#StudyAbroadBecause you will obtain a confidence that you never knew you had. I accomplished so many things in Costa Rica that I never thought I could do. I jumped off a cliff (twice - waterfall & Tarzan jump), I kayaked in the Pacific Ocean, I tried incredible foods, I bargained in the coolest markets, I geeked out at SO many museums, I got lost in the magic of the country (also, I really got lost while exploring😂) & most importantly I learned about the amazing culture and I made a new family abroad 💕 I would like to send a special thank you to @gilmanscholarship because without them none of this would have happened. I'm just a few days from graduation & I'm ready to take on the rest of the world. #CitizenDiplomacy #GilmanScholar @exchangeourworld

#studyabroadbecause you learn more about yourself, get to understand the world more, and witness humanity (or lack thereof). Getting to visit the Western Wall on Good Friday (or Purim depending on your religion) was one of the most memorable experiences abroad. It was one of the most gut wrenching and visceral trips because I got to see the conflict first hand and see the privileges I receive because of my US citizenship. Jerusalem is the Holy Land for many and I, a spiritual person raised Buddhist, got to visit just because I wanted to. Some people live their entire lives and will never have the opportunity or ability to go. It is that lesson and so many others that are the reason to go abroad. I learned how to communicate and connect with people without a mutual language. I learned the value and importance of water. More importantly learned what it is like to live without water. I also learned that I might be as American as can be, but my skin color tells a different story. Those reasons are just on the top of the list... Without the #gilmanscholarship, I would not have been able to spend the semester abroad and honestly just become a better person. #gilmanalumni #exchangeourworld #generationstudyabroad

My journalism students crowd around me back stage before they perform hip-hop at the annual teacher-homage ceremony at the National Management College in Yangon, Burma. #StudyAbroadBecause (or #TeachAbroadBecause) you can make a real difference in your students' lives! As one of these Burmese students wrote me at the end of my Fulbright Scholar posting in Yangon: "You are my best teacher. I love you so much, and I will never forget you throughout all of my life." #CitizenDiplomacy @ExchangeOurWorld
#studyabroadbecause making friends abroad will teach you more about other countries, languages, and cultures than you'll ever learn from a textbook.
When I was in Oman, a group of local college students were tutors for my Arabic class, and we quickly became friends. While we all learned from our cultural differences, we also realized we had much more in common than we do different. They dyed our hands with henna, taught us how to bargain in souqs, and showed us how to eat with our hands. But we also went ice skating, ate popcorn at the movies, and took lots and lots of photos together. #NSLIY #CitizenDiplomacy #IEW2016 @exchangeourworld @nsliy

#studyabroadbecause understanding other cultures fosters tolerance and compassion not just in you but those around you that need it.
When I told people I was traveling to Oman, a country in the Middle East, I heard a lot of prejudicial comments about a country they knew nothing about and most didn't even know existed. Every single comment was proven wrong over and over again while I was in Oman where I was warmly welcomed by its hospitable and kind people. Not only did my own perspective on the Middle East change because of studying abroad, but by sharing my experiences, I helped expand the views of my close-minded friends.
