Green, European anti-nuclear bus to Brussels for a nuclear-free Europe

The idea behind the “Green Bus” is to promote and to strengthen antinuclear and pro-green-energy/pro-energy-democracy civic and political movements in Poland, Belarus, Estonia, Kaliningrad, Latvia and Lithuania.
The bus was realised through networking and cooperation between green parties, green think-tanks, green youth organizations and civic movements from the countries of the Baltic coast.
The final destination of the bus was Brussels where the participants met with the Green Group in the European Parliament and other Green Family members: GEF, HBF, EGP, FYEG.
The Green Bus Project has at least double meaning for anti-nuclear action.
First of all it has a European dimension in skills and knowledge transfer for all regions struggling with the national nuclear programs and promoting green solutions.
Secondly it is a strong tool helping to develop and strengthen cooperation and network oriented actions both in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic Sea and at the EU level.

In April 2014, four influential Pakistani leaders visited Washington, DC, to highlight the role of women in moderating violent extremism. The delegation included two parliamentarians: Shaista Pervaiz, leader of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus; and Senator Nuzhat Sadiq, head of the women’s wing of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
And two leaders from civil society: Huma Chughtai, an expert in Sharia law who has increased the number of female officers in Pakistan’s police force; and Mossarat Qadeem, who has helped hundreds of young men escape Taliban recruitment.
This unique group unites women from different sectors of Pakistani society and diverse regions, including those most directly affected by conflict.
Population size
The Short-eared Owl is largely nocturnal and crepuscular (dusk and dawn), but it is still one of the most active British owls during daylight3. However, despite this (and its charismatic appeal) current breeding numbers are poorly known. Surveys can reliably detect pairs that have successfully hatched young and are busy feeding their chicks but adults that have not nested or whose nests have failed can easily go unnoticed1.
An estimate of the Scottish population suggested 780 - 2,700 breeding pairs (1,000 - 3,500 pairs for the UK in the late 90’s) although this is thought to be one the most unreliable estimates for any raptor or owl species7. A more recent estimate for Britain is 610 to 2,140 pairs – again, note the broad range9. Some experts consider the lower end of these ranges to be the more likely and are concerned that the species may have shown marked declines during the past two decades.
Breeding numbers fluctuate markedly in response to prey availability(10, 13), however, and the birds are believed to range quite widely. These factors have doubtless added to the difficulty in assessing their breeding numbers and estimating population trends.

Habitat use
In Scotland, most of our breeding Short-eared Owls are found in moorland. The highest densities are found in areas of mixed rough grasslands and heather moors (marginal hill ground or ‘white moor’). A typical home range is around 200 hectares (~300 football pitches) and it seems that a variety of grassland types and heights within range is beneficial. However, territory sizes vary considerably, ranging from 40 to 875 hectares (~56 to 1,200 football pitches).
Young conifer plantations can also be important habitats, though second and later rotation plantings may be less frequently used. Lowland rough grassland, marshes and coastal sand dunes are also sometimes used for breeding though their use of these areas can be erratic (except on some of the western islands and Orkney).
Elsewhere in Europe, breeding Short-eared Owls can sometimes be found in relatively intensive agricultural areas including cereal crops, meadows and rye grass fields. This difference probably reflects the availability of different prey to that found in Britain. Here they feed mostly on Short-tailed Field Voles. Interesting, they can adapt to life where these are absent or where alternative prey is available. On Orkney, for example, they feed predominantly on Common Voles.

Migration patterns
Once the summer breeding season is over the owls tend to leave upland areas and are found mostly in marshes and coastal grasslands. Bird ringing recoveries suggest that a proportion of the birds seen on the east coast in autumn originate from Scandinavia with some remaining for the winter.
Our British Short-eared Owls tend to migrate relatively short distances when compared to birds from Scandinavia and Central Europe. Nevertheless, ringed birds have been discovered from as far away as Russia, the Mediterranean and North Africa. The overall degree of connectivity between our breeding birds and those from elsewhere in Europe remains unclear. It would be an interesting area for further research.

Our analysis of ringing recoveries from across Europe suggests that the distances moved between breeding and wintering areas generally increased from the early 20th century through to the 1970s, then subsequently declined. These changes may reflect changes in breeding population densities, at least in some areas2 (their populations grew during the 20th century but have declined since the 1970s).

The Ministry of State Security (MfS) Remand Prison
In 1951, after the Ministry of State Security (MfS) was founded, it took over the Soviet cellar prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen as its central remand prison. In the 1950s, numerous people regarded as obstructive to the communist dictatorship were incarcerated here. The list of those arrested ranged from the leaders of the 17 June uprising in 1953 to Jehovah's Witnesses. But many others also spent months in the tomb-like cells, from reform communists such as Walter Janka, head of the Aufbau publishing house, to politicians fallen in disgrace, such as former GDR Foreign Minister Georg Dertinger, a CDU party member, and even one disgraced ex-SED Politbüro member, Paul Merker. Moreover, this period - long before the Berlin Wall - saw the Ministry of State Security (MfS) actually kidnapping critics of the SED Party who were in the West and bringing them to the Hohenschönhausen prison - the most famous case, perhaps, being Walter Linse, a West Berlin lawyer, kidnapped near his home in 1952 and executed a year later in Moscow.
At the end of the 1950s, the prisoners of the neighbouring labour camp "X" at the back of the site had to build a new prison building with over 200 cells and interrogation rooms. Until 1989, this U-shaped building served the Ministry of State Security (MfS) as their main remand prison. After the Berlin Wall went up on 13 August 1961, the prisoners here were primarily held after applying to leave the GDR or for attempting to escape. However, the prison continued to house SED Party critics, whether the dissident Rudolf Bahro, writer Jürgen Fuchs, or civil rights campaigner Bärbel Bohley. This building was designed to hold around 200 prisoners. The Ministry of State Security (MfS) had a further remand prison in its headquarters in Berlin's Lichtenberg district and one in each of the GDR's 15 local authority areas.
Over the years, physical violence, commonly used in the 1950s to wear down prisoners' resistance, gradually gave way to sophisticated psychological interrogation methods. Prisoners were never told where they were being held, and were systematically given the feeling of being totally at the mercy of an almighty state authority. The prisoners, hermetically sealed off from the outside world and usually kept in strict isolation from their fellow prisoners, were subjected to months of interrogation by trained experts - treatment solely aimed at extracting incriminating statements. Only after the non-violent revolution in autumn 1989 which ushered in the end of the SED Party dictatorship was the State Security Service dismantled and its prisons disbanded. On October 3, 1990, when the German Democratic Republic was incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany, the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen remand prison was finally closed.

In 1456 he defeated the Ottoman Turks at Nándorfehérvár (now it is Belgrade, Serbia); his fame on the first place is attributed to this victory which stopped Turks occupying Central Europe for a few decades; to his wife and sons on the second place, László (direct heir to him, a victim of a royal plot in 1457) and Mátyás, who eventually got the crown of Hungary in 1458, but his story is to come under #9.

the French Embassy in Senegal and the Egaé Group, with the support of UN Women WCARO, have launched the online platform "Les Expertes Sénégal", accessible at: expertessenegal.com. It will list the profiles of hundreds of women researchers,
businesswomen, professionals, journalists and leaders of associations in Senegal, ready to intervene in the media.
