This shot was captured the same day as the previous upload (the Trillium closeup). Perhaps it will help put that flower, which was among those shown in the clump to the right of the road, into context for you.

Spoonbill - Platalea leucorodia

Spoonbills are tall white waterbirds with long spatulate black bills and long black legs. In flight they fly with necks and legs extended, in the water they feed with elegant sideward sweeps of their bill. In the breeding season adults show some yellow on their breast and bill tip. The species is of European conservation concern and a very rare breeding bird in the UK. They are listed are listed on Schedule 1 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act. Most birds migrate south in the winter, but numerous individuals remain and winter in Western Europe.

Although they bred in East Anglia during Medieval times, spoonbills had not bred in Britain for over 300 years until 2010, when a small colony was discovered on the north Norfolk coast.

The oystercatcher is a large, stocky, black and white wading bird. It has a long, orange-red bill and reddish-pink legs. In flight it shows a wide, white wing-stripe, a black tail and a white rump that extends as a 'V' between the wings.

Because it eats cockles, the population is vulnerable if cockle beds are overexploited.

They breed on almost all UK coasts. During the last 50 years, more birds have started breeding inland. Most UK birds spend the winter on the coast where they are joined on the east coast by birds from Norway.

In the UK, Isle of Man, and Ireland, the Oystercatcher is resident in most coastal areas. It has an "Amber" status because it is considered Vulnerable in Europe and Near Threatened globally.

Exactly 3 years ago today, on an extended photo tour at home, I passed the railway line between Koblenz and Trier, where the sun was just fighting through the fog.

Berzé-le-Châtel at the end of the Val Lamartinien is a stunning medieval fortress built from the 10th century, superbly preserved, and with magnificent gardens.

From the top of its ramparts, the view extends over the entire Val Lamartinien practically as far as Mâcon, and the Roches de Solutré and Vergisson stand out in the distance.

Notre-Dame de Paris is a masterpiece of Gothic art.

The building of Notre-Dame extended over 150 years, during which all the various phases of Gothic architecture were reflected in its structure (from the great cathedrals of Chartres, Reims, and Amiens).

The interior exemplifies the grandeur of Gothic architecture with its space. It is 420 foot long, 157 foot wide and 226

foot high.

The ceiling is supported by ridged vaults, with multiple arches that come together at various points across the length of the building, covering more than 130 metres altogether.

The June full moon is sometimes called the Strawberry moon, according to the Farmer's Almanac, which says the nickname is connected to strawberries ripening in certain parts of North America. It's not a reference to the colour of the moon. However, you may still get lucky with the moon's hue. Towards the end of June, the moon usually sits in a lower position in the sky and shines through more of our atmosphere. Because of this, our moon can sometimes give off a pinkish hue. 63954

The Photograph is an extended, loaded evidence — as if it caricatured not the figure of what it represents (quite the converse) but its very existence ... The Photograph then becomes a bizarre medium, a new form of hallucination: false on the level of perception, true on the level of time: a temporal hallucination, so to speak, a modest, shared hallucination (on the one hand 'it is not there,' on the other 'but it has indeed been'): a mad image, chafed by reality.

In the female, the red on the head does not extend beyond the eye as it does in this bird. The species breeds from Europe to North Africa and Central Asia.

he Southern Alps is a mountain range extending along much of the length of New Zealand's South Island, reaching its greatest elevations near the range's western side. The name "Southern Alps" generally refers to the entire range, although separate names are given to many of the smaller ranges that form part of it.

Due to my health condition, I am unable to hold or stabilize a camera for extended periods of time. Additionally, using a tripod has never been enjoyable for me, as it would cause pain when trying to position it correctly and constantly bending over to check the viewfinder. Consequently, I have chosen to explore digital AI artwork as an alternative. I understand that this may not be everyone's cup of tea, as it diverges from traditional photography. However, I have always granted myself the freedom to exercise artistic license and pursue whatever brings me joy. Currently, digital AI artwork fulfills that purpose, at least for the time being.

This is the beautiful light show in Paso Robles by the artist Bruce Munro. I really, really liked it. It's extended until June 2020 due to it's popularity.

SOUTH AFRICA( South-Africa), KLeine Karoo, direction Oudtshoorn.

The name Karoo comes from kurú in the language of the San, who once lived and hunted here. In their language, this word means "dry, arid, stony land".

Great and Little Karoo

The Great Karoo has a west-east extension of over 750 kilometers and a north-south extension of around 110 kilometers. It is bordered to the west by the Cedar Mountains massif and to the east by the Winter Mountains. In the north, the Roggeveldberge, Komsberg, Nuweveldberge and Sneeuberg mountain ranges and in the south the Witteberge, Groot Swartberge and Groot Winterhoek form the natural boundary.

South of this region, bordered by the Swartberge in the north, the Little Karoo extends in a clearing basin. This in turn is bordered on its southern flank by the coastal Langeberge and Outeniqua Mountains.

We are not held back by the love we didn't receive in the past, but by the love we're not extending in the present. Marianne Williamson

Strong nor'easter winds drove out the river the other day and ended with a pretty sunset.

A view taken further back from the falls is sometimes a better option.

DESCRIPTION:

When we take a picture during a sunset , usually we are attracted by the bright colors we see in the west and rarely point the camera in the opposite direction, towards the east. Yet, if the condition are favorable (clear and transparent sky ) the show we would see would be just as beautiful. This photo, taken by Acireale, a city of Sicily located on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea , wants to be a testimony. The color element that dominates and characterizes it is the pink band extended for about 20 degrees above the horizon, known as “ the belt of Venus”.

The belt of Venus is an atmospheric phenomenon due to backscattering of the red sunlight at sunset by the particles of the atmosphere that are on the opposite side of the sun.

Near the horizon, due to the shadow projected by the Earth, the belt progressively decreases in brightness and color until it disappears completely.

The phenomenon lasts a few minutes and is visible even at down, just before sunrise.

This must have been a serious problem to have been stencilled on the side of the aircraft. It was bad enough to lose your life as the result of enemy action or mechanical failure, but from forgetting to turn your oxygen on was at least an avoidable hazard of war.

I apologize for the long absence. Turns out, flickr is inaccessible in China. Who knew?

A perfect day of 80F/26C and not a cloud in the sky had me out in the canoe for an extended period yesterday, a portion of which had me gazing at eagles who apparently considered it lovely as well. While I can't say I'm a big fan of the feeding habits of these raptors, opportunistic feeders and scavengers who are known to prey on the eggs and young of other species (including my loons), I admit to feeling a distinct sense of awe in just looking at the size of them. They certainly create a presence.

While I often see individuals perched in spots around the lake, it is rare to see them playing as they seemed to be yesterday, alternately swooping and soaring in an acrobatic aerial display. Far above the adults, a youngster viewed the scene from altitude. The first comment photo catches a bit of this, and suggests their size in relation to fully grown shoreline trees. The second comment photo shows an individual just taking its leave upon my approach... probably as close as I've gotten. The lead photo is a more stylized (artsy) image of the departure, chosen as the feature specifically for the composition All obviously have a texture applied to give some interest to the "bluebird" sky.

The display of the eagles (and now the osprey) is one of the few times that I truly wish I had a better camera...but that would mean I would have to learn how to use it...;-) However, with all the mediocre to bad eagle shots I have in my archives, it would be nice to have a series of good ones...for their sake as well as mine.
