I heard a new (for me) sparrow call at Sunset Beach, Cape May on a rainy, overcast day. Most of the time the bird stayed hidden in the brush, but once it jumped up for a quick look. I was having trouble with the id until Philip posted a beautiful image of one recently that looked exactly like this. The all pink bill sealed the deal. (Sorry for the quality.....I'm using the new bird pass for this lifer)

The field sparrow (Spizella pusilla) is a small New World sparrow in the family Emberizidae. It is about 140 mm (6 in) long and weighs about 12.5 g (0.4 oz). The head is grey with a rust-coloured crown, white eye-ring and pink bill. The upper parts are brown streaked with black and buff, the breast is buff, the belly is white and the tail is forked. There are two different colour morphs, one being greyer and the other more rufous.

I severely cropped this view to better show the slim body and long-tail that the previous shot lacked. This is much more how I remember the overall feel of this sparrow along with its plain face look and all pink bill. (American Tree Sparrows are so similar!)

When touched, it feels a threat and drain water from the leaves and branches, withering.

Late afternoon light on a handsome Field Sparrow, part of a small flock of mixed sparrows. I thought about cloning out some of the branches in photoshop but I felt they framed the sparrow as well as creating leading lines. Loop 12 Boat Launch / wetlands area, Dallas, Texas, 13 January 2024
