Here's a cool photo I got with the Inspire on a surprise flight. I didn't expect to fly at this exact spot… we kind of randomly pulled over in the middle of the island and decided to take a flight. This was one of the only volcano views I got while there… I didn't get too close to them at all, and there weren't a lot of views I got from the roadside. So it was really cool to get up above the trees and get to see them like this.

Another day, another quad shot! They are becoming more and more regular, eh? I notice I have a different workflow for processing these shots. For example, usually, right after a flight I go back and dump all the photos into Lightroom. Then, almost IMMEDIATELY, I process all my favorite photos. I don't mess about.. leaving them in LR for days, months, or years, as I do with my other unprocessed photos. I am not sure why this is! Maybe there is an excitement factor or something.

Unfortunately, my Phantom 3 was out-of-commission when I went to Bali so I had to lug the big Inspire 3 out there… it's a bit of a pain to travel with and launch, but after its up, it flies beautifully. I had a strange problem because I had sort of a bum Apple Lightning cable to connect it to my iPad. I was getting the dreaded “No Connection” message… and I had no idea what was causing it. Only later when I tried a different cord did I realize the problem!

See that amazing white chapel down there? It's hard to tell from this angle, but the whole front part of it is glass and opens up onto the Balinese ocean. It was just remarkable inside! I only got in once to take photos, but I thought this perspective was especially interesting. I got this while I was with the Ritz-Carlton in Bali and taking a group of orphans around.

My whole life I've seen photos of rice fields and always wanted to see them in this terraced formation. I did see a few in China, but they were not even impressive enough for a photo. They were a bit dull, and not terraced, you know? But then I got to Bali and was able to see many of them… just as amazing as I have imagined. I understand the ones in the Philipines are even better, so I hope to see those some day too.

This was my first time ever to shoot these terraced rice fields. I saw a few in China, I guess, but they weren’t nearly this pretty. I thought shooting these would be easier than it was… I found a bit of difficulty in finding the best angles and compositions! I’ve heard some of the best rice fields and in the Philippines, so that’s definitely on my list!

Aren’t these all great shapes? Even though I was standing on the ground down there, I didn’t think it would look this cool. I was too busy trying to avoid those wires that are over the intersection that the electric buses use. I can’t imagine it would be a good move for the DJI to touch one of them!

I don't actually know the purpose of this circle. I don't think it's a helipad, but as you can see above, Kai and I definitely used it for one! :)

Here’s another quadcopter shot. Two days in a row for these! I also took this one with the DJI Inspire. You can see the road there on the right. This set of mountains is actually one of the lower parts of the Southern Alps, and this is the main road people use to drive from Christchurch down to Queenstown. I’ve been on it about 50 times now…and then when I flew the quadcopter up like this to get a shot, I was impressed by how much a few hundred vertical meters can affect the shot.

This is the result of a panorama I stitched together from a few photos I got from the air. I just used Photoshop for this… I usually use that for the small panoramas like this, but for major productions, I use Autopano, which generally seems to be better at stitching together complex things. But I do hate the interface in Autopano… it’s terrible!

This photo reminds me of bleached bones for some reason. It was one of those foggy, dreary days that you sometimes get in big cities. I usually like my cities to be colorful and full of life. If the colors aren't working out for you, just give them a little black-and-white treatment. I can even suggest my Lightroom Presets to help you out!

This photo still causes me a lot of heartache! It’s a “good” problem, technically, I suppose. The sunset was killer, as you can tell. I ended up taking about 200 photos. They were all just SLIGHTLY different from one another. Then when it came time to start processing them, I just couldn’t pick one. They all were really decent, and I was quite paralyzed. So then, I decided to edit like 10 of them. And they all came out a little different, but none stood out. I don’t know why this caused me so much angst, but I’m still feeling it now writing about it!

The test flight of a new UAV is an exciting time. Trying to make sure that you are operating correctly, making sure that everything works properly, it is good fun. This image was captured during my test flight of a DJI Inspire 1. The aircraft is just off the beach near the Sandridge Life Saving Club in Port Melbourne and is looking north east towards Melbourne CBD.
Image captured using a DJI Inspire 1, 1/1250th of a sec @f2.8, ISO100.
Image was processed using Adobe Lightroom 6 and Google’s Nik Collection Dfine 2.0, Viveza 2 Color Efex Pro 4.
