Yes, there really was a Cascade green Burlington Northern No. 1. Before BN assigned No. 1 to an executive F9 (officially labeled F9-2) locomotive rebuilt in 1990, BN had a former Great Northern NW2 constructed in 1939, and rebuilt into a NW12 in 1975 numbered 1. In September 1984, the spiffy-looking switcher was located at Minneapolis Junction, Minnesota.
D&RGW GP40-2 No. 3104 had the honor of leading the Rio Grande Zephyr, train No. 18 through Price Canyon at Castle Gate, Utah on May 27, 1979. One of the regular F9B units was at Burnham shops in Denver for a rebuild and repaint.
For the first time since 2013, the NS OCS train made it into Florida. In this picture, the train is seen rounding the curve just south of the Crawford, Fl diamond, ducking under the southernmost ex-Southern RWY signal on the GS&F.

Taken on a wonderful sunny morning when for once, the weather turned out to be nicer than predicted.

I think this is the most detailed flight shot of a SB that I have managed to date. Using the 3 step principle I apply to much of my flying bird photography - get your settings right - then take an awful lot of shots - hope that one of them is in focus.
I do love shooting with the super light Nikon 400 / 4.5 - with a 2x teleconverter in good light the F9 aperture gives a nice DOF for this sort of subject. Plus I could commando crawl across the shingle holding it to get closer to the birds.
EMD F9A 975 along with EMD's Test car, a B unit, is on the Rio Grande coupled with three Rio Grande F7's eastbound between Brown Canon and Salida in 1953. Bob Konsbruck worked for EMD and was with the demo on its tour on the D&RGW. Original Kodachrome by the Late Bob Konsbruck, from my collection.
Burlington Northern F9 BN-1 was leading a joint BN/CSX business train from Chicago to Baltimore's Seagirt terminal in 1990.
At the time, the BN-1 was freshly rebuilt and painted and today it can be seen operating at the Illinois Railway Museum.
This is the other end of the Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad Santa train that was in the last photo. This is there EMD F9 in its Northern Pacific colors. DSC_0577-HDR-1
A classic winter scene featuring the Rio Grande Zephyr (Train Nos. 17 and 18) at the Glenwood Springs depot. Operated by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW), this train was a legendary holdout in American rail history. While most passenger services joined Amtrak in 1971, the D&RGW continued to operate the Zephyr independently until 1983, making it the last privately operated long-distance intercity passenger train in the United States.

Burlington Northern Railroad F9 BN-1 at Springfield, Missouri on May 13, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1954 as Northern Pacific F9 6700A ( c/n 19056 ) on EMD Order 3175A, it became BN 9800, and later demoted to freight service as 766, later still MOW service 972567. Around October 1990, it was outshopped at West Burlington, Iowa as BN-1, having exchanged it original 567 prime mover for a 645. The B-unit was former NP F9B 7002C, which also received a 645 prime mover, turning both units into GP38 equivalents.
Electro-Motive Division F9 462 at the CB&Q locomotive facility in Clyde, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 462 was built in December 1949 as C&NW F7 6501A ( c/n 8580 ) on EMD Order E1188, was retired by the C&NW on January 7, 1959 and traded back to EMD. It was rebuilt during May 1960 into a F9A ( new c/n, 26158, note there appears to be two builders plates ) on EMD Order E1188-A33R and used as a test unit for newly developed components. It is seen here equipped with a toe step between two CB&Q GP20's testing something.
A note from Ken Lanovich: EMD 462 was scrapped at Midwest Metalics ( Pielet Bros ) in 1998. They held it for some time, offers were made to buy it, but no group ever came up with the cash. The last offer was to buy the cab for a restaurant in downtown Chicago but that fell through. I remember pieces of it went to Larry's Truck Electric.( LTEX ) when the property was being cleaned up. Anybody need an F unit pilot? The 462's pilot and a brand new one from EMD went to LTEX when Midwest shut down.

Great Nebula in Carina
This is a bi-colour image of one of the largest diffuse nebulae in our skies. It is a spectacular object that is about four times as large and even brighter than the famous Orion Nebula. It is one of my favourite objects in the Southern Hemisphere. Near the centre of the image you will see a very bright hypergiant star - Eta Carinae. Its luminosity is about four million times that of the Sun. Within the large bright nebula is a much smaller feature, immediately surrounding Eta Carinae itself. This small nebula is known as the Homunculus Nebula. If you look carefully, you can see that this star is not round. This happened in enormous outburst in 1841.
