A performance of 'Eyton Road'. Directed by Talya Chalef. Performed by Talya Chalef and Andrew Grey. Infecting the City Festival 2009.

Eyton Races was held at Eyton-on-Severn in South Shropshire on Bank Holiday Monday 6/5/24. Racegoers were treated to a splendid day's steeple chasing at one of the UK's leading point-to-point courses. Three miles long and described as an 'old and very flat galloping course'.

I counted 12 fences with the final three close together and right in front of the bulk of spectators. The naming convention for the fences appears to be for two lengths, a shorter course with jumps 1 to 7 and the full course starting at “jump 1&13”.

The ground is well-drained and runs alongside the River Severn with excellent views across to the Wrekin and The Long Mynd. Punters can walk around the course where, from a safe distance, you get unimpeded views of the track and the fences. For more information, please see....

Believed to be a portable instrument on wheels or castors to enable it to be moved, which makes it unusual. The church guidebook mentions a tradition amongst those who repair organs to write in pencil on the internal casework an account of their work. Such 'inscriptions' were revealed during a 20th century refurbishment, but were difficult to decipher. Dates of “Sept 1862” and “August 1865” were clear as was “Regulate and tuned. Pedal repaired March 7th 1865” as well as “...of London South..” which is intriguing. The inscriptions also say “The organ moved out of gallery to bottom of the church January 1882”. The notes appear to suggest the organ was not newly built for the church, but came from somewhere else and may well have been a portable instrument for a country house. It now stands in a permanent position in the church after being moved from the west gallery.

St Catherine's church is sited in a rural location in a little hamlet 2 miles from the centre of Wellington in Shropshire. The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales Circa 1870 described it as such.... “Eyton-upon-the-Wild-Moors, a parish in the Wellington district, Salop; on the Shrewsbury canal, 2 ½ miles N of Wellington r. station. It has a post-office, of the name of Eyton, under Wellington, Salop. Acres, 1,038. Real property, £3,234. Pop., 451. Houses, 88. The property is divided among a few. Many of the inhabitants are employed in the manufacture of bar-iron. The living is a rectory, annexed to the vicarage of Wellington, in the diocese of Lichfield. The church is very good. Lord Herbert of Chirbury was a native. Source: The Imperial Gazetteer of England & Wales [Wilson, John M]. A. Fullarton & Co. N. d. c. [1870-72].”

St Catherine's is still an active church serving a small but thriving community with some members of the congregation coming from afar. For details of services and events, please see......
