For Macro Mondays' #drips, drops and splashes theme

It's been a while since I've been here, but this really tapped into something I've wanted to try for ages. (And luckily it corresponded with the family all going off on scout camp and leaving me to my own devices for a few days....)

The background is a colouring-in sheet I completed years ago; even back then I appear to have been quite keen on rainbows!

The image is just over 2inches across.

I'm pretty certain there is no requirement to have motion for this theme, but I'm conscious this is a little different from others in the pool. It's definitely drops, though, and definitely under 3inches across, so hoping it fits.

Red Deer - Cervus elaphus

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the largest deer species. The red deer inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. It also inhabits the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in northwestern Africa, being the only species of deer to inhabit Africa. Red deer have been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. In many parts of the world, the meat (venison) from red deer is used as a food source.

The red deer is the fourth-largest deer species behind moose, elk and sambar deer. It is a ruminant, eating its food in two stages and having an even number of toes on each hoof, like camels, goats and cattle. European red deer have a relatively long tail compared to their Asian and North American relatives. Subtle differences in appearance are noted between the various subspecies of red deer, primarily in size and antlers, with the smallest being the Corsican red deer found on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia and the largest being the Caspian red deer (or maral) of Asia Minor and the Caucasus Region to the west of the Caspian Sea. The deer of central and western Europe vary greatly in size, with some of the largest deer found in the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe.Western European red deer, historically, grew to large size given ample food supply (including people's crops), and descendants of introduced populations living in New Zealand and Argentina have grown quite large in both body and antler size. Large red deer stags, like the Caspian red deer or those of the Carpathian Mountains, may rival the wapiti in size. Female red deer are much smaller than their male counterparts.

The European red deer is found in southwestern Asia (Asia Minor and Caucasus regions), North Africa and Europe. The red deer is the largest non-domesticated land mammal still existing in Ireland. The Barbary stag (which resembles the western European red deer) is the only member of the deer family represented in Africa, with the population centred in the northwestern region of the continent in the Atlas Mountains. As of the mid-1990s, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria were the only African countries known to have red deer.

In the Netherlands, a large herd (ca. 3000 animals counted in late 2012) lives in the Oostvaarders Plassen, a nature reserve. Ireland has its own unique subspecies. In France the population is thriving, having multiplied fivefold in the last half-century, increasing from 30,000 in 1970 to approximately 160,000 in 2014. The deer has particularly expanded its footprint into forests at higher altitudes than before. In the UK, indigenous populations occur in Scotland, the Lake District, and the South West of England (principally on Exmoor). Not all of these are of entirely pure bloodlines, as some of these populations have been supplemented with deliberate releases of deer from parks, such as Warnham or Woburn Abbey, in an attempt to increase antler sizes and body weights. The University of Edinburgh found that, in Scotland, there has been extensive hybridisation with the closely related sika deer.

Several other populations have originated either with "carted" deer kept for stag hunts being left out at the end of the hunt, escapes from deer farms, or deliberate releases. Carted deer were kept by stag hunts with no wild red deer in the locality and were normally recaptured after the hunt and used again; although the hunts are called "stag hunts", the Norwich Staghounds only hunted hinds (female red deer), and in 1950, at least eight hinds (some of which may have been pregnant) were known to be at large near Kimberley and West Harling; they formed the basis of a new population based in Thetford Forest in Norfolk. Further substantial red deer herds originated from escapes or deliberate releases in the New Forest, the Peak District, Suffolk, Lancashire, Brecon Beacons, and North Yorkshire, as well as many other smaller populations scattered throughout England and Wales, and they are all generally increasing in numbers and range. A census of deer populations in 2007 and again in 2011 coordinated by the British Deer Society records the red deer as having continued to expand their range in England and Wales since 2000, with expansion most notable in the Midlands and East Anglia.

Cattle Egret

The Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) is a cosmopolitan species of heron (family Ardeidae) found in the tropics, subtropics, and warm-temperate zones. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Bubulcus, although some authorities regard two of its subspecies as full species, the western cattle egret and the eastern cattle egret. Despite the similarities in plumage to the egrets of the genus Egretta, it is more closely related to the herons of Ardea. Originally native to parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe, it has undergone a rapid expansion in its distribution and successfully colonized much of the rest of the world in the last century.

It is a white bird adorned with buff plumes in the breeding season. It nests in colonies, usually near bodies of water and often with other wading birds. The nest is a platform of sticks in trees or shrubs. Cattle egrets exploit drier and open habitats more than other heron species. Their feeding habitats include seasonally inundated grasslands, pastures, farmlands, wetlands, and rice paddies. They often accompany cattle or other large mammals, catching insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. Some populations are migratory, and others show post breeding dispersal.

The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain; However, the royal family does not live there, but rather in the Zarzuela Palace, which is why it is used for state ceremonies and solemn events.

With an area of 135,000 m² and 3,418 rooms (almost double that of Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Versailles, it is the largest royal palace in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world. It houses a valuable historical heritage- artistic, highlighting the set of musical instruments known as the Stradivarius Palatinos, and very relevant collections of other disciplines such as painting, sculpture and tapestry. The State rooms and artistic ,collections are open to visits as long as there are no official events.

The palace was built by order of King Philip V, on the site left by the Royal Alcázar, almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1734. Both the foundations of the old fortress and some of its structures were used for the construction of the new palace. The fire episode served to justify the replacement of the old building with a palace in accordance with the taste of the time. Its construction began in 1738, according to plans by the architect Filippo Juvara, who proposed a larger palace, but in a different location. When Juvara died, the project was entrusted to his disciple Juan Bautista Sachetti, who was required to adapt Juvara's plans to the site of the old Alcázar. Other distinguished Spanish architects such as Ventura Rodríguez participated and were trained in the quarry of the new palace; the configuration of the Royal Chapel is due to him. Francesco Sabatini was in charge of the completion of the building, as well as secondary renovation, expansion and decoration works. Charles III was the first monarch to continuously inhabit the palace.

Ten years ago panamanians approved the Panama Canal expansion in a referendum; now, after —110-million man hours, 292,000 tons of structural steel, 1.6 million tons of cement and 5 million cubic meters of concrete later —the project is finished.

The Panama Canal expansion project, also called the Third Set of Locks Project has doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal allowing the passage of post-Panamax-sized shipping vessels.

I took this picture last sunday when the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) was testing its newly finished second set of locks with transits by the Neopanamax dry bulk carrier MN Baroque owned by Switzerland’s shipping company SwissMarine.

Between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on June 26, China COSCO Shipping’s recently renamed 984-foot-long Panama will approach the new Agua Clara locks on the Atlantic side of the 50-mile long canal to begin the first official voyage through the expanded canal.

Here the Mezquita's Mihrab in all its splendor, indicating the qibla, or direction of prayer for the faithful. This is the crowning jewel of the expansion carried out by the great Caliph Al-Hakam II, during the height of Al-Andalus, the land of the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Eastern Roman Emperor, or Basileus, Nicephoros Phocas (Nicephorus II) sent Al-Hakam II fine mosaic glass of many colors, some covered with gold leaf, to decorate the new Mihrab of the expanded Great Mosque. A Greek master came to Cordoba to work for several years on the project, training the Caliph's artisans in his craft. In Arabic, this mosaic work was called fusaifisa.

The mihrab had been moved twice previously, as the Mezquita expanded to the south. Columns from the previous mihrab were re-used. Almanzor's later expansion to the east would put this jewel of the Ummayyad Caliphate out of center with the rest of the building, but to demolish it and build a new one was out of the question.

The inscirption in large letters reads: "(Allah) He is the knower of things hidden and manifest. He is the powerful one, he that is full of pity, the living one. There is no other god than him. Invoke him offering him a pure heart. Praised be Allah Lord of the Universe. Blessed be Iman Al-Mostainsir Bil-lah, favored by Allah, and the servant of Allah, Al-Hakam, Prince of Believers. Make him prosper, Allah, for the work of this sacred temple, which exceeds all other memorable constructions in its size, comfort and adornment. And the construction was concluded by his virtue and command. The blessing of Allah be upon Mohammed. And the peace. - The Iman Al-Mostansir Bil-lah, servant of Allah, Prince of Believers (May Allah favor him) commanded his freedman and Hachib Chafar-Ben-Baderraman (mercy on him Allah) carry out the construction of this temple and it was finished with the help of Allah under the supervision of Mohamed-Ben-Tamlih, Ahmed Ben Nasar, Jayd-ben-Haxim of the prefect's guard and of Motharrif."

Nearby, another inscirption reads: "In the name of Allah, the Merciful. Praise to Allah, who guided us to this place; we could not have been guided if it had not been by Allah! For this reason was sent the legate of our Lord with the truth. He commanded the Iman Al-Mostarsin Bil-lah, the servant of Allah, Al-Hakam, Prince of Believers (Allah protect him), his freedman and Hadrib Chafar Ben Abd-al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) to add to these, and this was built with the fear of Allah and with his aid. This was concluded in the moon of Dhu al-Hijjah of the year four and fifty and three hundred." (Hijri calendar: year 354, Justinian: 965 AD).

Red Fox

The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

I've photographed this rock formation once before and am very much in love with the photo from that time last year.

This past weekend, I photographed it again.

While both are with the same lens and camera, as well as the same film, both are quite different.

I mean, the photos are composed almost exactly the same, and even the light was similar. But things are different enough to make me want to shoot it again. Just to see.

I took several shots of it last weekend. This is my favorite of the bunch.

The formation has no official name, but I have been calling it Pillbox Rock as that is about its size.

Starting to look like Sandcut out here, what the hell over.

BNSF's North Bay, California to Willow Springs, Illinois Z-train wraps into the approach for Tunnel No.2, as it passes a more and more disappointing view from the north face of the Tunnel. Much like Sandcut from the Bena Road side this spot has been turning into a shithole the ballast pile, concrete ties, rails and the occasional wrecked railcar are one thing; but the bombed out Hyundai and literal pile of garbage are another thing almost makes this area feel like LA County...
