The spotless F-units and business cars had departed Chicago earlier in the day and by mid-morning it was headed for Cincinnati on the New Castle District.

IFA F9 in a forest near a cutting area

Milwaukee Road F9 93C at Elgin, Illinois on March 7, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 93C was built in January 1954 (c/n 18754) as number 83C (second), renumbered to 126A (first), then 93C (second). Originally built as a freight locomotive, it was regeared in the late 1950's - early 1960's for passenger service and a Cummins diesel/generator set was installed to provide power for the Budd gallery cars in commuter service. Number 93C was sold to Chrome Crankshaft in October 1980 and scrapped..

Burlington Northern Railroad F9 768 at Clyde, Illinois on August 12, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as Northern Pacific F9 7007A (c/n 20324) on EMD Order 3181 in February 1955, later renumbered NP 6700C, and on March 2, 1970 became BN 9800, later still it became BN 768. As a 9800 series locomotive, it was equipped with a steam generator and was available for passenger duties, which became a moot point with the advent of Amtrak. It is seen here in it's final configuration as a freight locomotive, and likely on its last miles as records indicate it was retired in the month that I shot this photo. As an aside, I was a CB&Q fan, and none of the CB&Q F units made it into the BN merger, so I was quite surprised to see a F unit in the Chicago area. I shot a whole roll of film on this single locomotive.

A young lady posing with a small, streamlined saloon in the countryside. At first sight, the car appears to be a DKW F89. On closer inspection, the radiator grille and hubcaps identify it as the DKW's East German cousin, the IFA F9.

Reading & Northern F9 #270 idles at the R&N's Outer Station in North Reading PA, August 3, 2021.

Originally built in January 1952 for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad as their 937, the unit was part of the B&O's systemwide renumbering where diesel electrics received 4 digit numbers while the remaining steam roster received 3 digit numbers. The 937 became the 4581 in 1957. It was rebuilt by MK in 1980 for the Maryland Department Of Transportation becoming an F9PH and numbered 7181. Later in 1989 it was rebuilt again and renumbered to 81. By that time MDOT's rail commuter service had become part of the Mass Transit Administration who branded the service as MARC.

By the Fall of 1994 all of MARC's F units and E units were out of service, replaced by rebuilt GP40s. The 81 was sold to Rail Cruise America and became SLCC 1010 and later RPCX 1010 and operated out of St Louis Union Station on excursion trains. By 2007 the unit had been purchased by Norfolk Southern along with another former B&O/MARC F and 2 former CGW F3B units. The ABBA combo became the NS business train power painted in a Southern Railway inspired theme. The 101 was now NS 4070. By 2019 the 4070 had been renumbered again to 270. Within a year the entire four unit set was sold off with the R&N acquiring the 270 along with one B unit.
