Fighting White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Willacy County, Texas.
White-tailed Deer antlers are formidable weapons. Like curved scimitars with multiple protruding daggers, they have evolved to inflict grievous harm, even death. Bucks know this however, and will go to great lengths to avoid the need to use them. Prior to the rut, they spend much time sparring and sizing one another up, learning their place in the hierarchy of strength and skill. When the rut begins, they will remember these lessons and know which other bucks to avoid.
Occasionally, two bucks will find themselves in a situation where neither is willing to back down. Such was the case with these two, when a challenge approached a buck that was tending a group of does. They approached one another, ears laid back and hair ruffled, providing every opportunity for the other to back down. Neither did. The fight began slowly enough, with them lining their antlers up and gently pushing them together. But then, in an instant, that changed. They both lunged forward and their skulls slammed together with incredible force. The fight was on.

What I thought was a bit of debris on the back of the chair turned out to be a jumping spider. It patiently waited for me to grab my camera and tripod...and it made minor adjustments to its stance as I crossed my fingers, hoping for a clear image.
It was only later that I learned jumping spiders have the ability to jump 30 times the length of their own body. Yes, I'm glad this little dude/dudette didn't see me as a viable meal. Here's to appreciating all of unique things about the world in which we live.

I love to alter the context of presentation...to turn something that is intended to provide a sense of fun and happiness into a scene of harsh grittiness. Clowns seem so well suited to this purpose; and a damp and cloudy day at the fairgrounds greatly enhanced the somber atmosphere.

Taking Self portrait everyday for one year is easy, Much like climbing this rock all the way to the top. Taking a creative self portrait everyday for one year is more difficult than I thought, like keeping my balance on this rock. At first it appears easy, but when you look at the rock from all sides you realize it is only about six inches wide and slanted down toward the lake, oh yeah and it has the recent droppings from the great blue heron that was perched there as I was walking toward the area. So kudos to all those who have finished the project creatively. I hope the coming of spring, will add some opportunities for this project as I am running out of winter, no color, no leaves, ideas.
