In this activity, visitors explore the history of asteroid impacts on earth and chart their frequency and damage caused.
Ideum collaborated with Lowell Observatory on an exhibition all about asteroid science. The entire exhibition is a fictional school, Space Guard Academy, where cadets learn all about asteroids and "rank up" as they participate in different interactive learning modules.
Ideum developed 5 connected interactives, as well as a student registration station, a system to track student scores and ranks, and a "hall of fame" displaying the pictures of recent graduates. To learn more about Ideum's Creative Services, visit our website.
January 1941 was the start of another bleak winter in wartime Britain and the issue of Art & Industry magazine, in its new small wartime format, was looking at food, availablity, packaging and advertising. It certainly was a year of rationing and belt-tightening for many but it is often noted that in wartime Britain, the system of rationing and food provision meant no one went hungry and indeed, the general diet of the population was amongst the healthiest it has ever been.
Behind much of this effort was the work of the Ministry of Food. It had been set up in 1939 with a remit to oversee the system of rationing. It also put a lot of effort into advertising and publicity - general tips, information and advice on how to make best use of available foodstuffs along with advice as to how to cook, prepare and preserve such foods. the latter was often aimed at those, now lacking domestic help, who had seldom had to prepare or cook food.
This article looks at the first campaigns of the Ministry from 1939 and into 1940 and it covers much of the MoF's output with examples of press adverts, publicity leaflets and posters. The author is Grace Lovat Fraser, 1899 - 1977 (nee Grace Inez Crawford) a fascinating figure who had married artist Cluad Lovat Fraser in 1917. She had trained as a dancer and singer and had become involved in theatre design before becoming more involved in wider design and graphic interests. As well as being editor of this journal she worked for some notable design departments including the furniture manufacturers Venestra and drinks company Schweppes.

Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer (Catalan pronunciation: [iɫdəˈfons sərˈða]) (Centelles, December 23, 1815 - Caldas de Besaya, August 21, 1876) was the progressive Catalan Spanish urban planner who designed the 19th-century "extension" of Barcelona called the Eixample.
Bio
Born at Centelles, Catalonia, he originally trained as a civil engineer (Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, in Spanish). When the government of the time finally gave in to public pressure and allowed Barcelona's city walls to be torn down, he realized the need to plan the city's expansion so that the new extension would become an efficient and livable place, unlike the congested, epidemic-prone old town within the walls. When he failed to find suitable reference works, he undertook the task of writing one from scratch while designing what he called the 'Eixample', borrowing a few technological ideas from his contemporaries to create a unique, thoroughly modern integrated concept that was carefully considered rather than whimsically designed.
He continued to create projects and improve existing designs throughout his lifetime, as well as to develop his theories taking on larger planning scopes (at regional planning level), until the very end. In the process, he lost all his family's inheritance and he died a heavily indebted near-pauper, never having been paid for his chief masterpiece, the design of the Barcelona 'Eixample'.
Achievements[edit]
He was a multi-faceted man who, in pursuit of his vision, gave up a steady job in the civil engineering service; stood for election and became a member of the Cortes (parliament); drafted useful ground-breaking legislation; drew up an incredibly detailed topographical survey map of Barcelona's surrounding area; and wrote a theoretical treatise to support each of his major planning projects. He actually coined a number of important words in Spanish, including 'urbanización'.
Achievements
He focused on key needs: chiefly, the need for sunlight, natural lighting and ventilation in homes (he was heavily influenced by the sanitarian movement), the need for greenery in people's surroundings, the need for effective waste disposal including good sewerage, and the need for seamless movement of people, goods, energy, and information.
His designs belie a network-oriented approach far ahead of his time. His street layout and grid plan were optimized to accommodate pedestrians, carriages, horse-drawn trams, urban railway lines (as yet unheard-of), gas supply and large-capacity sewers to prevent frequent floods, without neglecting public and private gardens and other key amenities. The latest technical innovations were incorporated in his designs if they could further the cause of better integration, but he also came up with remarkable new concepts of his own, including a logical system of land readjustment that was essential to the success of his project, and produced a thorough statistical analysis of working-class conditions at the time, which he undertook in order to demonstrate the ills of congestion.
Controversy[edit]
His plan for Barcelona underwent two major revisions; the second version, approved by the Spanish government at the time, is the one still recognizable in the layout of today's 'Eixample', though the low height of buildings and the gardens within every single city block were soon dispensed with by politicians inclined to cave in to (or perhaps even indulge in) speculation. Only one of the two planned diagonal streets was realized. The Eixample was and still is inhabited by the well-to-do, instead of integrating classes. Many of the Catalan architects of his time opposed Cerdà's ideas, even accusing him of promoting socialism. In the end, though, they designed the Modernist façades that brought fame to the district.
Political developments in Spain and Catalonia eventually led to the enshrinement of a revisionist version of how Cerdà secured official approval of his plan.
Cerdà actually drew up his plan under the commission of the then competent authority, the Spanish central government, with the support of the city council. A political reversal led to a change in local government, and the new council sought to pre-empt the previous central government's decision by holding a project competition in 1859, which Cerdà lost; nevertheless, Cerdà's design prevailed, much to the chagrin of the major property owners

Teoría del Enlace del Movimiento de las Vías Marítimas y Terrestres ("Theory of the Linkage of movement on Landways and Seaways", 1863), to accompany a Preliminary Project for a road-rail-sea intermodal system at the port of Barcelona, evidence of which is conclusive though most of the content has not yet been found.

La mostra, pensata come un racconto sull’Exhibition Design, rappresenta un’occasione per celebrare il Master IDEA in Exhibition Design - Architettura dell’esporre che IDEA, l'Associazione Italiana Exhibition Designers, organizza da oltre dieci anni in collaborazione con POLI.design.
Un tributo a progettisti contemporanei (la maggior parte dei quali soci IDEA) che hanno influenzato i recenti sviluppi dei temi allestitivi e alle nuove generazioni di designer che costituiscono l’impegno formativo dell’Associazione.
Sui tavoli sono esposti i lavori dei progettisti/docenti del Master IDEA. Alle pareti, invece, 24 pannelli mostrano i progetti più validi tra quelli elaborati dai più di 100 allievi che il Master ha preparato nel corso del tempo.
La mostra è organizzata da IDEA, Associazione Italiana Exhibition Designers con la Triennale di Milano, in collaborazione con Asal Assoallestimenti e Allestimenti Benfenati.
