Plastic - An interesting theme for this week's Macro Monday. I like plastic and as suggested, it wasn't too tough finding a worthy subject in the house. I had a few CD's lying around and thought it would be interesting if I could extract the data via some unconventional means. I chose a torch and applied a little heat to the underside of the CD. Before my eyes, the data started to emerge in the form of little bubbles and I knew I was on to something. For the shot, I added a little sunlight (fleeting sunlight I might add) and my trusty 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro with a PK-13, 27.5mm extension tube and it was done. Included in the experimentation was my 50mm Pentacon and various extension tube lengths. I liked this one the best but the bokeh of the Pentacon is very unique.

The bubbles don't really contain data but it seemed to fit so I went with it. You may think you're looking at a curved surface but its flat and looks just like a CD with one side melted a bit. Enjoy large.

Subject size: app. 3/4 in X 3/4 in.

Making donuts at home can be a delightful experience! Here's a basic recipe for classic fried donuts:

Essential Ingredients:

2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

1/4 cup warm water (110°F / 45°C)

3/4 cup lukewarm milk

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 large egg

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for rolling)

Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil)

For Glaze:

2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.

Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, lukewarm milk, sugar, salt, butter, and egg. Gradually add the flour and mix until a dough forms.

Knead: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Cut out donuts: Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter or two different-sized round cutters to cut out donuts and holes. Place them on a floured surface and let them rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.

Fry: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry donuts in batches, turning them once, until golden brown (1-2 minutes per side). Drain on paper towels.

Glaze: Mix the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and let them cool on a wire rack.

Enjoy your homemade donuts! 🍩

Eastern Spinebill

Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris

The Eastern Spinebill sometimes hovers like a hummingbird when feeding on the nectar from flowers. Most Australian honeyeaters feed on flowers from a perched position.

Description: The Eastern Spinebill is most easily recognised by its very long, fine, down-curved beak and energetic flight, during which its white outer tail feathers are prominent. Males have a grey-black crown which extends in a black line on either site of the breast. The breast and throat are white, with a rufous patch in the centre of the throat. The wings and lower back are dark grey and the underparts and upper back are buff. Females are similar to males but have less distinct markings.

Similar species: Crescent Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Western Spinebill (in Western Australia)

Distribution: The Eastern Spinebill's range is generally east of the Great Dividing Range from Cooktown in Queensland to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia

Habitat: The Eastern Spinebill prefers heath, forest and woodland.

Seasonal movements: Largely sedentary, but undergoes some local movements, especially away from higher elevations in autumn/winter.

Feeding: The Eastern Spinebill feeds on insects and nectar while perched or while hovering. Nectar is obtained from a wide array of flowers, including grevilleas, but its beak is particularly well-suited to extracting nectar from tubular flowers such as epacrids.

Breeding: The Eastern Spinebill's nest is a small cup of twigs, grass and bark, combined with hair and spider's web, built in a tree fork, generally between 1 and 5 metres from the ground. Only the female builds the nest and incubates the eggs, but both parents feed the young when they hatch.

Calls: Short, repeated, high-pitched piping.

Minimum Size: 15cm

Maximum Size: 16cm

Average size: 16cm

Average weight: 11g

Breeding season: August to January

Clutch Size: 2

Incubation: 14 days

Nestling Period: 14 days

Combed by the tide, this little patch of seaweed provided a visual puzzle for a while.

The Lake District is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells). It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. All the land in England higher than 3,000 feet (914 m) above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and largest natural lakes in England Wast Water and Windermere respectively.

A male Green Thorntail Hummingbird extracts nectar. This wide ranging hummingbird is small and will frequent feeders. There are many of these shimmering green hummingbirds at Rancho Naturalista, Costa Rica.

The extractor spins one way then the other to empty the honey from the cells in the frames. The honey goes into a sump, the wax is trapped in the first compartment and then honey collects in the next one until it is pumped out. We sell our honey but are not going to be well off any day soon 😊

An extract from this day's Journal entry:-

Checked out of the hotel this morning, first stop the Dinosaur Museum where we had a one hour guided tour. An interesting place, especially interested to see so many turtles who had obviously died together in the mud, some with their neck and head extended from under their shells. There were many excellent exhibits such as nests of dinosaur eggs and dinosaur babies, along with fossils and reconstructed skeletons.

Next we went to the State Department Store (GUM), bought food for the 24 hour train ride to Irkutsk. From there just a short walk to a Mongolian bbq restaurant where we arrived much too early for lunch. They weren’t ready for us and I wasn’t hungry. There was a good selection of thinly sliced meats (including horse), vegetables and sauces which we put in a bowl and took to a man at a big round hotplate. He cooked our food in a couple of minutes and returned it to us on a flat plate; delicious.

There were other cooked dishes to chose from as well, curries, rice dishes and sheeps heads among them. There was also a selection of sweets, three varieties of sorbet and cakes to finish the meal.

After lunch we rode to the station to wait for the train. We were a good hour early, no risk of missing the train. Said goodbye to Ganbaa, our Mongolian guide, sorry to see him go, a man named Zorek will accompany us to Irkutsk. Our train is an East German built set, old but sturdy, hauled by 3 Mongolian Railways locomotives. I am sharing a cabin with Zorek, a man named Tsange from Zimbabwe and his girlfriend Linda who is Anglo Chinese. Tsange and Linda are only travelling as far as Ulan Ude in Russia.

I can never resist FebRovery, and wasn’t going to let my tiny rover from the Astro Warden be my only contribution! This mining vehicle brought back lots of memories of playing with Power Miners and was a ton of fun to build. I managed to utilize some interesting yellow elements I’ve had around for a while along with the unusual sand blue technic column.

The saw arm can rotate 360° and extend or retract for mining or transit mode. The windscreen also opens, and the whole roof can be removed for easier access to the cabin.

its all about pollen gathering at this time of year as these two photos show only to well

By using a combination of a "detail extractor" and a "contrast only" filter in Color Efex Pro 4, I found the image had what could best be described as "drama." That's what this image in essence is about. I took several images while at this point just north of the Meeting-of-the-Waters Viewpoint. What I then noticed was just an amazing set of contrast that came out, especially in the rivers with the rapids and the trees with the various leaf colors. Then there was the mountainside and then the dark clouds above. With all that, contrast and drama just seem to be a way to entitle this image.

Doesn't happens often that I witnessed a Cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae) spreading his wings under the early morning sun. Usually I find them hanging quite low in the grass with their wings closed like a hiding batman.

With the harsh back light it was quite challenging getting the exposure right so I used a fill flash to extract some extra detail.

"The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things. "

Henry Ward Beecher

Common Things.... Like a walk in winter.... and, well, Like Cheesecake. Like cheesecake in the fridge at work. And people that tell you.... “Torrie, there’s cheesecake in the fridge!”

(hmmmm, cheesecake!) ... “and there’s raspberry syrup too!” (that’s it.... I’m in!!) Grabbing the cheesecake and putting it on a plate and hoping that

the person that I made a deal with after Christmas to slap any chocolate or cookies he sees me eating right out of my hand and I would do the same for him, doesn’t see me

with this cheesecake because it would break my heart to see it slapped to the floor... and I look up, and he is standing in the doorway.... (busted!) As he says, “Wow. You have some willpower.”

(oh crap!!) And I try to convince him to eat the other piece of cheesecake so I won’t look so bad.... but he refuses. (Darn.... he HAS willpower?!!!) And next time I look up, he’s eating a Funny Bone... and we

all agree that Funny Bones are the best snack cakes every made. Half an hour later, he’s sitting at my desk, eating the other piece of cheesecake.... smothered in raspberry sauce... and drops

a little bit of it on my plate. And we discuss the need for adventures... and other important things ...like what else the raspberry sauce is good on. And I admit, that I would happily eat that raspberry sauce without cheesecake, by the spoonful.

Not a thread of willpower anywhere. And that makes me very happy!
