Its banks are lined with parks, trails, and recreational areas perfect for walking and cycling. It is a hub for water activities such as kayaking, rowing, and scenic cruises. Iconic landmarks like Federation Square, Crown Casino, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground are situated along its course. The Carlo Catani Memorial Clock Tower, unveiled in 1932, stands prominently on the Upper Esplanade in St Kilda. It was erected by the residents of St Kilda to honour Carlo Catani (1852-1918), a highly respected Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department. Catani was instrumental in the beautification and reclamation of the St Kilda foreshore, a lasting legacy. Designed by Geelong architect Norman Schefferle, the tower features an Italian Renaissance style. At its base, a bronze bust by sculptor Paul Montford further commemorates Catani's contributions. The tower replaced an old band rotunda, becoming an immediate and beloved landmark. It serves as a constant reminder of Catani's vision for St Kilda's beloved public spaces. The clock tower's elegant design and historical significance make it a cherished part of the St Kilda landscape.
Originally named "sow and piglets" by George Bass in 1798, they were renamed the apostles in the 1920's for marketing purposes. The name then evolved to the twelve apostles (even though there was only nine). Now due to erosion only seven remain.
