But to be honest, after all the excitement of the day before, this was as much action as we needed.

As Christmas Day draws closer, it's very exciting to look at the wrapped gifts and to wonder what's inside each one. In fact, the excitement can sometimes become so intense that you can actually see it swirling around the gifts... 😄

Speaking of gifts, I wish the gift of a warm and festive holiday season to all of my Flickr friends, and a very Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. Thanks for your comments and support throughout the year; it is very much appreciated!

For any who might be interested in how this image was made, by the way, I've added a brief description in the first comment box.

This blue jay could barely contain its excitement as it celebrated spring's official arrival today! Happy Spring!

It is always wonderful to see these beautiful owls. The excitement is the same as the very first time I saw one.

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

I had one of the most exciting butterfly experiences so far yesterday!

Having travelled a little way to a local woods to find the elusive pearl bordered fritillary, I got well and truly lost thanks to my atrocious map reading skills and tramped miles...eventually finding myself on some sort of motor rally track 😨

Heading back uphill, the map finally began to make sense (!) and after nearing my target area I saw the welcome sight of a fellow enthusiast, camera around neck, scanning the ground - thank you Jon!

The area of scrubland the butterflies love is very sensitive as there are caterpillars in the leaf litter and of course food sources need protecting too, so we waited for a long time for one of these beauties to land close enough to the path to photograph well.

Eventually this stunning butterfly chose to rest on the gorse, with its perfect complementary colours. Even better, a large cloud came over just at that moment so it decided to stay put and pose beautifully for a while. What luck!

Apologies for the long write up...but I'm still buzzing with excitement!

Just for fun... two Brown-violetears fighting for the perch, one of them out of focus :)

I am trying to contain my excitement, I know a lot can happen but right now Lady B. has 5 eggs in the nest. She comes out to get a drink and an occasional snack. Mr. B. is taking most of her meals to her while she sits on her nest.

The language of excitement is at best picturesque merely. You must be calm before you can utter oracles.

Henry David Thoreau.

Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Halloween excites me like no other holiday. It's one of those primordial feelings, deeply rooted in childhood memories. The utter excitement of celebrating fear and darkness. Of dark thoughts being brought out into the open, if just for one night. Now many years past my youth and the sheer joy of costume-wearing and trick-or-treating, I'm still caught up in these feelings. I watched in fascination yesterday afternoon as kids in costumes prowled the streets. Some quite imaginative, other less so. But all infused with that playful energy that I recall so vividly. Kids seem to have transitioned away from horrific monster sort of costumes of my day. But that's really doesn't matter; the festive, celebratory aspect remains intact. Laughter and bright colors filled the ever lengthening shadows, both of the landscape as well as my mind. Time has a way of dampening the mind, blotting out memories. But Halloween in this case brought them flowing back. Adults seem to rekindle their own memories watching children retrace their steps in life. As a kid the most terrifying thoughts were centered on scenes such as this creepy pumpkin head-scarecrow hybrid. I loved (and still do) the thought of something like this standing silent vigil out in some desolate location. Nothing abjectly terrifying about this puppet-like creation, yet the context of presentation is darkly disturbing. It's as if this tattered and grimy thing has been waiting for me all these years since childhood. In fact I'm certain it waits for me still.

It’s been all excitement on the photography front with the aurora being seen as far south as Cornwall the last two night. Did you get out? I saw the red alarm and was half prepared to go out to the coast, but looking out the window it was too cloudy. I kept stopping my catch up viewing of Endeavour and looking but it didn’t seem worth it. I caught a good showing from our coast last year but to be honest unless I’m going to some interesting dark sky location I don’t see the point of another local point and shoot snap. That said the fact I was up and down looking out the window I’ll probably do exactly that some night in the future. Anyway he’s a stupidly early photo from last June up at Steetley pier.

A Pileated Woodpecker is excited to see what was revealed

Had a hard time containing my excitement yesterday with all the amazing views!

K861-05 came from the CP in Chicago, and amazingly, the power stayed on the train thru Corbin. Here it is passing thru downtown Starke, FL on April 9, 2016. They had a "Strawberry Festival" going on, and I almost watched a blue grass band get hit by this train.

An Eastern Phoebe gets a little excited at the prospect of a moth breakfast.

... of the best kind! As a diver, a shark encounter is among the most exciting and thrilling. Their seemingly effortless glide through the water is mesmerizing. But most surprising may be their curiosity. Their eyes are expressionless, suggesting that they are mere machines. Nevertheless, they certainly conveyed a sense in their close passes that they were wondering what we were doing in their domain. We weren't stirring up fish for them to eat and they lingered well past the point of realizing that we were not food. (Nor were we chumming.) So maybe we were just a distraction from their mundane activities. Don't we all need that!

This is a caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi), estimated to be about 1.5m, so probably a young one. (Mature ones are 2-2.5m.) They are listed as near-threatened by IUCN. Why anyone would intentionally harvest sharks from the ocean is beyond me.

The earlier image I posted from the dive provided a better sense of the reef terrain. This shot, looking slightly up, includes the wave patterns from the surface (we are in about 8m of water).

A Purple Gallinule gets a little revved up

In a small part of the wood, a red-berried tree was reason for a day of excitement for several species of birds - here: the red-eyed vireo, a bird with a descriptive name that sings a part of it - at least this is how I remember the song: vire-ee vire-oh.

Stock car racing Midwestern style. Usually done on an unpaved oval track of a half mile or less, this popular weekend diversion really draws a crowd on Saturday night. High powered cars that are basically just a body shell covering a motor and chassis go round and round jockeying for position by bumping, pushing, and drafting each other. The extremely loud roar of the engines adds to the excitement. Definitely a survival of the fittest proposition.

Not much bigger than the leaves of the tree she calls home, this female Shining Flycatcher was darting back and forth with nesting material, preparing to raise the next generation. I managed to capture a shot of her singing on the near-complete nest as we quietly passed by on the boat, gliding along the famous Daintree River in tropical Australia. Taken in FNQ, Australia

At last, tired and happy, we went back to our room. Outside, the city thronged with life. But once past the gate, everything was quiet. It felt almost as if we had passed into another realm.

High Excitement in our household as over 30 years of living here we never had a woodpecker in the garden before, but a father and his chick have taken a liking to our nuts and here is a photo of the proud looking Juvenile taking a look around :-)

I've been after a shot like this all summer. My first attempt at beards tongue failed miserably as, in my haste and excitement, I used the wrong soil and fertilizer. Discarding those dying plants, I let my dear wife pick out a more suitable plant, and behold - blooms that are lasting! The next step was sitting on the deck and waiting as Auto Capture does not work with blossoms moving in the wind. This little one made the rounds and luckily I was able to catch her in just the right position. Now....... I want more!

Have a great and restful weekend!
