eyes in their sockets, and have evolved wildly-flexible necks. With their highly acute retinas replete with rods (the light and movement sensing eye bits), there wasn't much room for cones, and so most owls see limited or no color!

I had another practice attempt at capturing a bird in flight when this Osprey flew overhead. My main goal here was to try to focus on the eye and get it sharp. There wasn’t much light to work with but I managed to capture just enough to get some colour showing in his eye. Some photographer said you need LUCK when capturing these moments. ( Labouring Under Correct Knowledge). I shall continue to labour on! Happy Wing Wednesday!

Got the focus wrong on this one, front rock ok, the rest a soft focus.. liked the compo though :-)

A very intelligent, talented and graceful woman. She excels in clubs and fire staff. A delight to watch.

I will be featuring her in my forthcoming ‘Framing Life Series’.

My project for the week was to try taking shots showing speed and focus....I was pleased with this one ... also the composition is pretty well balanced. I used ‘burst’ mode on my camera....

The Short Eared Owl was focused on something in the grass as I focused on him. I'm sure it knew I was there as their sense of sight and hearing are so keen. Lincoln County, Missouri.

This is the split rail fence that borders a portion of the Mill Valley Dog Park and is probably the most colorful fence you'll find anywhere, with lichen growing along its entire length.

I don't know what Flickr has done with the EXIF data, but I set the aperture at f22 for this shot, in order to get the entire length of the fence in sharp focus. Whatever Flickr's problem is, I hope they fix it soon because, whenever I see an interesting image, I immediately check the EXIF data to see how the shot was accomplished, and I really miss not having it.

I am using here an adapter and a lens (Helios 44M-7, a 58mm lens) that is not coupled with the camera (Leica M8). So, the camera does not help at all with focussing. Instead, I used a measuring tape, adjusted the lens accordingly and chose a narrow aperture (F11) to increase the chance of achieving good focus. It does work, though this is my first successful shot applying this method. In "real life", I think, I should use a portrait lens that is coupled to the camera.
