Da var nordlyssesongen 2015-2016 i gang. Rundt midnatt var jeg ute og sjekket, før jeg gikk i seng, og oppdaget av noen var på gang. Fikk ikke tid til å dra ut og tok bildene fra hustaket mitt. Et flott og klart nordlys som varte en god stund.
The Aurora season 2015-2016 has started. Beautiful and strong Aurora last night. Visible and very clear for a long time over my home community Sjoevegan. This is a promising start on the Aurora season.
Usually I don't like layovers, but this one was actually planned. It had been a while since I visited Vienna, and my camera had never been there, so I knew I just had to take this opportunity. What could have been a 2 hour stint at the airport turned into an overnight stay after a short phone call. A hotel was easy to find, turns out that a global lockdown does have some advantages...
Normally there is a special airport train, the CAT, that takes you directly into the city centre, but as with many services during a pandemic, this one was also not running. Turns out the entire public transport system in and around Vienna is very good, and 45 minutes later me and my camera arrived safely at our hotel.
As Vienna has many worthwhile tourist spots, it was quite difficult deciding where I wanted to spend my evening. I ended up choosing the Schönbrunn Palace, one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historic monuments in the country, and certainly one of the most beautiful.
After I arrived on site, and had explored the castle and the surrounding gardens (which are stunning by the way!) I settled on the Gloriette on top of the hill behind the palace.
From here you have a magnificent view in all directions, and the city is laid out beautifully behind the palace. My favorite view is to the north-east though, where you look straight through the forest to see the old city center with all its incredible churches and domes.
As is starting to get normal for me, the weather did not play it's part, there was not a single cloud in the sky, so the sunset I had hoped to capture didn't happen. But I still think I managed to take a nice snapshot of the gloriette and I am very happy to be able to share this image.
