Scottish Motor Traction Co. Ltd, the Edinburgh based bus and coach operator usually known as SMT, was nationalised in 1949. It had been operating express services between Edinburgh and London since 1930. The new nationalised company became Scottish Omnibuses Ltd. Note that in this year departures for these services were now using stances in Queen Street - previously, The Mound and Waverley Bridge had also been used. It would be April 1957 before the first bus station opened at Saint Andrew Square. This advertisement appeared in the pocket Murray’s ABC Time Table for Edinburgh and East of Scotland ( a train timetable).

You though you'd caught them all? - it says on the side. I must have a fair few of the National Express Coventry fleet in photographs now! (certainly the double decks). ADL Enviro 400 4888 (BX13 JVD) covers for a blue-liveried 47xx example on service 12X along the Warwick Road.

Without doubt, a British coach which broke the styling mould. Willowbrook bodywork was more traditionally associated with buses, though this foray into coaches during the mid seventies was certainly ground breaking. However euphoria was short lived as their standard of construction was found wanting. The 008 Spacecar suffered from excessive dependency of fibreglass and light gauge metals. Even the parcel racks which ran the length of the saloon were a fibreglass moulding with no padding. The wood grain laminates everywhere else were thin and flimsy, chipping and breaking with ease. Not unreasonably, their first life, as here with National Travel South East, was short lived. During the time which I was an operator, I had the pleasure of running the previously numerically registered coach LYU 564P until we could take the self destructing bodywork no longer. That said, it was the fastest and most powerful AEC Reliance I've ever driven. From memory, this picture was taken at Rothersthorpe Services on the M1 in the Autumn of 1975 when 565 was new.

Two pristine National Travel (South West) Leyland Leopards with Plaxton Supreme IV bodies contrast with a somewhat grungy looking Cardiff Bus Station, they're bound for far away places, KAD 349V on the left is on a Paris working. As I've mentioned previously, this location, on all my visits seems to be in a constant state of flux, something is always being demolished, lifted or paved.

A New York MTA Express service bus (No. 3243 on route BM3) - is about as much as I know regards this vehicle! And that is definitely the Brooklyn Bridge behind, with Chinatown not too far from here - you don't get that sort of view in my neck of the woods (Coventry, UK). Alas, I didn't pay this visit in April 2014 - but relatives went and took this scene.
