Another photo of the Merlin that decided to visit my yard. This was taken in low light because it was snowing, through a window and with a camera held by shaky hands because I was so excited to see it. Taken in Calgary, Alberta.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) female

I spent some time with Belle and Bronson this morning. I loved the dappled light on her wings.

A little female Anna Hummingbird perched under the last rays of light before night falls.

Though there is no longer snow on the tree branches, there is still snow on the ground and these little birds not only survive the winters here on the island, but they are already nesting. My parents have fledgling Anna Hummingbirds in their yard and its only mid Feb on an exceptionally cold winter here on the island! These little birds are amazing, considering their cousins, the Rufous Hummingbirds migrate south for the winter months!

Conocephalus discolor, also called Conocephalus fuscus. The Long-Winged Conehead.

Amazingly i found several Conehead nymphs in the garden last summer.

This is a female nymph, very small.

This house finch pair has been hanging around the back yard the last couple of days, and they've been quite cooperative.

Hey! look over there, ... there's another one!

The female village weaver (ploceus cucullatus), though still a colourful bird, lacks the all-over bright yellow colouring of the male. Photographed in Trou D'Eau Douce, Mauritius.

Orange-tip : Anthocharis cardamines

Another bird on our fence - I caught her as she was doing her preening thing, and got an interesting expression...

A darling female Rufous Hummingbird sipping nectar from our Hosta Spikes last summer. She was resting on one of the blooms to conserve a little engery while fueling up with nectar. I have seen a couple male Rufous Hummingbirds already, I can't wait until the females arrive. Photo taken in our backyard in Camas, Washington, on July 24, 2024.

A female Northern Harrier was hunting the dikes for her next meal! Photo taken at Steigerwald Lake NWR.

While male mallards, with their lustrous green heads, white neck collars, and chestnut breast feathers, are instantly identifiable to bird experts and nonexperts alike, the same cannot be said for female mallards. From a distance, females may be easily confused with several other large pale brown ducks

Less showy than her male counterpart, the female Black Redstart is a charming, subtly beautiful little bird. Very often choosing to inhabit urban areas, her choice of nest site will sometimes bring them into close proximity to people.

During a photography shoot in Hungary, we were lucky enough to have a pair nesting in an old barn, next to the villa where we were staying. The barn was being renovated & despite constant interruptions from the building works, the birds seemed undaunted, flying in over the builders heads to feed their young.

June 2017.

A short series on the female of the species.

In max cooling mode - beak and wings open. Day 23 above 100°/38°...

Isn't she just the cutest - female House Sparrow. In terms of numbers, it seems the boys way outnumber the girls in my back yard, and they all way outnumber the smattering of finches I get.

My Sibley guide describes the female as having a "plain drab crown" with a "dingy gray-brown" chest. "Plain", "drab" and "dingy"?? How dare they!
