This was taken on june 19, 2002 in Salem, MA. This train was used to transport chemicals to Eastman Kodak Co. in Peabody for making the gelatin for Kodak film. I used an old Kodak box camera in which I had taken the lens out and put it back in backwards. Shot on Ilford Pan F Plus film.
The extinct Dire wolf (Canis dirus) is the most common species of wolf found in the asphalt at Rancho La Brea. In this diorama, a complete Dire wolf skeleton is shown with an artist's conception of what the animal may have looked like in life.

From the American Museum of Natural History:
"Passenger Pigeons lived in the eastern United States from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, breeding in their northern habitats and wintering in the southern part of their range. They migrated across this range in numbers so huge that their flocks darkened the sky. A writer once described a migrating flock of the pigeons as "a column, eight or ten miles in length . . . resembling the windings of a vast and majestic river." In 1808 a single flock in Kentucky was estimated to contain over 2 billion birds. Today, in a stunning example of the human potential for destruction, the Passenger Pigeon is extinct.
During the years of westward expansion, enormous numbers of eastern chestnut and oak trees, the main source of food for the Passenger Pigeon, were cleared to make way for farms, homesteads, and towns. Moreover, the birds were believed to be a menace to crops, while they seemed to be an inexhaustible supply of food for both people and their pigs. With the extension of the railroad in the 1850s, the pigeons could be easily shipped to city markets, increasing the numbers in which they were hunted. The combination of all these factors wiped out the Passenger Pigeon. The last one, which lived in the Cincinnati Zoological Garden, died on September 1, 1914."
This specimen was photographed from a recently unearthed collection that originated circa 1850 in central Massachusetts.

For the Scavenge Challenge -- #16 "Old-style telephones are becoming uncommon. No cell phones allowed here!"
I am pretty sure this is the very last pay phone left in our area. Not just in the city, but in the surrounding smaller towns, too. It's crazy! I remember when I had to walk to the convenience store after the movies to call my dad to come and pick me up. If only that option were available now and there weren't fifty kids in the theater playing with cell phones now! I feel so old!
Great Auk (Alca impennis) a stuffed specimen preserved at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. The bird was collected off the south coast of Iceland in 1821 shortly before the species became extinct in 1844. The egg is a mimmic.

Another Sunday of work, dissertattion, group work, and more.
This is my old gorillapod, which broke about a month ago. It was odd really, the legs just fell off one day, without me doing anyting at all to them, let along anything strenuous. We discovered that if you try, you can pop the little joints apart, and we've been using it as a building toy ever since.

A 40 minute drive away from Beirut into the mountains brought us to a nice village with numerous outdoor restaurants. As we were walking we found a cameleon that had been run over by a car. Cameleons are close to extinction in Lebanon and the site was disheartening.

During one of my many trips to my father's native land, the Historic City of Laguna, in Santa Catarina.
" City of memorable events in the history of Santa Catarina, also became the capital of the Julian Republic (after and before the extinct state called Santa Catarina Province), hometown of Anita Garibaldi, the famous Heroine of Two Worlds. It was formerly called Laguna de los Patos or Lagoon of the Patos, name that is attributed to the Spanish settlers of the whole coast, Santo Antônio dos Anjos de la Laguna (patron), denomination granted by Domingos de Brito Peixoto, who founded the city in 1676, and then reduced to Laguna these days.
Home to a series of natural spas and lagoons, registered by IPHAN (Institute of National Historic and Artistic Heritage), with six hundred properties, it is the most important tourist center in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, located in the South Region of the largest southern country American in territorial extension.
