Awesome eyes.

This is Odin, a tiercel Peregrine Falcon and Maxine's new mate. He is young, dark and very handsome. And great news today they mated!! Horrah!! There is still chance for chicks this year.

Many thanks for the visits, faves and comments. Cheers

Brown Falcon

Falco berigora

Description: Brown Falcons are small to medium-sized raptors (birds of prey). The female is larger than the male. The Brown Falcon has a range of plumage colours, from very dark brown to light brown above and off-white below. Generally, the upperparts are dark brown and the underparts are pale buff or cream. The sides of the head are brown with a characteristic tear-stripe below the eye. Birds from the tropical north are very dark, with a paler face and undertail, while those from central Australia are paler all over. Younger birds resemble dark adults, but have less obvious barring on the tail, and a buff-yellow colour on the face, throat and nape of the neck.

Similar species: Paler birds may often be confused with a related raptor (bird of prey), the Nankeen Kestrel, F. cenchroides, which is quite a bit smaller and has a more rufous crown. Dark Brown Falcons may be mistaken for slightly larger Black Falcon, F. subniger. The Black Falcon has longer legs and lacks barring on the tail. The Black Falcon also appears sleeker in shape and movements.

Distribution: The Brown Falcon ranges throughout Australia, and north to New Guinea.

Habitat: The Brown Falcon is found in all but the densest forests and is locally common throughout its range. The preferred habitat is open grassland and agricultural areas, with scattered trees or structures such as telegraph poles which it uses for perching. Around outback towns, the birds become quite tame and will allow quite close approach. Birds may stay within the same areas throughout the year or may move around locally in response to changes in conditions. Paler birds are usually associated with inland areas, but all the colour varieties are fairly scattered throughout the range.

Feeding: Brown Falcons are usually seen alone, searching for food from an exposed perch. When prey is sighted, the bird swoops down and grasps it in its claws (talons), killing the prey with a bite to the spine. The powerful bill has specialised 'tomial' teeth and matching notches for this purpose. Less often the species will hunt by hovering or gliding over the ground, often at great heights. Brown Falcons feed on small mammals, insects, reptiles and, less often, small birds.

Breeding: The nest used by the Brown Falcon is normally an old nest from another hawk species, but the species may build its own stick nest in a tree. Occasionally birds nest in open tree hollows. Both sexes share the incubation of the eggs, and both care for the young, although the female performs the bulk of these duties, while the male supplies most of the food.

Calls: Normally silent at rest, but gives some cackling and screeching notes when in flight.

Minimum Size: 41cm

Maximum Size: 51cm

Average size: 46cm

Average weight: 530g

Breeding season: June to November in the south; November to April in the north.

Clutch Size: 2 to 6 (usually 3)

Incubation: 30 days

Nestling Period: 45 days

Photographed near Davenport, Washington. As is often the case the available perches and bird were on the wrong side of the road so lighting is poor. Photographed from inside my car. I saw this bird 4 times over a period of about 2 hours, twice perched on the same telephone pole as in this photo and twice in a dead tree by an abandoned house. It probably preferred the tree which was further from the road. This falcon was more tolerant of being photographed than most that I have seen.

Peregrine Falcon, Common Mynah

≠=======================≠

Only recently fledged, the young Falcon hasn't acquired aerial capture skills. It just enjoyed the fun of the chase.

But the Mynah is not taking any chances.

I callled it Mandrake, after the cartoon strip character, "Mandrake the Magician" who could get out of any trouble.

This Falcon has set up a terrrtory in the saltlbush and foliage along a beach area.

It gets to see a lot of passing traffic, so it not easily startled to flight.

I was lucky enough to be alerted to a few Karearea in Arthurs pass. I was told that there is a family but I only saw this one juvenile. Amazing birds!

Mother Peregrine Falcon teaching the juvenile to grab the prey in mid-air from her. Yikes, it looks like the youngster has not mastered the art of an elegant food transfer yet!

When the second Falcon flew in and landed, this one took to the air. I was a bit distracted by the second bird, so this one just about slipped out of frame.

In control, but working very hard to keep its direction in the blustery conditions.

It had swept up along a tree line and emerged into the open when I first spotted it

Brown Falcon (Falco berigora) being chased by two Australian Magpies, near Castlemaine, central Victoria, Australia. This is a fairy common sight whenever raptors encroach on Magpie or Raven territory. The Falcon may be flying low close to the grasses to make it harder for its pursuers to follow.

After the food exchange Sally came out in the open, about 15 mintues later.

She too was ready to sit quietly.

Interestingly enough her chest feathers are indented and it might be the result of an egg pouch, so perhaps somewhere in the treeline they do have family commitments.

It was a foggy day with poor visibility. The Falcon gave us plenty of time for good shots as it stayed on the ground for a long time. Then twice it took off going in a long circle as it climbed quite high in the sky and then attacked a flying pigeon missing both the times. Not sure what happened, but I left the place after the second failure.

Thanks in advance for your views / comments. Much appreciated.

This one still has evidence of a recent meal.

So, time to find a comfy branch, lift a leg up, and chill out while the meal digests.

No doubt something large had been enjoyed.

A new pair in a new location.

The male came in with the carcass of a Blue-tounged Lizard (?)

After a noisy chase up and down the treeline, the female returned with the carcass and headed to the nest location.

Unfortunatley its likely in a tree on private farm land, so have to wait to see what happens.

From a few weeks back before they fledged.

Lots of hard work needed to build up muscle in wings that will carry them for life.

Mum sits looking on approvingly.

Brown Falcon (Falco berigora) near Castlemaine, central Victoria, Australia. This image was taken with my new Canon R7 at 960 mm equivalent focal length (APS-C sensor). I am currently working through some issues with my Sigma 150-600 lens on this new body, but hopefully I can find a way around this with more testing. I'm really enjoying the greater reach over my R6, but the poorer ISO performance does take some getting used to.

Peregrine Falcons have gone “High Tec” in Winnipeg...this bird is carrying some extra baggage. We have a pretty good idea who it is (Spencer - Brandon Hatch 2013) but still needs to be confirmed by a band number.

Brandon hatch 2013 was part of a transmitter program to track their migration/movement.

Spencer was banded as a male and turns out he is a she...appears we made a mistake, hard to tell at 25 days old.

Hopefully will be able to get a positive ID soon ?

For me this has been an illusive species. I feel fortunate it held on it's power pole perch for a decent image. I was searching for snow geese when the opportunity presented itself. No snows were found; however, there were numerous Trumpeter Swans and hundreds to thousands of Mallards and Pintails. They were feeding in harvested grain fields which have just lost their snow cover. The spring migration is on. I wonder if the falcon was attracted to the large concentration of waterfowl. Do they follow the migrating flocks? This bird appears to have recently eaten with the blood on its breast, beak and forehead.

This falcon was flying so fast towards me that I was in a frantic rush. Hopefully, you enjoy what I got.

Ed R Levin county park, Milpitas

Yesterday was my first day out to visit the peregrine falcons this season. I had been there for a while with no sign of either parent, and surprisingly no cries for food from the nest. Just when I was about to give up, in flies Mom with a fresh kill for the babies....and she landed on driftwood right outside my car window! She looked as surprised as I was. She gave me a bit of a talking to for being in her space, pooped, then flew off to deliver the meal. She is one magnificent raptor!
