Views from our Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise on the Black Cat!
Akaroa day two on our two day trip away to escape from the earthquake repair/paint on our house. May 23, 2012.
The cruise is packed with highlights including the rare, NZ native dolphin - the Hector's Dolphin, as well as penguins and other sea birds. And you'll see giant volcanic sea cliffs and hear about Akaroa's fascinating past. Cruises depart every day, weather permitting and we had a perfect day, just a little cool!
We did see the Hector's Dolphins, penguins, lots of sea birds and the giant volcanic sea cliffs.
This alley runs behind Queen Street West, between Beaconsfield and Northcote. Since the Drake Hotel opened all of the nearby alleys have been well painted. The building on the right is a discreet little complex of artist studios.

Six 'extinct' beers —whose recipes British beer historian Ron Pattinson researched in his new book, "The Homebrewer's Guide to Vintage Beer"— were brewed for a lecture by Pattinson by members of B.U.R.P. (Brewers United for Real Potables), the largest and oldest homebrew organization in the Washington, D.C.-area.

"Although it is a gloomy view to suppose that life will die out, sometimes when I contemplate the things that people do with their lives I think it is almost a consolation."
-Bertrand Russell

Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly coloured members of the parrot family.
Many macaws have vibrant plumage. The colouring is suited to life in Central and South American rain forests, with their green canopies and colourful fruits and flowers. The birds boast large, powerful beaks that easily crack nuts and seeds, while their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.
Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items. The birds sport graceful tails that are typically very long.
Macaws are intelligent, social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. Their loud calls, squawks, and screams echo through the forest canopy. Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another. Some species can even mimic human speech.
Flocks sleep in the trees at night, and in the morning they may fly long distances to feed on fruit, nuts, insects, and snails. Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.
Macaws typically mate for life. They not only breed with, but also share food with their mates and enjoy mutual grooming. In breeding season, mothers incubate eggs while fathers hunt and bring food back to the nest.
There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered. These playful birds are popular pets, and many are illegally trapped for that trade. The rain forest homes of many species are also disappearing at an alarming rate.
Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws are seriously endangered. The glaucus macaw and Spix's macaw may already be extinct in the wild.
Pinguinus impennis
Extinct since 1852
The great auk was a flightless bird species that went extinct in 1852. The bird resembled today's penguin, as they had a white belly and black back; however, they are not closely related. The bird fed on fish such as Atlantic menhaden and capelin as well as crustaceans. Auks were monogamous, and when they mated they kept their partner for life. The birds had a very low, coarse scream that could be very eerie to those who heard it. The species was a very valuable source of food to the Native Americans during the winter time. They also held cultural value, and the natives would construct necklaces from their bones, surrounding burial sites with hundreds of auk beaks.
During the 19th century, as people were moving to the “new found land,” the auks were over-hunted and they were easy to kill because they couldn’t move quickly on land and couldn’t fly away. Sailors would bring their ships to the shore and run a plank down to the ground, then the men would chase the great auks up the plank to the waiting sailors. Rats were also introduced to North America by the European settlers, and they preyed heavily on the large yolks of the auks’ eggs, all of these factoring together to lead to the bird’s extinction. Today there are regulations and limits to the amount of animals killed, and if a species is reduced below a healthy population number we have laws such as the Endangered Species Act or the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that protect species from extinction. These law are powerful and help our nation to preserve the habitat and species itself.

Gallery 224 at the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard is pleased to present an exhibition of work from Montana-based potter Julia Galloway's most recent body of work, The Endangered Species Project: New England. Galloway works from each state's official list of species identified as endangered, threatened or extinct. She has created a series of covered jars, one urn for each species, illustrating the smallest Agassiz Clam Shrimp to the largest Eastern Elk.
