Isaac “Ikey” Solomon (1785–1850), an English criminal who became an extremely successful receiver of stolen property, is widely regarded as the model for the character Fagin in Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist.
After being tried at the Old Bailey in 1830 he was transported to Richmond Gaol in 1832.
Richmond Gaol was built over a period of 15 years, between 1825 and 1840. The oldest part of the complex is the 1825 building which not only provided night and day quarters for the prisoners, but also housed the Gaoler.
Over the years more buildings were added; the Gaoler’s house in 1834, the cookhouse, solitary confinement cells and women’s quarters in 1835 and the surrounding wall in 1840.
From 1877 until 1928 Richmond Gaol was utilised as the local lock-up and was then closed down. It opened again in the 1940s as an historic site and visitor attraction.

Long abandoned one room schoolhouse in southern Wisconsin. It was a family's home in later years, but now it is dying a slow death in the beautiful Wisconsin countryside.
I'm sure it made a difference in a lot of children's lives many years ago....
I shot this couple near the Ye Arrow pub in Rochester during the Dickens festival. They were well dressed for the occasion, and the image turned out perfectly from my perspective.

Thanks Eric (fearless fagin) for the beautiful & beautifully written testimonial. Eric was one of my very first contacts when no one knew me on Flickr. I feel so blessed to have wonderful contacts like him & each of you :-) I hope you like this :-)

1998 Action Man Camera Mission, 110 internal camera. Genuine Action Man 200 ISO film, expired 1/2001. 12 exposure cassette. This image is the only one out of roll one taken by the previous owner in England. The colour print film appears to be like Agfa 200 but it is not marked, other than made in the EEC. I don't know why the sky is good but the building is odd. I pulled the image back to b&w with none of its original colour.

The Prospect of Whitby (c.1520), give it a Google as it's history has been too colourful for me to include here. I first visited in 1975, taken there by my sister Sharon and her partner to this day, Steve. We had been to the theatre to see Ron Moody (Fagin in the 1968 version of Oliver Twist) in as I remember it, a one man show.
I had wanted to go to the cinema and was playing up and being a right pain in the neck as I had failed to get my own way !.
I remember there were more cobbled streets and warehouses in the area back then and for an 11yr old the streets were spooky and intimidating late at night.

The oak is a large tree, which can reach 30 to 40 meters high and which has a life span of over 500 years.
The fruits are the acorns, not the oak galls that appear here, which contrary to what people think are not fruits, but "a rounded excrescence" that is formed following the deposit in the branches of wasp eggs. The wasp develops and feeds inside the galls, where it will go through all phases until it becomes adult.
Today we go from the grandeur of the Great Northern Hotel to inner city Dublin with plenty of life and points of interest to ponder. Is that a "Fagins" of urchins on the left foreground? What do you call a group of urchins?
Apart from what to call the gaggle/huddle of "urban youth" on the left, with thanks especially to Niall McAuley, swordscookie, sharon.corbet, pellethepoet, O Mac and others, we learned a lot about Michael's Lane close to Christ Church in Dublin. We learned that this image was likely taken close to the end of the 19th or very early 20th century. When the lane was a particularly poverty stricken area - with between 3 and 4 families to each small house on the lane. The main profession (as seemingly evidenced by what we see hanging around - other than the kids) was that of "clothes broker". A trade also plied on nearby Winetavern St/Michael's Hill.
See the full set of comments for links, images and the 1914 inquiry into the conditions on the lane - published shortly before the area was redeveloped to more closely resemble how it appears today.

A child worker in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, look up into the sky through a tiny opening in the roof of his workplace, shocked at the size of the cloud that are developing outside.
Despite the situation improving slowly everyday, child workers are still a common sight in Bangladesh...and undeniable there are pros and cons to this scenario, the pros actually outweigh the cons because akin to Fagin, the leader of the pickpocket's in Oliver Twist, their "Mahajans" or "Godfathers" actually protect them from the clouds outside...of which there are plenty to go around :)
To celebrate the release of my latest article on Macfilos, I thought a festive image taken at the Dickens Festival would make a suitable way to kick off the Christmas period.

I’d all but given up with this week’s challenge. Then, on a woodland walk, I noticed an old man sat beside me, peering out from the moss on the roots of an upturned tree. I hope you can see him. I see Fagin wearing a wide-brimmed green felt hat.

Den of thieves
Shoot , she muttered, dead end.
Sure is creepy enough here, but that man at the service station had said that cutting through this east end alley would be the quickest way on foot….
It was a good thing that he noticed my engine leaking some fluid when I pulled up for gas..
He had offered to fix it for free while I was at the show…
Such a nice young man, even though I did not care much about all his tattoos….
Well I do not want to be late, should probably cut down this alleyway here.
Looks like people milling about, so it should be safe enough innit?
Safety in numbers, that’s what me Grams’ always sayin..
Perhaps one of em could show me the way? She thought cheerfully to erself as she turned and swished her way down the dimly lit alleyway with its shadowy figures inhabitants…
A few Minutes later.
She finally made it through, just around the corner they had said.
What a friendly lot, not atoll as scary as they had first looked. Hugs, admiration of her dress, excited to see her. She never usually received that much attention, not even at the pub, Poet and Peasant, were she would be heading later, after the show….
She looked back, they all seemed to have scurried off on their own business..
She had invited them to meet up later, she hoped they wo’od come.
With these thoughts meandering about, she turned the corner and swished off towards the city lights ahead…..
