KRUGER NATIONAL PARK is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 km2 in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 km from north to south and 65 km from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926. To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere an area designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the "Biosphere"). The park has nine main gates allowing entrance to the different camps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruger_National_Park

The winter heat wave continued here in the Driftless Region today as we topped 50 F yet again. This extended stretch of hot January weather here has never happened before and I'm betting this black-capped chickadee thinks it's spring!
(Melanerpes carolinus, of the Picidae family) You can tell it is a male due to bright red colour on his crown extending down his nape. There is also a faded red marking on his belly. He is a medium size WP, with a length of 9-10 inches, and a wingspan of 15-18 inches.
Their diet includes bugs, insects, seeds, acorns, nuts, berries, and at times nestling baby birds.
He is a frequent guest in my backyard. And has a big appetite!
We spent an extended weekend in the Eastern Sierra mountains to see the fall colors. On the first day we went to see the tufa at Mono Lake - no fall colors there, nevertheless an interesting spectacle of nature in the late afternoon. It was quite windy, and there were considerable waves - the long exposure conveys the timeless nature this scenery.
Tufa are limestone towers, formed when carbonate minerals precipitate out of underground spring water entering the very salty water of Mono Lake. The lake level dropped, and we can see now the tufa above the lake.
I processed a balanced, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive feedback.

Cobá is a large ruined city of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization, located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is located about 90 km east of the Maya site of Chichen Itza, about 40 km west of the Caribbean Sea, and 44 km northwest of the site of Tulum, with which it is connected by a modern road.
Nohuch Mul pyramid at Coba.
Coba is estimated to have had some 50,000 inhabitants (and possibly significantly more) at its peak of civilization, and the built up area extends over some 80 km². The site was occupied by a sizable agricultural population by the 1st century. The bulk of Coba's major construction seems to have been made in the middle and late Classic period, about 500 to 900, with most of the dated hieroglypic inscriptions from the 7th century. However Coba remained an important site in the Post-Classic era and new temples were built and old ones kept in repair until at least the 14th century, possibly as late as the arrival of the Spanish.

Extended winter walk through the snow-covered village of my childhood. Here I grew up ...on these meadows I picked my first flowers ... here I romped around with our dog. Memories that never pass away.
I recently posted a photo of what I believed to be a Spanish Sparrow only to find that it was infact an Italian Sparrow a bird that is just starting to make its presence known on the islands of Malta.
Having learnt of my error, here is correctly identified Spanish Sparrow. Those dark streaks on the chest and stomach extend all the way from the bib unlike on the Italian Species.
This was the last photo I took on holiday before dropping my camera.

Just returned from an extended trip to the desert. Although I have been to a desert in the SW of the US at least 25 times , this one was special. We experienced fog and millions of flowers in addition to the heat , the cold , the wind and all the beauty it usually presents. This was an early morning shot in the Coachella Valley.

Igniting throughout her soul and mind, the fire spread uncontrollably causing her to drop down on one knee, completely out of her control. Screams of pain, loud heartbeat and excruciating accusations all in her own voice full of blame, hatred and distaste.
It was getting harder to lift herself back up. How much she wanted to be able to look at the sky again, follow dreams that were lost behind her and detach herself from being bound by what she shouldn't any longer. Mistakes are redundant and repetitive. Disguised in the form of excuses and self inflicted obligations. For the greater cause? Or just for her own demise? Wilting away countless images until it is left at the foot of being just an 'idea', never a reality.
"Get up!" said a voice. much to her surprise. With barely any strength left, she focused on that voice, the one that seemed to grow louder and louder compared to the rest.
"You came this far, no giving up now.." the voice continued. "This is just the beginning!" it shouted even more in a sheer determined encouragement.
The burning sensation through her self shifted into the air around her that just made her exhale a breath. A sudden drop of water was felt on the back of her neck, followed by more drops as the rain broke whatever the fire was doing inside of her. The smell of fresh soil danced along her senses, the heavy weight slowly lifted from her back.
The shattering of something inside her gave birth to a new horizon, gave reason to move on and it was oddly not that difficult to...spread her wings.

Dear friends,
I apologize for not having shared any new photos in quite some time. Unfortunately, a series of challenges arose, leaving me with no time for photography. Currently, my country is under attack by Russia, and the circumstances are dire. My family and I are hoping to survive through these trying times.
I extend my wishes for peace to everyone.
Warmest regards,

Pelicans are large, bulky waterbirds with webbed feet, short legs, and a remarkably long bill. The underside of their bills extends into a pouch that can hold 2-3 gallons of water at a time, used to trap fish. When hunting, they spot their prey from the air and plunge into the water head-first. After trapping the fish, they drain the water out the sides of the bill, and then swallow the fish whole. Brown pelicans incubate their eggs with their feet, essentially standing on them to keep them warm. Unfortunately, the use of the pesticide DDT caused brown pelican numbers to plummet during the 20th century. Much like the decline of the bald eagle, DDT thinned the pelicans’ egg shells, causing them to break during incubation. After DDT use was banned, brown pelican numbers slowly recovered and they were officially removed from the federal endangered species list in 1985. The National Aviary is home to two brown pelicans, Ralph and Dexter. They were both injured in the wild and are unable to be released. The Brown Pelican is one of only three pelican species found in the Western Hemisphere, and one of only two pelican species which feed by diving directly down into the water.

The brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a North American bird of the pelican family, Pelecanidae. It is one of three pelican species found in the Americas and one of only two that feeds by diving in water. It is found on the Atlantic Coast from Nova Scotia to the mouth of the Amazon River, and along the Pacific Coast from British Columbia to northern Chile, including the Galapagos Islands. The nominate subspecies in its breeding plumage has a white head with a yellowish wash on the crown. The nape and neck are dark maroon–brown. The upper sides of the neck have white lines along the base of the gular pouch, and the lower foreneck has a pale yellowish patch. The male and female are similar, but the female is slightly smaller. The non-breeding adult has a white head and neck. The pink skin around the eyes becomes dull and gray in the non-breeding season. It lacks any red hue, and the pouch is strongly olivaceous ochre tinged and the legs are olivaceous gray to blackish-gray. The brown pelican mainly feeds on fish, but occasionally eats amphibians, crustaceans, and the eggs and nestlings of birds. It nests in colonies in secluded areas, often on islands, vegetated land among sand dunes, thickets of shrubs and trees, and mangroves. Females lay two to three oval, chalky white eggs. Incubation takes 28 to 30 days with both sexes sharing duties. The newly hatched chicks are pink, turning gray or black within 4 to 14 days. It takes about 63 days for chicks to fledge. Six to nine weeks after hatching, the juveniles leave the nest, and gather into small groups known as pods. The brown pelican is the national bird of Saint Martin, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the official state bird of Louisiana. In 1902, it was made a part of the official Louisiana seal and, in 1912, a pelican and her young became part of the Flag of Louisiana as well. It has been rated as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It was listed under the United States Endangered Species Act from 1970 to 2009, as pesticides like dieldrin and DDT threatened its future in the southeastern United States and California. In 1972, the use of DDT was banned in Florida, followed by the rest of the United States. Since then, the brown pelican's population has increased. In 1903, Theodore Roosevelt set aside the first National Wildlife Refuge, Florida's Pelican Island, in order to protect the species from hunters.

The National Aviary, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the only independent indoor nonprofit aviary in the United States. It is also the country's largest aviary, and the only accorded honorary "National" status by the United States Congress. The aviary is home to over 500 birds representing more than 150 species, and is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

The origin of the Palace of Charles V is due to the need for a place that would meet all the comforts of the time for the emperor and his family, as the Alcazar, which was his summer residence, did not meet their needs.
The emperor ordered the construction of the palace next to the Alhambra so that he could enjoy its wonders. The architect in charge of the work was Pedro Machuca, a Renaissance lover of proven experience. The construction of the palace began in 1527 and was fully financed in 1957. The construction went through several stages, lack of funds, uprisings that stopped the works, and so on. The roofs even collapsed due to neglect.
The palace is square, with a main façade measuring 63 metres wide by 17 metres high. The circular courtyard in the centre is unique in its style and the most outstanding work of the Renaissance in Spain. Only the south and west façades are decorated in their entirety. The north and east façades are only partially decorated, due to the fact that the building is linked to the Alcazar of the Alhambra.
The building, made of stone, is square and measures 63 m. long and 17.40 m. high on the main façades, with a circular courtyard inside, which makes for a strange floor plan that is difficult to make use of, with no precedents ever built. The building consists of two sections: the lower section is of Tuscan order, with cushioned brickwork, with ashlars and very protruding pilasters in which large bronze rings are inserted for tying up the horses. Rectangular windows open in the spaces between the pilasters and, above them, other circular windows (recently glazed), with a wide base along this body forming the base of the palace.
The second section has a similar arrangement of openings and pilasters, although it is much more ornamented and, below the circular windows, there are balconies with ornate lintels. The pilasters are Ionic, supported by a Corinthian entablature.
The central part of the two main façades are occupied by magnificent Sierra Elvira marble façades, which are among the most beautiful of the Spanish Renaissance. The façade on the western side, which is considered the main entrance to the palace, is of Doric order, with four groups of double fluted columns, whose bases and capitals are beautifully ornamented. Three doors open between the columns. The central door, which is large, supports a statue of a woman holding a symbolic pomegranate in one hand and extending the other in a pointing gesture, as if making the offering of the palace to the Emperor. The other two gates are smaller and are decorated with groups of fruit on corbels and medals on their tympani.
The lower part of the doorway on the south (facing the Tower of Justice) is Ionic; the pedestals that extend to the sides to support two lions lying on their bases have bas-reliefs with Roman, Arab, Turkish and Christian war trophies; the doorway has a cornice and pediment with a relief of Abundance on its tympanum and, above it, winged figures of Fame and Victory offering crowns to the victor and accompanied by small genii. The second body of this doorway is Corinthian, and its double columns are supported by pedestals with reliefs that form a balcony.
Above these doorways are medallions framed in serpentine stone.
The high courtyard is one of the most beautiful creations of the Renaissance for its grandeur and sumptuousness. Its wide circle, 30 m in diameter, occupies the centre of the building and is surrounded by a wide portico with 32 Doric columns. The columns, made of pudinga stone from El Turro (Loja), correspond to as many pilasters that decorate the cloister wall, between which are arches, niches and doors to

Waimea Valley
"Red, Sacred Freshwater
Wai (freshwater) was central to the ancient Hawaiian system of land division into ahupua' a, parcels extending from uka (uplands) to kai (sea).
Kane, the greatest of the Hawaiian gods, created water, a sacred life force originating from the sky in the form of rain, the true beginning of an ahupua' a.
Each ahupua' a required a source of freshwater (stream, river, or spring) to anchor its community and help define its outer boundaries. A wailele (waterfall) often marked the start of the uka zone within an ahupua' a.
The name Waimea means "reddish water." High levels of iron oxide give Hawaii's rich volcanic soil its red hue; heavy rains deposit these sediments into streams and wailele. Believing it to have powers of healing, injured or sick Hawaiians would bathe in reddish water (and would sit in such waters even when they didn't run red).
The wailele here at Waimea Valley has two names, based on its flow: Waihe'e (slippery or trickling water) when flowing gently, and Waihi (purging water), for a strong, heavy flow."

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains, also called the Elbe sandstone highlands is a mountain range straddling the border between the state of Saxony in southeastern Germany and the North Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, with about three-quarters of the area lying on the German side. The German part is also referred to as Saxon Switzerland. In both countries, the mountain range has been declared a national park. The name derives from the sandstone which was carved by erosion. The river Elbe breaks through the mountain range in a steep and narrow valley.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains extend on both sides of the Elbe from the Saxon town of Pirna in the northwest toward Bohemian Děčín in the southeast. Their highest peak with 723 m (2,372 ft) is the Děčínský Sněžník in Bohemian Switzerland.
